That's domestic only though. And GvK opened during a worldwide pandemic and opened on HBO Max at the same time.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm loving this Godzilla resurgence. Hell, I even like Zilla 98 for what it was.God, I had forgetton how much more miserable Godzilla fans can be compared to even Star Wars fans....
The people yearn for more kaiju flicks.
Especially if they are as braindead as this one.
Godzilla,Kong & FAMILY!Definitely getting a 3rd, lol!
Godzilla,Kong & FAMILY!
KAIJU! KAIJU! KAIJU!I know this may come as a shock but not every movie needs to have this deep, intricate plot that makes you feel every emotion on the spectrum. It's okay for a movie to be mindless fun. It ain't gonna hurt ya to just turn your brain off to enjoy giant monster action.
Transformers was once churning out billion dollar movies.
Anyway, given how conservative Deadline has been, I think this has a very good chance of beating Dune's opening weekend.
Wonka did do surprisingly well for itself but then again never underestimate a family release in December. And honestly Ghostbusters feels a tad DOA as it had one weekend out and then ZIP Nada.I'm not the biggest fan of the MonsterVerse franchise but NGL, I'm glad to see this doing so well.
In fact, the box office has shown some signs of life lately, with Dune 2, Wonka, Kung Fu Panda, and Ghostbusters all doing well, along with 'smaller' films like Bob Marley, Beekeeper, and Mean Girls.
Hopefully these successes set the stage and position the lucrative 2024 summer season for further upside
Apart from being part of a more or less consistent franchise, GxK also appeals to kids a lot more than Dune 2 so I'm not too surprised about it having similar opening weekend numbers.Honestly it just blows my mind that its projected to even be a stones throw away from from Dune, especially with how anticipated Dune 2 was
I wonder how it's going to perform in the upcoming weeks compared to Dune. On one hand it's a shorter more fun movie that appeals more to younger audiences (like you said) and it basically doesn't really have any sort of competition for five weeks. Dune had Kung Fu Panda, Ghostbusters and this one. On the other hand movies like Godzilla x Kong, Fast & Furious and Transformers are more front-loaded and usually drop significantly in subsequent weeks.Apart from being part of a more or less consistent franchise, GxK also appeals to kids a lot more than Dune 2 so I'm not too surprised about it having similar opening weekend numbers.
I think it'll be hanging around for a while because while April has a few buzzworthy movies like Monkey Man and Civil War, none of them seem to be a major threat to blockbusters.I wonder how it's going to perform in the upcoming weeks compared to Dune. It does make me sad in one way that a wonderful film with genuine craft that is Godzilla Minus One is not even gonna make 1/5th of the braindead schlock that is Godzilla x Kong
F9 also opened during a worldwide pandemic, and it still made $726 million worldwide. That's domestic only though. And GvK opened during a worldwide pandemic and opened on HBO Max at the same time.
That's just how it is for international releases unfortunatelyIt does make me sad in one way that a wonderful film with genuine craft that is Godzilla Minus One is not even gonna make 1/5th of the braindead schlock that is Godzilla x Kong
IMHO you shouldn't be sad because the movie was still by and large a huge box office success and broke many records for the industry. Not only that, it's the first Godzilla movie to win an Academy Award. It does make me sad in one way that a wonderful film with genuine craft that is Godzilla Minus One is not even gonna make 1/5th of the braindead schlock that is Godzilla x Kong
Not to mention its the third highest grossing foreign language film at the US box officeIMHO you shouldn't be sad because the movie was still by and large a huge box office success and broke many records for the industry. Not only that, it's the first Godzilla movie to win an Academy Award.
