THE UNCANNY X MEN ( 1985)
Director : John Badham
Music : Brad Fidel
Project History
In the fall of 1983, the 20th anniversary of the debut of The Uncanny X Men, Orion Pictures feels that it's the perfect sci fi , Superhero property to bring to the big screen.
Unlike Superman, Hulk, and Spiderman, The X Men remain largely unknown to the general public in the early 1980s.
With it's themes of prejudice, alienation , and teen anxiety, Producers feel that all the elements are in place to capture the teen and 20 something audience with a slick, lower budget, adaptation.
Director John Badham of Saturday Night Fever and War Games is tasked to bring The X Men to the big screen for a Summer 1985 release date .
Script
In order to keep the film under budget , Producers decide two focus on 5 team members whose powers could be replicated with the limits of 1980s visual effects .
They decide to comprise the team of Cyclops, Storm , Jean Grey, Wolverine, and Shadowcat , who is the lead character of the film, and our guide into the world of Mutants.
Professor X of course would be the groups leader , with Magneto serving as film's the sole Mutant villain, on a quest to recruit more mutants to create The Brotherhood .
The film ends with the X Men battling, and barely defeating, Magneto , leaving the door open for sequels.
Casting
The Cast for the film is made up of character actors as opposed to Marquee names.
Fred Ward ( The Right Stuff) , being one of the more well known cast members is the first to be cast as the team loner and maverick Wolverine.
Michael Pare ( Streets Of Fire) and Laurie Singer ( Footloose) are cast as the iconic Marvel couple , Cyclops and Jean Grey.
Singer and Actress Grace Jones( A View To A Kill) is cast as Storm, while A Nightmare On Elm Street actress Heather Langenkamp , is chosen as the film's lead Shadowcat.
The parts of the diametrically opposed one time friends Professor X and Magneto go to British actor Charles Dance and Netherlands actor Rutger Hauer
