I was always under the impression that Hal WAS quippy and ad-libby... at least in the animated stuff I have seen...
My take on the GL movie is that it came off as geared more to a younger audience even tho it may not have been intended. More wrong tone to me than anything else... and wrong way to portray some characters including and especially Parallax...
I just looked up the film to remember Parallax and noted it was directed by Martin Campbell...
He directed Casino Royal (with cheese)... one of my favorite Bond films and one of the best IMO.
Go figure...
Yeah, he can be quippy, but it's more in that cool, 1950's swagger-action hero kind of way. That's how I've always seen him, anyway. In the New 52 and some of the animation, he came across as immature-cocky rather than charismatic-cocky. Sort of like the difference in how Bruce Lee was played in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood where Tarantino had him as annoyingly brash rather than cool-cocky. And Tarantino tried to justify that by saying Bruce Lee was cocky, but there are different types of cocky. That's my roundabout way of saying Hal has been written like a adult frat boy quite a bit in recent years rather than the more sure handed, charismatic, quippy Hollywood lead type that I think Hal really is personality-wise.
