Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Making a Batman Begins comparison is just ridiculous imo when movies like Ant-Man are making major bank.

Do you think that WB will be satisfied if the upcoming Batflick makes over twice its budget and some DVD sales but grosses less than Ant-Man? hell no. BB also made most its money domestically and the difference between markets today and then is astronomical. Next to BB BOP is a bomb..

Also, comparison of BoP with Ant-Man doesn't make sense as Ant-man was released when Marvel Studios brand was fully established after 11 successful MCU movies, when people were already trusting Marvel movies, and were actually looking forward to movies under that banner. Unless you think that DC is now in same position as Marvel and is as popular as Marvel.

Also, how can BoP, a sequel to divisive (and hated by some) Suicide Squad movie by DC brand which does not enjoy same level of trust as Marvel be compared to MCU's Ant-man ?

I've said this in the past, this applies to all MCU films post Avengers. You can no longer look at MCU films in a vacuum and use them for fair comparisons against other superhero films. They're a part of a well-oiled machine.

I've got to ask what does this reply have to do with the Tweet? It neither addresses the Birds of Flip comment or the easy target of BoP being the worst comic movie ever. Saying one flop is doing better than two other flops doesn't prove the movie isn't a flop.

Would Mad Max Fury Road be considered a bomb by some standards in this thread? Yet, WB would've jumped on the chance for another if they weren't in a legal battle with Miller. Fury Road has also made a bit of bank on digital/bluray since then.

Budget: $154.6-$185.1 million

DOMESTIC (41%)
$153,636,354
INTERNATIONAL (59%)
$221,100,000
WORLDWIDE
$374,736,354

If my quick math is correct then I would say no to it being a bomb based on the lowest budget. Is it a flop ? Maybe, it's should be very close to breaking even so I'm not sure how to answer this one. I would say it's a underperformer but I also don't know what the studio expected.

The question is how much did they spend on marketing. If the rule of thumb is half of their budget, then yes, it was a box office failure.

And yet, WB still wants to make another one. I'm hoping we see these characters again tho. The marketing for FR wasn't the best either.

I don't get the comparison either. We are talking about 2 movies that were released 17 and 12 years ago respectively back when only a few superheroes really did well.

I don't think BOP should even been mentioned in the worst CBM but to deflect it's gross in comparison to movies over a decade older because it's easier for them compare, than with other movies that have been released in the past few years.

After seeing it, I’m at a loss as to what they spent $97 million on. BoP looks like a film that cost half that much. It doesn’t look bad, mind you, but it sure doesn’t look expensive.
Agreed, it doesn't look like a movie that should require anything more then $40 mil (or maybe $50 mil). Also, it's reported budget is $85 mil not $97 mil which was "estimated" by some, I think $85 mil is after receiving some tax breaks, but I don't have any source for that.

Yeah it was 97 minus 12 in tax credits for 85. Was reported by Deadline a while back iirc.

If you hated BoP, I suppose you’re entitled to a gratifying schadenfreude at its box office stumble. :oldrazz:

OTOH, if you enjoyed BoP, I’d suggest resisting the urge to retroactively downgrade it based on its financial shortcomings. Needless to say, there are plenty of good movies that are deemed financial and/or popular failures. E.g., Scott Pilgrim, Children of Men, Blade Runner (and its sequel), Iron Giant, Ali, etc. (the list is long). I still think highly of Whedon’s Serenity. And I’m not alone; it got very good reviews and audience scores. Yet by all measures, this film positively “bombed.”

Moral of the story: you’re allowed to like a movie that didn’t do well. :word:

For comparison, JW2 made $569 K after 26 days.

I think WB shot themselves on foot by releasing BoP as 'R' rated movie. For example, a women oriented film, Little Women (2019) with a budget of $40 mil, opened to $17 mil (approx.) but reached $$108 mil as it was a PG movie.

Bad Boys For Life is also R rated though and showing really good legs.

Eh, a none R at the risk of creative freedom tho? I don't know. Their R rated risk with Joker worked for them, so why not roll again? I give WB props for having them balls to do so, it might not of paid off completely, but I'm glad some other big film company are taking risks. One of the best moments was HQ sniffin' that white powder and getting her Popeye strength from it. You can't have that moment without that R. lol

Gunn's Skwad flick will most likely be an R too.

Little Women is just one of those Oscar buzzed films that managed to more than triple its opening weekend at the box office. Its really nothing new. I don't think its mpaa rating is a factor.

As for bop, it just didnt appeal to the general audience. Even if it got a pg 13 rating, it would have still struggled. Joker, Logan and the Deadpool films are all r rated and didn't struggle to earn $100 million in North America.

Almost $191 mil. worldwide at this point.

Which means it has now made more than The Predator ($160 mil.), Red Sparrow ($150 mil.), John Wick 2 ($171 mil.), Charlie's Angels ($70 mil.), Ghost in the Shell ($169 mil.) and The Huntsman : Winter's War ($165 mil.).

Is this supposed to be good news?

The film was released during a weird time. Should it have been a PG-13 film that was teetering on the edge of an R rating? Probably, but I think it’ll do a lot once it’s released digitally. It’ll make a good chunk of money on that alone.

We're still debating the R rating?
There's too many successful R rated movies to prove that that's nonsense.

Even if Harley fans are all younger (debatable), younger people still show up to R rated movies. Hell a lot of movie theaters don't even check IDs
