The Costume

That's an early concept for Hal's Injustice design. Really cool.

I don't mind his look in the game. Looked weird at first but eventually grew on me.

In the comics, i never understood why the ring can produce a solid costume that looks like it is made of some sort textile or cloth, but every other construct it makes is a mere green hologram looking thing.

the way the movie did it made a lot more sense, and is consistent in how the ring is suppose to work, so a CGI costume makes more sense, it just wasn't executed well.

I tend to agree with you on this. The CGI and physical look could've been adjusted especially around the mask, but I think it was the right way to go.

There have been a lot of improvements to the tech. and I think they could get it right this time around.

No way the black should be a real physical suit and the green should be light constructs.

^^ Exactly right, the suit should be real and only the constructs/energy should be CGI.

While this is a nice idea on its own:

There are two reasons why I wouldn't go for this approach of black physical suit with green parts being created by the ring: first, while it might look nice here, it would be too hard on the eyes watching this on actual actors through the entire film. And second, I'd change the way the constructs look entirely.

Regarding the suit - I think we can all agree that considering how GL uniform usually looks, there is no way that it could be made out of that same green energy, so if willing to give him an actual black undersuit, why not go all for it, ditch the idea of ring supplying him with it and make the entire suit physical. A proper space uniform. Preferably, something like this:

With "domino mask" being visors meant to protect their eyes when they're too close to the sun, akin to this:

Regarding the constructs - this might sound blasphemous to most GL fans, but constructs in live-action look silly as hell. I remember some people expressing their desire to abandon the idea of constructs completely, but even though I always found it to be too out there, I kinda liked that idea of controlling and shaping this energy through the power of will. And there is no reason for them to be ditched at all, I'd simply not have them appear as if they're being made out of a green glass. Not just that it makes those constructs look cartoonish, but also doesn't make sense for an energy-based weapon the ring is supposed to be to create a firm, glass-like object like that.

So, I think it is much more fitting to go for green plasma:

And make constructs gradually take shape out of this plasma mass, similarly to patronus from "Harry Potter" franchise:

giphy.gif

Same aesthetic would work for protective aura around Lanterns or defensive shields:

expecto-patronum.gif

And it would make it more interesting to be able to watch as those constructs take form from the energy of the ring or even wither as GL struggles to concentrate.

Also, considering that "Harry Potter" franchise belongs to WB anyway, it's not like they're stealing the idea, the worst they can be accused of is self-plagiarism and no one actually cares about that. "Black Sabbath" did so with their latest album and everyone agrees it is the best album they released in last forty years, author of this post included. :oldrazz:

They did that in Green Lantern and it looked terrible.

They did that in Green Lantern and it looked terrible.

Did they? I seem to remember green glass-like constructs. And CGI was generally terrible in that film.

But if they can't make that work, then to hell with it, ditch the constructs altogether. I can't see any other solution.

Yep they formed like plasma and were a little fuzzy because of it, and there is no reason for constructs to be ditched, as it is very easy to explain that Oan Superscience can mess with the basic properties or light to make it hard, what is vital is to make it not see through and give it the proper glow.

Though, when you say not to make it see through and give it a proper glow... do you have a visual reference of a kind when it comes to how you'd have the constructs appear?

I have said this many times already. It is genius if they make a black suit a lot like Superman suit. Just like how they used CGI to make the cape work, they could tone down the neon look and still bring the green in with CGI. Although I completely agree with your replacing the domino mask with visors. They have to make the suit more Sci-fi and not a cgi campy superhero suit. But they can make it look good if they blend the practical suit and add some cgi. Also your plasma idea or Harry Potter wand magic thing is cool, that would work way better than the stuff that was in the previous GL movie.

This is awesome man... throw some white on the gloves and is really great...
I don't agree about changing the symbols place on the center of his chest tho.

I don't either care too much about the symbol but is just suggestion. Well since Superman has an alien kryptonian suit, it makes more sense that both kind of look similar.

Not really just the general idea to make it appear solid, for the glow though I've noticed that in most media when using his glowing green light constructs or even having his aura active the green doesn't seem to be effecting much in the way of lighting around him something that I would hope would be corrected.

As far as that scene goes it is really only silly because the constructs they are using are oversized and the fact that they are just floating there doing nothing and letting the other throw s*** at them, if they were flying around in dynamic combat it would look better.

So you're telling me, that animated characters attacking each other with giant glowing baseball bats and chain saws seems cartoonish? absurd :whatever:

Basically, you hate the one thing that makes Green Lantern, who he is? Awesome. What are you doing on the GL board again?

It is silly to me, as they are still glass-like glowing constructs. Sure it is enhanced by the choreography and the fact that constructs are oversized, but GL film did make them a bit less solid and glassy and it didn't look any better.

It is definitely a tough thing to pull them in live-action well.

So, confronted with the option to read my last few posts as part of bigger discussion and understand the context in which I posted that game video or take the game video at face value, ignorant of everything that was said and established in prior posts, you opted to do the latter? Yeah, I reckon I'm not going to waste my time with you.

I will answer to your question though - I am posting and discussing.

By the way, your sarcasm is ridiculously overemphasized. I'd work on that.

I did read the entire thread, actually. I chose to respond in an over emphasized sarcastic way because:

1) You literally said "ditch the constructs all together" which is the only thing that makes green lantern who he is. Otherwise, what? he's got a flight ring? It's absurd. The ONLY option is to find a way to make it look good. If you're not going to have constructs, you might as well not have green lantern.

2) You posted about how it looks cartoony showing animated characters, not live action people. Of course a cartoon is going to look cartoony. Between the terrible movie, and fan made videos/trailers, there's plenty of examples of people trying to make green lantern's powers look good.

Getting serious and not snarky,
I actually liked the way the constructs looked in the GL movie. That film had it's share of problems, but it wasn't the constructs. 78% of it was the writing.

The suit is made of energy.

I've often wondered about this.

Lanterns tend to keep their uniforms even when their power rings are out of juice, or not on their fingers anymore. How does that work?

Regarding the constructs, I am aware that it is basically what makes Green Lantern a Green Lantern, still, I remember some people proposing the idea for ring to still have its defensive and offensive properties, just without making specific constructs, but rather discharging energy. I know it would be a huge departure (and if you've read my initial post on the matter, you'll notice I've said that I like the idea of controlling and shaping this power through sheer will and concentration), but I am willing to amuse this idea, nevertheless. When it comes to adapting comic books in live action I never was a zealous purist, acknowledging the fact that in a different medium some changes have to be made.

But, again, I'm aware this is a big departure from how GLs are established in the comics and I am well aware that not being much of a GL fan, I wouldn't be as attached to certain aspects as most people here probably would.

Now when it comes to the video I posted, I was faced with a limited choice - either a video that shows constructs from "Injustice" game or a video that shows constructs from "Green Lantern" film. Knowing that "Green Lantern" film's CGI is widely hated, I predicted a response being "CGI was crap in that film, that's why it looks cartoonish" and opted for a video game, failing to predict the response "it looks cartoonish, because it is a video game", as I hoped I made it clear that I was referring solely to the aesthetic of constructs, which is pretty much the same in both.

So, I said that you didn't pay attention to the context, because I was referring to the green, glassy and solid nature of constructs and medium itself was irrelevant as in both, game and film, constructs are depicted as they are depicted in the comics and could more likely than not end up being depicted in the coming "Green Lantern Corps" film - which I maintain looks silly and cartoonish in live action. Matter of fact, in "Injustice" game I don't find them to look that silly, because it is a game, but on film they do appear that way.

As for the GL movie, I personally didn't like the CGI. Regardless, I still believe that making it clear ring is an energy based weapon by going for an aesthetic that is reminiscent of green plasma is how it should be done, I just think it should be executed better than it was in that film and that aesthetic of solid objects should be completely changed for something more plasma-like, similarly to that patronus above.

I agree with you in regards to the plasma like effect. I do think it makes the most sense. I think there is a balance between the wispy "magical spell" building over time of the harry potter examples above and a more powerful almost lightsabery construction.

I actually really like the characterization Geoff Johns gave to each ring in (the original not current) Green Lantern Rebirth. More specifically how Guy Gardner's ring "sparks with energy" I could see that kinda how they did kylo's saber in Force Awakens.

I think you were really damned if you did, damned if you didn't when choosing a video example for the examples of cartoonish. You've either got the live action movie, which people say the CG sucked, or something fan made, which people would just be like "yeah, but that's bad because it's fan made" or what you chose, which was not an example of the powers in the real world.

I was a little harsh on the saltiness, though, so I'm sorry for that.

Inconsistent writing.

Yeah, I am not saying patronus approach would be perfect, it is a bit too misty for my liking as well... some middle ground between that and an effect of the lightsaber seems like the best option indeed.

That's interesting... didn't know about this.

Well, that was pretty much my thinking, though to be honest, I actually haven't consider anything fan-made. It didn't cross my mind.

I didn't take it to heart, don't worry about it.

Yes dude I know the suit is made of energy, but it can still be a real practical suit with cgi on top to give it an aura/glow
