This is a continuation thread, the old thread is [split]531633[/split]
And that's the sad part. SW deserves better than any of this. But as long as it has all these things, it's better by virtue of having things that remind us of good SW movies, which somehow makes it a good SW movie, instead of just being a great movie. Not that they don't try, it's just they depend on these things to seem to think it's what makes a good SW movie. A Han Solo movie is emblematic of their thinking. Brand recognition and things we know, despite the inherently terrible idea. It's making SW incredibly limited. I don't know about you, but when I think of SW, I don't just think of SW mutually exclusive with what we've already seen. It's like that's all they think SW can be about.
It won't prove us wrong. This is the fourth film in this plan. We know exactly what we're getting. Why would they possibly change how they make these things when it's made so much money? There's gonna come a point when their plans fail and people see through it and it could be this one or not. Who knows? All I know is that SW is just a brand that reinforces itself now. They're not movies.
Yeah I think this movie especially is purely a novelty thing, and not one that pushes the boundaries like The Avengers. We know Lando lost the Falcon to Han playing some game... do we really need to see that? Nothing about that is inherently interesting. Han did the Kessel run in *number* parsecs. Okay so he flew really fast this one time and keeps bragging about it. Those things were never meant to be more than they were in the original trilogy. Whatever one thinks of the prequel trilogy, at least Lucas tried to expand on a truly interesting idea: the Clone Wars. A huge, mythical sounding galaxy changing event.
It's the things you'd check off a Han Solo movie list. Kessel run? Check. Chewbacca? Check. Sabaac (stupid) check. The Falcon? Check. It's getting into bad fan fiction territory. You're right, all these things were just little things to help illuminate bigger things regarding character in the present. Things only people on Wookiepedia care about or are interested in. And these are actual movies now.
And I agree. They were movies made by someone with a vision. Misguided and wrong, yes, but it was made totally on Lucas's own terms, not now where it's committee made or just there to reinforce what's come before. Listen, the prequels were botched, but they were about something different. It was an inverse of the hero's journey. The deconstruction of it. While simultaneously showing the fall of a democracy and the rise of a dictatorship. Interesting stuff that could have been incredible if executed right! Yet somehow, we just need to be about big guy versus little guy. Lucas, like many creators, was more interested in deconstructing his work, rather than what we're seeing now which is the equivalent of fans when they're kids who are reenacting scenes to their favorite movies with their action figures. See my problem?
There really isn't much more to talk about this movie. I'll be back when the next trailer comes out, but nothing is going to change. At this point, there is no hoping that it will be better because it won't. A first trailer gives us everything we need to know about what we're going to see. And judging by the looks of it, we're in for a rough one. The worst thing will be people attempting to rationalize a Han Solo movie.
But people are gonna eat it up like fast food and forget about it because that's what SW has become. It's just another movie to see on another weekend in the competition of large movies.
There was little to no clone wars in those films. The show did a good job of exploring it though. From the Jedi, Clone, political and civilian perspective.Yeah I think this movie especially is purely a novelty thing, and not one that pushes the boundaries like The Avengers. It is hopefully offering a really good Han Solo story. While I am more optimistic on the overall health of Star Wars, especially post Episode VIII, I sort of agree with him on this movie. I just don't see what this movie will offer other than moments of "Hey, I remember they talked about that in the OT! I like this" type stuff.
It is hopefully offering a really good Han Solo story.
Though this is interesting to me. What about Tobias and Qira are from the, "remember we talked about that in the OT" box?
How do you know that? Especially Qira. Her relationship with Han seems to be a central thing here. The interesting aspect of two people in Qira and Tobias who truly know Han and not in the passive Chewie way. Very small bit in the trailer, but I am curious about what she means about truly knowing him and Han's vulnerable, almost frightened expression.Obviously, you are going to introduce some new characters. But, it will tick off the boxes like the Kessell run, meeting Lando, getting the Falcon, etc. The movie is not about really Qira or any of that, this movie exists to shows us those moments because we love the OT and the hope from what I see is living off that nostalgia.
At the end of the day, like I said in the previous thread, I just don't think the movie will offer me anything that I personally will need. I see myself just longing for Harrison Ford and thinking to myself "Hey, I could watch ANH" instead. To me, THAT is the Han origin movie and really all we needed to know about him. If others feel differently, that's fine. It's just the way I see it.

One, I guess we can all be cynical about Kasdan, but he is the Han Solo guy. I don't think this movie exist because he wants to just do a checklist of things. I think he has a story he wants to tell.
I don't see this as a Han origin, but I guess we shall see.
So I take it you're not really a glass half full type of guy.
What? That is the nature of all stories that come before. Again I ask, why do you think Kasdan wants to do just that?My counter is, if the movie is not about those things then why are they in the movie? Because it is what fans want to see, right? Would we be getting this movie if not for the backstory of Han that we know? I honestly think the answer is no. Again, if you feel differently, far be it from me to tell you Santa Claus doesn't exist and ruin Christmas. It's just how I see this project.
i kinda see this being like how casino royale was the james bond prequel.
qira will be to han like vesper is to bond.
Just so we are clear. According to Doctor Jones The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi have all been cynical cash grabs with no artistic merit and people who go to Celebration are fooling themselves into liking Star Wars. It's not about half glass full/half empty. You can't apply that to a movie like this. I sound cynical because this movie is cynical. I'm not going to fool myself and rationalize thinking this movie will be good. If you want to, then go ahead. Enjoy it. Let's keep pretending these movies and the way they're being run don't have serious problems. As long as I get to see my favorite Star Wars things, then everything is fine!
Not according to Doctor Jones plan.Obvious difference is Casino Royale was a reboot, this is not a reboot. It's a prequel.

What is wrong with fans wanting to see those things? If they work and fit into the story, is that really an issues outside of people being annoyed we know these things at all? This is working on the principle this film works as a film of course.
Also, the Santa Claus bit, that implies a truth I am not willing to see or know. What does that have to do with wanting to see this film?
does not matter as long as it is good.
and i hope this is good.
the teaser looks good.
i have nothing to complain about.
