Alien: Romulus (2024)

Practical FX!

The face hugger chase is going to trigger some arachnophobia.

Eh, we'll see. Not getting any indication it's going to be better than any of the sequels yet. Visually this franchise has always been on point.

Looks neat, but visually this franchise hasn't really lost a step and that's not something Alvarez struggles with. My only gripe would be the digital photography looks too clean for a movie harkening back so much to the style of the original film.

I suppose it's too much to ask for in the age of convenience and expedience, but tbh the one moment that made me wince was seeing cgi facehuggers. Not a fan of that, being so used to rewatching the first two movies, but I know expecting practical effect-based facehuggers is kind of a fool's errand.

The tone and aesthetic are both on point so far, plus I trust Fede Álvarez who has emerged as an intriguing voice in the horror genre in just a handful of films.

Having said that, I hope the movie doesn't end up being too polished and the CGI too overboard. If any franchise cries out for some griminess, it's this one. Alien movies need to be dirty and wet, if that makes any sense, so I'm hoping for more practical effects when we see the finished film.

Otherwise the trailer did its job - I'm officially excited :tm$

Fedes track record with horror is excellent so that alone has me hyped.

Alvarez has never shown a sign of skill beyond base, dim witted shock value. His fore into mainstream franchise filmmaking was also a staggeringly incompetent piece of hack work. There are a few okay (in a very shallow way) scenes in Evil Dead but his other movies are pure unadulterated trash.

This is like a couple steps up from having Eli Roth make an Alien movie. Some big steps, but still in the ballpark.
