My buddy Matt gave me one of those phone calls you HAVE to take so I got delayed from viewing this chapter "live" so gonna start on it right now.
So... Here we go.
1. Starting off with Mayfield pretty heavy from intro to first scenes. Wonder if that portends a lot of character development? Or like like LOST we'll get to know him only to have him offed by the end of the episode? I kinda wish we got more POV in the SW universe of people like him. I mean, I'm sorry but... Not every single Stormtrooper or Imperial funcionary or officer could have been a mustache twirling villain or evil but incompetent boob. Filoni and crew had fun with the whole "Stromtroopers are ****" meming of the Empire's military but... that's actually not a good thing to so unthinkingly embrace. Maybe it's great for jokes but it undercuts the threat of the villains as well as the efforts by the heroes. Is Mando a badass or are Stromtroopers just absolute ass with no redeeming qualities at all? Cuz... One will affect the other to a degree. Plus, again, it flattens something that should have texture. Footsoldiers of an evil regime or not the Military of the Empire had to have SOMETHING going for it having kept a stranglehold on the galaxy for decades. Show THAT. Also to note... And sorry to harp on this but... Mayfield should have recognized Boba Fett. He doesn't have to KNOW Boba personally. (He doesn't have to be Boba's ex-roommate or some nonsense... Boba being Mayfield's uncle is shrinking the universe.) But him not KNOWING of Boba Fett is what's head scratching, again, considering the most feared Bounty Hunter of the franchise has only been out of circulation for five years.
2. Love Boba as the no nonsense vet of the group and hope that's his role more or less at the forefront. I don't "trust" Boba yet, I think his honorable stance on things is... more pliable than it appears on the surface. He does what he says he will... But I'm not sure we should assume more than that. Which is cool... Makes him a variable in any given situation and adds grist to the drama mill in trying to figure out exactly when or if another shoe will drop. Also... The Imperials might know Fett? Strange.
So... He IS a known quantity in the world Mando and the other show characters run in, huh?
3. Mando is so attached to Grogu and invested in him he's willing to bend "the way". Love it. The audience knows his kneejerk reaction is to follow his culture's path regardless of the circumstances. That he went right to "take off the helmet to get back the child" shows his connection. Plus... It's SW. Gotta have one scene of the good guys dressed up as the bad guys, right?
4. And this convo, or at least Mayfeild talking at Mando is exactly what I mean about adding texture. Mayfeild is for sure a scumbag, but he's also a person whose experiences and observations inform him and who he is or at least believes he is. You can call it self serving and him justifying himself, and it is, but what he's saying to Mando has some ring of truth to it. And... I just like that he's a person. A scummy dude that was a foot soldier to fascists, sure, but still a person. Still counting on him and Fennic to have sniper battle at some point as it stands now. Maybe I'll be wrong?
5. Rogue One had some, I think, uncomfortable for American audience's druthers, scense that evoked the War On Terror years and the occupation of Iraq (remember when That took up so much space in our collective psyche? It wasn't that long ago, and it for sure doesn't feel that way for the people of the Middle East... But I digress...) and this is giving me similar vibes. And I can hear the social media "outrage industry" already but to those who have issues... Literally everything in the OT touched on the politics and issues swirling in the culture when Lucas was conceiving it. Nixon, Watergate, Vietnam... There's commentary about all that and more in the OT. It's not JUST a heroe's journey gloss that takes it's only inspiration from folklore and mythology.
6. So... Chapter 14 was giving props to Kill Bill and this week it's Fury Road? Coolie cool.
7. And as I was saying... Gotta have the Imperials show SOME kind of competency. And here we are... Stormtroopers (And... What are the beige guys?) that can hit a target. It's not THAT hard to do Lucasfilm. Seeing things from the Imperial perspective is something I always think the SW universe can only be enhanced by.
8. Wow... So ALOT to unpack with one moment. Djarin is in the Imperial system? Or was it just that he's willing to be scanned and have his face on record in their system because there's no record of him anywhere else? As Mayfield noted, he's bending and breaking a lot of his own rules for the kid. Letting Mayfield see his face is kinda huge given all that's come before. I'm now starting to wonder... Is Mando planning on killing Mayfeild just when we've gotten to get a peek under his scumbag exterior? Cool that the ex-Imp sharpshooter is coming in clutch with his knowledge of the culture of the Empire's military.
9. Oh my God... That look Mando just gave Mayfied. "No... Not NOW. NOW is when you decide to start talking like a Rebel?"
10. Jesus Christ... I was thinking at best they'd go slow burn with Mayfield. If he lived past the episode we'd maybe get some more development of him either coming to terms with his Imperial service or he'd just die still being the scumbag he was introduced as. Okay... No going back to the Empire for him! Also... Shades of Django Unchained. Favs and Filoni are Tarantino fans for sure.
11. Nice to see Slave 1 is as I would expect Boba's ship to be. Full of as many surprises as the man himself.
Well... Another crackerjack episode. Solid well done Star Wars all around and kind of exactly what I want from this franchise in a streaming show. What I loved most, with some small slight reservations, was the way this played totally in the wheelhouse of Star Wars a morality tale with a character's redemption as it were, while doing it in a way that I honestly didn't see coming so it kept me on edge and engaged the whole time. I will say, similar to Fennic... I'm not sure what we saw of Burr's character the first time in any way shape or form indicated the textures and depths they chose to display in this episode. It feels... a bit forced. A bit. But I really, really liked the details of how they executed it so, I'm willing to hand wave away my issues. While not a mind blowing or showy outing in terms of direction Famuyiwa just delivered an immersive chapter of this story that made you feel in the environment and that it was a real lived in place, which is what I always want from Star Wars. A little bit ****ty to leave Mayfield on the planet rather than drop him off on some more civilized world but hey... Free is free, no? And again, the way this both made you empathize with Mayfield, get Mando the info he needed and put some more details into the world of the Imperial remnants all in a way I didn't see coming exactly was (Chef's kiss), magnifico!
That last part, in conjunction with Mando taking off the helmet, well... He's out for blood. His commitment to the child is now all he has left in the world and lo' to those that get in his way. How does this all wrap up with only one chapter for the season left?
