Paramount Pictures developing Sonic the Hedgehog movie

I'm generally against "listen to the fans" approach, because it's oppressive towards creativity and fans frequently don't know what they want. But some choices are so inept, that it's probably less has to do with fans desires and more with common sense. I mean, what the actual **** were they thinking with the original design? It's basic care for the source.

I think they were trying to go with a realistic approach much like Michael Bay had done with the original transformers in his aggressive redesign for Optimus Prime & Megatron rather than going with the iconic g1 design that eventually made its way to live action in Bumblebee.

It was really smart to apply that to Sonic. Or Mario.

Enjoy the show!
Just got home and I did! Fun time from start to finish, really. Seeing Jim Carrey doing his thing again was worth the price of admission alone, but they did a real solid job. The human side of things probably could have been a little better, but it was definitely enjoyable.
That one scene where Robotnik is in his carrier arming all his robots is classic 90s era Carrey. If you've seen it you know what I mean lol.

That was great

It's a decent film, I think when they do the sequel, Sonic needs to be slightly toned down as the hyperactivity was the verge of being annoying and also cut the pop culture references as they do nothing but date the film.

Jim Carrey looked like he was having a blast and more like the Jim Carrey of old rather than Kidding/Eternal Sunshine Jim Carrey which is good but he's much better when he's a bit wacky. James Marsden was fine but honestly, the human characters that wasn't Robotnik didn't add much to the film.

Like I said in my review, Sonic needs to be a teen with an attitude and less of an elementary schooler.

As I've said in the past, Sonic's design is classic and iconic. It's culturally ingrained. His design is sacrosanct. This character is like Mickey Mouse, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, or Bugs Bunny. You can't just liberally mess around with a design like that.

I imagine they felt since this was a live action movie Sonic needed to look "real." LIke he could really exist on Earth and ditch the more cartoon character elements. The designers for Sonic took cues from Mickey Mouse for the original games.

What I dislike about Hollywood when they make adaptations, artists are so arrogant that they think it's important to fix what isn't broken and improve on perfection. They have to leave their own mark and take on things.

Poor James Marsden. He wasn't even the first or second choice for this movie. The studio clearly wanted Chris Evans or Chris Pratt.
Didn't Paul Rudd turn it down? Some of the lines Marsden had would have been more comedic with Rudd in the role, certainly. Marsden was fine, but I think this could have gone from good to really good with a better lead.

I can see why it would've been offered to Rudd. I mean Tom's a pretty generic character. It wouldn't have been much of a stretch for anyone to play him. He's just sort of a generic average dude. Rudd playing him wouldn't have been much a stretch. Heck, I could've seen Kevin Hart in there.

Tom was essentially the same character that James Marsden played in Hop.

It will be interesting to see how WB tackle Tom and Jerry for their live action film. Their previous CGI/live action attempts with Scooby Doo and Yogi Bear haven't quite worked in terms of designs.

Check this delightful Easter nugget from the film a minor story note that occurred in the film spoiler warning view at your own risk.

Having Evans in this film may have been a big box office draw, but I think Marsden did a great job as Tom. The character was never going to steal the show like Carrey. Tom was the straight man, but Marsden a fine job in the role. You could really feel the comradery between the two.

And I think if they did get Evans, he would've distracted general audiences from Sonic's character and they'd focus more on Tom.

I like that concept art. The original design didn't need too much changing imo. Just a few minor tweaks and they could've made him just as endearing as the Sonic we got now.

I do kinda wish he didn't have gloves though. This is a different Sonic. He lives like a hobo, collecting trash, hence his beat up old sneakers it looks like he found in somebody's garbage. Wearing cartoony gloves like Felix the Cat contrasts with that story element. (They could always give him gloves later)

Sonic without gloves would have been a bit weird, I don't think I've ever seen the Sonic characters without their gloves or indeed the likes of Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny.

People underestimate sonic time and time again. There was a reason the backlash for his design was so high. People love the character. It was a staple in the 90s and early 2000s and he’s a video game icon. Bad games or not. I’m glad it’s making money. Just makes ign look even stupider when they said “ sonic was never good”

I figured they could just take the designs from the Cats and Dogs movies and go with those. Those flicks along with Azrael from the Smurfs movies are pretty easy to do.
