Illumination's Super Mario movie

My beef wasn't the songs themselves but it was when I found out that the songs replaced the original score that was way better. Like when they first get to the Jungle Kingdom the original music for the scene was this beautiful tribute to Donkey Kong Country:

Instead they randomly replaced it with Take On Me for some reason. They leaned a little too heavy with the songs.

Okay now I see why you have beef, because that totally would've elevated that whole scene and set the tone for the Jungle Kingdom. Because man, when Mario and Luigi got the Super Star and they played the theme from the game I got hyped.

That's the whole thing. I don't mind a needle drop in a movie even if it's a song that's been done to death like "I Need A Hero" but not when it comes at the expense of ditching a great original piece of music.

as much as I love classic Rock and 80's music, that piece not being in the movie is egregious.

yeah I saw clips of the scenes that had the scores put back in and they work so much better without the songs.

I hated the downright moronic needle drops, but knowing those scenes were already scored and the music is this good, that just makes it sad.

Finally saw this and had an absolute blast. I’m kinda scratching my head over the mixed critical reaction to this film; compared to most video game-based movies like Mortal Kombat (2021), this movie is Citizen freakin’ Kane. Very faithful to the games, good voice acting all around (even Pratt, who sounds like a young Danny Devito and it really works) and really cool visuals. I was a little high when I watched it and I think I need to do a rewatch when I’m completely stoned because I’m sure it will be been more amazing lol. Bring on Super Mario 2 and Yoshi.

Sounds like you answered your own question lol

Seems a bit odd to me to re-release it in such crowded period, squeezed in between Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4
Illumination wants to cannibalize their ticket sales to another movie?

It makes no sense. Families going out to a movie are obviously going to choose Inside Out 2 or Despicable Me 4 over a movie that they not only likely already saw last year but that's also readily available to watch at home.

I would understand the reasoning behind it more were we still in deep pandemic times and everything was delayed but this doesn't even make sense from a "Universal has less coming out this year because of the strike" standpoint because it's not even a week before Despicable Me 4.

Oh that’s good news. Looking forward to more. Can’t wait for some casting announcements

I actually enjoyed this, more than I expected to. Even though its completely different from the games, the 1993 film was a guilty pleasure for me growing up. But I really liked most of this, my only real gripe being that they recast Charles Martinet with Chris Pratt...and he didn't even attempt an Italian accent!

Jack Black was really good as Bowser, though, and I'm not even a huge fan of his. I still haven't seen Anya Taylor-Joy in anything, but her vocal take on Peach fit the character very well. Having Seth Rogen voice Donkey Kong was interesting - I'm also not a big fan of him but he still made it work.

On the whole, I give the movie a solid 8 out of 10.
