Justice League Zack Snyder Directing Justice League (The Snyder Cut Edition)

I was always under the impression that Hal WAS quippy and ad-libby... at least in the animated stuff I have seen...

My take on the GL movie is that it came off as geared more to a younger audience even tho it may not have been intended. More wrong tone to me than anything else... and wrong way to portray some characters including and especially Parallax...

I just looked up the film to remember Parallax and noted it was directed by Martin Campbell...
He directed Casino Royal (with cheese)... one of my favorite Bond films and one of the best IMO.
Go figure...

Yeah, he can be quippy, but it's more in that cool, 1950's swagger-action hero kind of way. That's how I've always seen him, anyway. In the New 52 and some of the animation, he came across as immature-cocky rather than charismatic-cocky. Sort of like the difference in how Bruce Lee was played in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood where Tarantino had him as annoyingly brash rather than cool-cocky. And Tarantino tried to justify that by saying Bruce Lee was cocky, but there are different types of cocky. That's my roundabout way of saying Hal has been written like a adult frat boy quite a bit in recent years rather than the more sure handed, charismatic, quippy Hollywood lead type that I think Hal really is personality-wise.

Yeah i think Campbell was just completely out of his depth with GL plus there were so many cooks in the kitchen with the script. There was no clear vision. James Gunn’s GoTG was a good template for a Green Lantern movie. GoTG was all in space and funny enough, i believe it was considerably cheaper to make than GL so I’m not buying budgetary constraints as the issue lol

On the quippy sarcasm scale, Hal Jordan skews more in the direction of Nathan Drake than Chandler Bing. And Reynolds' brand of sarcasm has always skewed more Bing.

Sony Imageworks, at least back then, was a notorious money pit of a VFX studio (I'll never get over Men in Black 3 costing more than The Avengers), so I'm sure that was part of the issue, but yeah, the movie had bigger problems for sure.

Grace made the Ryan Reynolds stuff sound like a done deal a few months back

Wait so is Jared gonna cut his eyebrows off and **** again just for these reshoots?

He also directed Mask of Zorro, which was also great (its sequel, not so much). And Goldeneye, the best Brosnan Bond flick. The Foreigner was solid too. Martin Campbell's a really good action director who could've directed a damn good superhero flick, imo - just not one so dependent on CGI. That ain't his wheelhouse. Plus the script sucked, mangling the defining qualities of it's main character. Hal Jordan's anything BUT a reluctant hero. And 95% of that movie should've been set in goddamn space.

Also, Reynolds will always be wrong for Hal Jordan, imo.

Campbell directed two of the best Bond flicks so far. Casino Royale and Goldeneye. Also, this definitely belongs in the Bond thread, but Brosnan was let down by the scripts/movies which followed. I have no doubt in my mind he'd be considered a great Bond like Craig is today. I do have a soft spot for Tomorrow Never Dies. Eh.

It was honestly kinda wild how much he leveled up. Man had a new energy.

Hardy Amies will change a man.

Nah, the technology is there.

I am pretty sure Ryan will be in it, I mean he openly endorsed it last year lol.

ThiccGrace got an one on one interview with him too, can’t be more obvious, her source of SC is, Team Snyder itself lol. I treat her as Snyder’s mouthpiece, so when she talks about Johns, it reflect Team ZS’ attitude

Honestly, I would be very curious to see how Reynolds GL would be under the direction of Snyder, so I am all for it.

A more “grounded” superhero would have been a better fit for Martin Campbell.

I love Ryan Reynolds and I know this sounds extremely petty but visually, he does not fit the character to me. And although he can pull off dramatic roles no doubt, anytime he does something funny, you’re gonna go “that’s such a Ryan Reynolds thing”. Kinda like Jim Carrey.

Have to say from the brief snippets, Steppenwolf looks a lot more menacing or intimidating with the armour change.

Which is a good thing considering this was the Justice League's first outing so you want the antagonist to at least look like he's a threat.

Josstice Steppenwolf looked so stupid.

So, I'm finally caching up with The Boys (man, its so so good) and you know, I think with some adjustments, an ongoing Justice League show could work without it costing $500 million bajillion dollars. I think you could have a modestly budgeted show thats well shot, acted, directed and great special effects, but obviously it would have to focus a lot of character development to save on special effects which wouldnt be a bad thing. Idk, just sayin', I think it could work with a reasonable budget.

Yes but Zack isn’t going to sacrifice all his special effects and big budget plans for something smaller and more intimate. How they can greenlight a sequel is beyond me. Maybe these cameos can help turn the heads of the general public. Margot Robbie and Ryan Reynolds is a good start. They’ve have to announce them and market them though. But it feels like such a long shot that Snyder will be able to continue this story.
