The Wrestling Thread Is Like A Sexy Piñata...A VERY Sexy Piñata! - Part 237

-Neville wins CW title, good now he needs to have a nice long run with it.

-Wow, Sasha just cannot catch a break. Losing to Nia in like five minutes. Her booking has sucked for months, and last night was no exception.

-Anderson & Gallows winning, better late than never I guess.

-Charlotte vs. Bayley, THE most predictable and obvious ending of the night, no tension or suspense at all there. Also wake me up when Charlotte's long-ass title reigns are over, because I'm so bored of it now.

-It sucks that KO yet again cannot win anything on his own, but at least it wasn't Jericho interfering again.

-Cena vs. AJ was a REALLY good match, and I don't even mind the result (especially since I think that it gives AJ a somewhat better chance of winning at Mania). I only wish that they hadn't have had Cena verbally bury AJ on the go-home show if they were just going to have him win anyway. Also if AJ is stuck with freaking Shane at Mania, it's going to be some Grade-A BS.

-Orton winning the Rumble, boring.

-Agreed!

-Guessing they're just trying to sell her injury angle and build Nia?

-I always prefer a true tag team carrying the belts.

-They put on a good show, decent spots. The ladies are really stepping up their in-ring game! Still, predictable.

-While Strowman's interference set up a feud between him and Reigns, that was completely undone by Reigns eliminating Undertaker.

-Damn good match with both his pulling new tricks out of the hat! Cena showing that he can do more than his 5 Moves of Doom!

-At least it wasn't Reigns. Still, they missed the chance to bring Samoa Joe up and have him make a statement.

The show has some good moments, but the weak spots definitely came from the place of playing it cautious or ignoring the fans.

Having Charlotte beat Bayley wasn't a surprise, though the match was good; the predictability of it hurt it, since other factors, like Charlotte bleeding form her mouth, could have been amped up by a more exciting ending. We know the story-line for Bayley the Underdog, so no one is getting super excited.

KO versus Reigns still feels massively constricted by forcing KO into the role of being the easily conquerable champion who needs help to keep his belt, while Reigns is still booked too strong to really get your support; the brass knuckled superman punch would have been a great way to end the match and let Reigns get ticked when he came back. As a result, Reigns continues to feel like his booking shields are unflappable (event though the guy is skilled enough that he shouldn't need them), and a great wrestler is prevented from being a great heel champion because they don't want him to look strong.

Cruiserweights were good. But they need more crossover matches with HWs to showcase how dangerous their skill is; cordoning them off just makes them feel like a separate, less high profile show.

Styles v Cena was good, and only prevented from being great by the multiple finishers. I don't think you can say that Styles got buried; they booked him to kick out of a top rope AA, and at least they didn't make him Styles Clash Cena in a comparable way before being beaten. Cena sold how hard fought the match was, too. The real question is what's next for both men.

The Rumble had great moments but an ending that was mostly too cautious and then too insistent on Reigns being the surprise finale entrant.

-The "Sasha injury angle" is just lame in-general, as is this feud TBH. Partly because I find Nia so boring.

-I didn't say that the Charlotte/Bayley match wasn't good. It's just that Charlotte's matches are SO predictable these days. Me and everyone that I know called the ending to Roadblock weeks in advance, and we called this won. Heck I even called Bayley losing CLEAN as well. And I'm so ready for Charlotte to lose that title already, it's Triple H reign or terror levels of boring for me by now.

-The Rumble was just boring in-general. No surprise entrants, no cool spots, a boring finish. About the only good thing is that neither Roman nor any of the part-timers won.

Within WWE right now the AA has been elevated to a devastating finisher

Not really, everybody has kicked out of it for the last 2 years. That's why we see it so often in his matches, and it's why he's done avalanche AAs a lot.

Possible Fastlane and Wrestlemania spoilers from WOR:

Owens vs Goldberg main events Fastlane, Goldberg wins
Goldberg vs. Lesnar at Wrestlemania for the title

Oh, I agree with the Sasha/Nia, just offering a possible explanation.

I got you on Charlotte/Bayley. Just pointing out how improved the women's division has become. They used to bet nothing but eye candy and a bathroom break. Now, they're putting on matches that, in some cases, rival the men. I am ready for someone interesting to come derail Charlotte. I just think it won't be until Asuka makes the jump.

Yeah, the Rumble left a lot to be desired. I wanted to see Lesnar and Goldberg come in, around 15 or 16, clear the ring, and somehow eliminate each other. Kind of reset the match if you will.

I LOVED his double AA where he did the flip over AJ and came up with him on his shoulders! That was impressive.

Please, no. That doesn't need to happen. Those two can put on a great Wrestlemania match without that stipulation.

This company

I've been annoyed at Sasha's injury schtick for awhile now. Just let the girl wrestle dangit.

Otherwise, it sounds like the Rumble was a let down. Not sure I get why Randy gets the nod. I mean, he's super over when he's a face, but he's some weird heelish guy in a midcard program.

Also, the WWE has killed the RAW Women's division with Charlotte "2000 era Triple H" Flair. I'll pay attention to the Smackdown women who've been killing it since the Branch Extension started.

So correct me if I'm mistaken, but so far the WM card looks to be:

Taker/Reigns
Lesnar/Goldberg (possibly for Universal title)
Owens/Jericho (possibly for US Title)
Orton/Bray (Possibly for WWE Title)
Cena/ ??? (Possibly Samoa Joe)
Seth/HHH
AJ/Shane
Dean/??? (Possibly Corbin or Miz for IC Title)
Cruiserwight Ladder match
Bayley vs Sasha vs Charlotte vs Nia Jax (Raw Women's Title)
Alexa vs Becky (SD Women's Title)
Cesaro vs Sheamus
The Club vs ??? (Possibly Enzo/Cass for tag Titles)
American Alpha vs ??? (Possibly Usos for Tag Titles)

The last few are pure speculation after last night, but I'm not sure how I'm feeling about the top of the card.

Making my rare entry into the wrestling thread guys.

But why give Orton a Royal Rumble win in 2017? How does that elevate new talent?

They need to give Sasha something to do so that Bayley can be the main focus of the title hunt. Sort of like why Naomi is suddenly in the title picture for SD, while Becky feuds with Mickie. They have their A story set, but are looking for a B story now.

It doesn't have to be an injury angle. She'd been injured before, we get it. Enough with the fake injury crap. You've crapped all over her enough over the last few months, just let the woman wrestler.

Also the fact that Becky might be out of the title hunt is such BS given how awful they treated her during the Alexa feud.

Also why is that fool Cena anywhere near 16 world titles? The man isn't fit to lace the boots of the people he's ahead of and some that never got a world title opportunity.

Becky will most likely be back in the hunt for Mania, unless they decide to give Nikki the belt again. But this feud with Mickie is a way of killing time since Mania is still 2 months away and they need something to keep the story from dragging.

As for Sasha, it's the big problem with their Women's division where they feel the need to protect everyone. They will let Sasha lose "injured" so that it serves as an excuse as to why she lost. That way, when she wins, it seems like she won because she 100% and is that good.

I wasn't too impressed with the Royal Rumble myself. I've never had PPV, and now that I have the network, I can finally watch live events. (So far though, I've only watched BackLash, Survivor Series & last night's Rumble.) But I was excited to watch my first live Royal Rumble, so it sucks that it left me feeling so underwhelmed.

I was hoping for at least one surprise entrant...and then #30 being Reigns? That didn't do anything for me. (I don't hate him like some, but I also don't appreciate being force fed him either.) I'd like Orton having won a little more if he wasn't in that ridiculous Wyatt angle. That storyline isn't making a lick of sense for me. I was really confused that it was him winning the whole thing.

I did enjoy the crusierweight match and the world title match though. But overall, it was pretty predictable and boring. Doubt I'll be tuning in for the next live event.

Orton winning the Rumble and being involved in the title scene at WM is only interesting if it involves him facing Wyatt or if he jumps ship to RAW or if Cena loses the title before WM.

Orton vs Cena for the upteenth time is kind of meaningless when you have so much new talent to work with.

since when has the Rumble ever been about that?

I know there are people that tell themselves its about that

but its not

My friend and I were watching this match thinking, "If they finish the match without taking out the Pyramid of Chairs, we're going to be very disappointed!" They didn't disappoint. Well, not on that spot, anyway.

but why can't it be?

you give a new talent like Balor or Joe or Sami or even Wyatt and let them survive the odds, win, and get that title shot and boost going into WM.

what good does it do to have a veteran like Orton win, especially when he's (presumably) going to face another veteran (Cena) for the upteenth time.

Neither Orton nor Cena needs that boost or momentum.

It's his dedication to the job. He's always been the company man from day 1. He's done absolutely every angle they've asked of him and more. That counts for a lot! I used to work in the portrait business and we had this photographer. He wasn't the best by any means BUT, we could call him on Tuesday afternoon and ask him to travel 200-300 miles away by Thursday morning and he would do it. No hesitation at all! Meanwhile, the better photographers would whine about smaller shoots and longer travel distances. Arnold outlasted them all. Cena is a lot like that photographer. Is he the best wrestler? No. Is he the most over with the fans? Debatable. But, like him or not, he's always giving everything he has to the business and his fans. That's why he is where is is.

Plus, do you really think the WWE is going to purposely bury the guy who's granted more wishes for The Make-A-Wish foundation than everyone else combined?

I also don't like it when we call Cena a part timer. Makes him sound like Lesnar or the Undertaker. He's still a full-time WWE talent, he just takes time off every now and then, because of injuries and to do other stuff, but he's still repping the WWE out there.
