Smallville Smallville's influence in the comics, other DC media

Is it just me or does the Superman from Superman Earth One look a lot like Tom Welling?

I love how Shane Davis draws him, but I don't find resemblance to Welling.

has Welling0like features, the hair, face structure, although I wouldnt say it looks "just" like him.

No Davis has always drawn his Superman to resemble Routh. A good source of that is Superman/Batman "The Search for Kryptonite". And other drawings he has done of him.

After seeing the latest excellent Man of Steel trailer, and reading some of the plot synopsis, it seems that this version of Supes is also a bit of a "late bloomer" and struggles into adulthood coming to grips with who and what he is.

Remember Smallville getting flack for this approach a decade ago?

Looks like the show influenced way more than just the de-aging of the Kents.

People just need to accept Smallville is awesome and important!

Amy Adams our newest Lois Lane actress is a former Smallville guest star from Season 1 of the series Jodi Melville from episode 7 "Craving".

Rumor has it that another Smallville guest star has been cast in the role of Lex Luthor in Man of Steel, Mackenzie Gray who previous played an accelerated clone of Luthor in Season 10 Premiere "Lazarus".

So Superman in MoS says the following:

"You're a monster Zod, and I'm gonna stop you."

Now my mind could be playing tricks on me, but didn't Clark say the exact same thing?

I could probably make a list of all the similarities or near identical things between the show and the movie, and not because both franchises are about Clark/Superman.

I guess Dr. Emil Hamilton from Smallville is also in the new Man of Steel. As excited as I am for this movie, I still really miss Smallville. :csad:

Same here. From the day MoS was announced, I was determined to hate it because of how much I loved SV and Welling. But the more I see from it, the more excited I get. I hope to enjoy it much more than I did when they rebooted Spider-Man, since I was just as big of a fan of those movies.

And as good as Cavill looks in the role, Welling will always be my ideal vision of Superman.

I agree. I think Cavill will knock it out of the park, but in my mind, Welling will always be the definitive Superman for me. I really wish we could've seen him play Superman on the big screen. I guess it just wasnt meant to be. Im just glad I got my Season 1-10 DVDs.. lol

The downside to Cavill is his height, another 2 inches would do. And his chest hair coming out of the suit.

His facial and physical features share a lot in common with Tom's.

The chest hair didn't really bother me. I'm getting a little tired of seeing Superman being drawn like a 20 something metrosexual especially in the New 52. I can agree about Cavill's height though.

umm, you do know Dr. Hamilton's character long predates the dude from Smallville right?

Apart from the addition of a version of Lionel Luthor to Lex's back story (and to be fair that Lionel was less than a bit player, he was just a footnote in Lex's past), and some minor cosmetic changes, I really haven't seen any major influence that Smallville had on the DCU since before the New 52 through to today. The comics version of Chloe Sullivan was hyped up as Jimmy's "girlfriend" and then she disappeared as quickly as she appeared, and after that... nothing. There was very little that Smallville did, that hadn't already been done elsewhere, probably a bit better. So no, Smallville's influence, beyond keeping the characters in the public eye, wasn't that significant

I'm pretty sure he/she means the actor who played Emil, Alessandro Juliani, who's playing a Sargent in Man of Steel among a couple of other Smallville actors making appearances in the movie.

What other actors from Smallville are appearing in MoS, apart from Juliani and Adams?

This is so ironic.

All the reasons Smallville was hated for, well, most of them are in Man of Steel, some of them taken to the extreme.

:hehe:

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Yeah, I have a friend who, for some reason, keeps saying I'm not going to enjoy MoS, mostly because my biggest love for anything Superman related comes from Smallville. Yet there's a lot of things I've seen in the trailers and TV spots that make me say "Hey, they did that in Smallville too!"

The funny thing is that he's never really watched Smallville, so I don't know why he keeps saying I'm not going to like it. And as long as it doesn't try to mimic Superman (1978) like SR did, then its even better.

For all the hate some gave to Smallville and yet I see touches of Smallville In Man of steel.
At least Smallville could bring themselves to pay homage to Donnor Superman.

I saw Man of Steel earlier this afternoon by myself, and then again a few hours ago with some friends, and here are some of the similarities and possible references to Smallville that I noticed. SPOILERS!

  • When Clark is pulled out of his car and harassed by some boys, you can see a sign in the background of the auto shop that says "Sullivan's," which could be a reference to Chloe's family.
  • In the same scene, some of the boys are wearing a similar styled Smallville High letterman jacket like the Smallville crows had.
  • Pete's mother mentions a "Fordman" kid, which could refer to Whitney.
  • Lois meets Clark before he becomes Superman, and even after this, she tries to protect his true identity.
  • Clark does not know how to fly and does not attempt to until he wears the costume. He also cannot get the hang of flying right away.
  • Jonathan dies in an attempt to prevent Clark from revealing his secret.
  • Clark does not wear glasses at all as a child. He does not start until he joins the Daily Planet.
  • The younger versions of Clark bare a strong similarity to how Tom Welling looked as a young Clark Kent.
  • Jonathan reveals the truth to Clark about his true heritage.
I'm sure there's more that my lack of sleep won't allow me to remember right now. And I know some of these things were done in the comics first, but its just interesting to see how much they incorporated from the show, especially things that people seemed so outraged bout and unwilling to accept in the past.
