GungHo Online Entertainment announced Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition for 3DS during its New Games Presentation in Japan today.
Mario series creator Shigeru Miyamoto took to the stage to discuss how he took notice of the Puzzle & Dragons series after seeing a number of Nintendo employees playing it, and was struck by the work ethic of the people at GungHo.
Discussions led to a 3DS game, Puzzle & Dragons Z, in December 2013, but Nintendo wanted to do more. They decided making Mario a guest character wouldn’t be enough for the audience of that franchise, which led to today’s announcement.
The puzzle RPG begins in the Mushroom Kingdom, where Bowser has harvested the power of a mysterious “Drop” that suddenly appeared. With Princess Peach kidnapped once again, it’s up to Mario to save her. To do this, Mario will do battle in the style of Puzzle & Dragons puzzle battles, befriending other Mario series characters on the way.
The game will support both StreetPass and local multiplayer functionality.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition is due out for 3DS in Japan on April 29 for 4,000 yen via retail or download.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition Shows How To Power Up Characters. April 7, 2015 . 3:31pm

New gameplay footage shows how players can power up their party.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition
has best of both worlds from GungHo Online Entertainment and Nintendo, with a bunch of characters from Mushroom Kingdom in P&D style. The latest video shows more of the game, including a look at how to power up your party.
[YT]QZrLa5vgblE[/YT]

The video starts with a look at the game’s story, and once again, Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser, so Mario and friends will need to save her. Except this time, they’ll do so in Puzzle & Dragons style.

For those of you familiar with the original Puzzle & Dragons, the gameplay is pretty much the same; however, you won’t be timed while moving the Drops, so you can take your time and strategize or build your combos accordingly.

At 0:50, they show how you’ll be able to make your parties. Similar to the original game, characters have Leader Skills that you’ll want to match for the stages you take on. Enemies can join your party upon defeat as well. You can check out our earlier report for more details on some of the characters and their skills.

In addition to the leader, you’ll also select an Assist Character for your party. These guys also come with their own set of skills that you’ll want to mix with your Leader Skills. You can get Assist Characters via StreetPass or as registered friends in the game.

At 1:58, we see the variety of the worlds that are in the game, and they’re full of familiar scenery and characters from the Super Mario Bros. titles. Toad’s house is used to power up characters, and they can also be evolved by using special items.

Items can also be used to level up skills, which lowers the required number of turns until they can be used. There’s also a way to awaken skills for certain characters. At 3:30, they show a look at the Score Attack mode, where you’ll get to test your skills and compete in the rankings with friends.

Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition will release in Japan on April 29 and in North America on May 22, 2015 for Nintendo 3DS.
