Making a Batman Begins comparison is just ridiculous imo when movies like Ant-Man are making major bank.
Do you think that WB will be satisfied if the upcoming Batflick makes over twice its budget and some DVD sales but grosses less than Ant-Man? hell no. BB also made most its money domestically and the difference between markets today and then is astronomical. Next to BB BOP is a bomb..
I've said this in the past, this applies to all MCU films post Avengers. You can no longer look at MCU films in a vacuum and use them for fair comparisons against other superhero films. They're a part of a well-oiled machine. Also, comparison of BoP with Ant-Man doesn't make sense as Ant-man was released when Marvel Studios brand was fully established after 11 successful MCU movies, when people were already trusting Marvel movies, and were actually looking forward to movies under that banner. Unless you think that DC is now in same position as Marvel and is as popular as Marvel.
Also, how can BoP, a sequel to divisive (and hated by some) Suicide Squad movie by DC brand which does not enjoy same level of trust as Marvel be compared to MCU's Ant-man ?
Would Mad Max Fury Road be considered a bomb by some standards in this thread? Yet, WB would've jumped on the chance for another if they weren't in a legal battle with Miller. Fury Road has also made a bit of bank on digital/bluray since then.
Budget: $154.6-$185.1 million
DOMESTIC (41%)
$153,636,354
INTERNATIONAL (59%)
$221,100,000
WORLDWIDE
$374,736,354
The question is how much did they spend on marketing. If the rule of thumb is half of their budget, then yes, it was a box office failure.Would Mad Max Fury Road be considered a bomb by some standards in this thread? I don't get the comparison either. We are talking about 2 movies that were released 17 and 12 years ago respectively back when only a few superheroes really did well.I've got to ask what does this reply have to do with the Tweet? It neither addresses the Birds of Flip comment or the easy target of BoP being the worst comic movie ever. Saying one flop is doing better than two other flops doesn't prove the movie isn't a flop.
Agreed, it doesn't look like a movie that should require anything more then $40 mil (or maybe $50 mil). Also, it's reported budget is $85 mil not $97 mil which was "estimated" by some, I think $85 mil is after receiving some tax breaks, but I don't have any source for that. After seeing it, I’m at a loss as to what they spent $97 million on. BoP looks like a film that cost half that much. It doesn’t look bad, mind you, but it sure doesn’t look expensive.
Yeah it was 97 minus 12 in tax credits for 85. Was reported by Deadline a while back iirc.Agreed, it doesn't look like a movie that should require anything more then $40 mil (or maybe $50 mil). I think WB shot themselves on foot by releasing BoP as 'R' rated movie. For example, a women oriented film, Little Women (2019) with a budget of $40 mil, opened to $17 mil (approx.) but reached $$108 mil as it was a PG movie.
Which means it has now made more than The Predator ($160 mil.), Red Sparrow ($150 mil.), John Wick 2 ($171 mil.), Charlie's Angels ($70 mil.), Ghost in the Shell ($169 mil.) and The Huntsman : Winter's War ($165 mil.)
