Falcon and Winter Soldier Season 1, Episode 2: “The Star Spangled Man” (SPOILERS)

Speaking of love interests, I hope they keep that out of this show. I would especially hate Sharon being reduced to a love interest for either character. The show should focus on what it has been focusing on: Steve's legacy, Sam's internal conflict with the shield, Bucky's trauma, and the issues Bucky and Sam have with each other.
Totally agreed

Also time to give Sharon a bit of time to become a properly developed character without throwing her straight into another relationship.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do tiger pictures relate to bisexuality?

This may be Tumblr reading too much into things, but apparently on Tinder there was an influx of people posting tiger pictures and it was predominantly men posting the pictures.

Implying that Bucky's comments about tiger pictures meant he was looking at men's profiles.

Carl is 69. If they do create a series centered around a black super soldier from the 50s, they'll definitely need another actor.

Unless I didn't get what you meant.

Yeah, I don’t think I followed Raven’s post. Surely they’d need someone younger for the flashbacks unless they use that de-aging technology.

While he's 69 he looks a lot younger. He doesn't really look that different from when he was in Alias. He does not look in real life like he did in that scene where he was made up to look much older.

I don't know how old Isaiah Bradley is meant to be but what I'm saying is that if there are flashbacks then they'll probably have Lumby as he normally looks. Otherwise why not just get an old actor who actually looks the age he was meant to be in that episode instead of having an actor in makeup?

I've gotta say, I never thought we'd see Battlestar adapted in the MCU. Feige really does "get it".
Yes sir :cwink:

I was hopefully after Iron Man 1 and TWS that supporting characters like Rhodey, Sam and Bucky would become persistent MCU characters, and not only have they all appeared in numerous films of the main characters they are supporting along with numerous team films, they are all leading their own D+ shows. And now Feige is taking it to the next level and we are getting to enjoy even deeper into the MCU with lower profile characters getting developed. Imagine thinking we’d be getting Falcon and Bucky headlining a live action show featuring Battlestar a couple of decades ago.

Oh gotya. How young do you think they can get away with making Lumbly look without de-aging?

They... did get an older actor. Maybe not quite as old as he is playing but it’s not like Lumbly could pass for a 30-year-old.

Loved the episode and I like how they are portraying John Walker so far. Think its funny he calls Bucky by his nickname like he's known him for years. Bucky is probably cringing every time he hears it lol.

Also I thought it was neat that they introduced Isiah Bradley in this story. I had speculated they were gonna go down this route but still great to see it and in episode 2 no doubt.
Ha, and he already joked to Sam about not having the right to call him that, never mind Walker. Must really annoy him coming from that guy lol.

Maybe late 40s or early 50s. They could do a little bit of deaging but he won't need that much. He mainly needs to dye his hair so there's less grey or shave his head but he's still in pretty good shape. It's a bit like how Samuel L Jackson doesn't look super old as Fury but could look older in other roles when he has grey hair.

So, a few years back, I remember crossing a street trying to look for my bus back home after getting out of jury duty. I was looking at my phone for directions while crossing the crosswalk, thinking it was alright to pass. As I’m about to cross, a cop, who was being overtly angry, brakes his car suddenly and tells me, “Put away your damn phone!!!” I was shaken, then immediately became really angry. I admittedly made an honest mistake, but he definitely could have been calmer about it.

That incident has stuck with me and colored my view of people in positions of authority, wielding their power like a toy or yelling at someone hatefully just because they woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. I still think back to that moment, and imagine the kind of treatment a black man or woman would’ve gotten in that same situation without the privilege that I have.

So, whenever I see a scene in tv or film where any black man or woman gets confronted or harassed by cops, I unconsciously seethe and tremble in anger, tense up and clench my fist. Seeing Sam get approached by those police officers made me want to jump through my screen and throttle them and say, “He’s a ****ing human being just like you and everyone else, you dumb ****ing a**holes!!!”

Basically, what I’m saying is that the scene did its job. I still can’t believe they went there, but I’m glad they did. People are people, and wielding a badge doesn’t give you the right to impose your authority or lash out at someone.

@flickchick85 You really thought the VFX in the truck fight was bad? The thing that kept going through my mind was that this must have been filmed with the same method they used on The Mandalorian it looked so good to me. A slight step below feature film level? I'll grant that but saying that the truck sequence was better looking than some MCU film's set pieces from just a few years back and on a streaming show at that.
Just looked like your standard bad TV green screen to me. If we do learn it was the Mandalorian tech, I'll be shocked, and then I'll just say lighting is still clearly an art form, even with shortcuts, lol.

I'll let the reading public decide.

You really don't see the difference? It's like night (or in this case, indoors) and day to me. :funny: If they ARE using the same tech, the Mando team did a much better job of creating the illusion of sunlight/outdoors, imo. Like, I think maybe some shots in the F&TWS one were ACTUALLY shot outdoors, which just makes the ones that clearly weren't stand out even more.

It isn't helped by the MCU's typical bland cinematography and neutral color grading. Mando doesn't have that issue.

I think that it has to do with most dating profiles that feature photos of people hanging out with tigers are men and not women.

My $.02.

I’m not saying Bucky is bisexual, or that the show is suggesting it.

I will say it sure felt like Sebastian was playing that bar scene in TFA as Bucky being jealous of Peggy.

But anyhoo.

This is the first time I've seen that suggested. He seemed jealous of Steve to me. A reversal of the earlier scene when Bucky and Steve were at the expo with the girls. Id go so far as to say every Bucky Steve scene pre serum was used to later emphasize Steve's changes and the reversal of roles post serum. Before Steve was invisible to girls when Bucky was around, and now Bucky is invisible to girls when Steve is around.

Love the show, loved this episode, but there's one minor little nitpick that I have... why hire Sam to fly missions "for the Air Force", when the Air Force literally has a Colonel within its ranks that can also fly? I'm talking, of course, about Rhodey/War Machine. Or at the very least, why aren't Rhodes and Sam teaming up for these missions?

I mean I think we can probably assume Rhodey's on missions of his own.

Well The Powerbroker is his own separate character from the comics. Though there's speculation they'll change it here to be someone like Thaddeus Ross or other suspects.

We don't know if Hydra has anything to do with this, or if Hydra even functionally still exists. And keep in mind, the MCU's version of Helmut Zemo was never Hydra, he just took advantage of their technology and their leaked files for his own purposes.

Hydra doesn't need to still exist for the Power Broker to be connected to Hydra. Not everyone who once was a member died, after all, and we know some Hydra remnants existed at *least* circa the first Ant-Man movie.

. . . also, saying Zemo was "never Hydra" is maybe *technically* true but only in a not especially meaningful sense. He was a well positioned state security officer in a government which was wholly owned and controlled by Hydra, and who knew enough about Hydra activity and operations to climb the ladder up to the organizations deepest darkest secrets. Which is to say, if he wasn't technically Hydra, it was because Hydra didn't feel the need to hand out ID badges to every well-informed auxiliary.

It's possible after Tony's death. Rhodes has retired from active service as War Machine.

Not every mission is suited for War Machine. Rhodey is good and useful, but he has a different skill and power set. You call Sam when you want to do stealthy recon insertion and exfiltration, and you call Rhodey when you want to flatten everything for several miles around. *cough*

Maybe Armor Wars takes place at the same time and he's preoccupied with that?

Never heard of the Isaiah Bradley character but now I need that story told.
