Season 1, Episode 2: "Heritage" (SPOILERS)

I hope they find a balance with the brothers in which each contribute their best to the relationship just like the Winchester (Sam & Dean) . Jonathan is the older and mature brother and Jordan is the younger smartass bro .

Oh ma god, Crisis made Edge Australian!!!!

Anyway, great episode. Maybe I'm weird, but I am far more interested in the story of the Kents moving to Smallville than I am about Luthor or Edge or Superman parts of the story. The family dynamics are sooo good. I love the twins and their relationship. I love how Lois and Clark are believable parents. Loved Lois's mom voice. The whole dynamic just makes me want a Kent/Danvers Thanksgiving even more. And just Thanksgiving, no tie in to a larger villain or one in done threat. Just have an episode of family interactions.

My one big complaint about this episode is Clark only taking Jordan to the Fortress. Like, I get that it was to "test" him again, but it was also equally about learning his heritage, and powers or not, that's Jonathan's heritage too. I think any son would rightfully feel slighted by that, and Clark should've known better, imo.

When I saw that, I immediately thought “DUDE. Rookie mistake.”’ I’m not even a parent and I know that the one left behind will feel slighted. :funny: It’s also strange to me why they never considered that Jonathan will have powers too eventually considering that they’re twins. I mean I get it from a story POV where they want to do the human (Jonathan, Lois, Jonathan son) and alien (Jor-El, Clark, Jordan) parallels but still.

THOUGHTS

  • Ah. Here we go with the on-the-nose/super stilted dialogue that hammers home what the character(s) will be struggling with for the episode/season.
  • I like his relationship with Jonathan, but Jordan by himself is going to get annoying quickly if they keep writing him like a brat.
  • Speaking of Jonathan: he went from supportive and easygoing to jealous and fed up and then back again in the span of a single episode. The actor did his best, but I wasn't feeling it. I hope they won't make a habit of rushing through conflict (or the setup of it) like that.
  • Lois is the only one in the family with her **** all the way together and I love it. Clark is honestly a pretty lackluster father for the most part, but I don't have a problem with that on its face. Watching him grow as a parent and become as competent as his wife in understanding, empathizing with, and effectively parenting his sons will make for a very be a very compelling journey if written properly.
  • Speaking of Lois: I liked Tulloch in this more than I ever have. Both she and the writing were much stronger compared to the Pilot.
  • Interestingly enough, the Superman stuff was probably the least interesting part of the episode.
Another good episode. I hope they can keep it up. :)

Well, having predicted the Martian Manhunter reveal in Supergirl back in the day, I'm gonna make a prediction about this show too. Jordan and Jonathan will have a Wonder Twins dynamic to them. Jonathan is probably the trigger that makes Jordan's power manifest. :word:

Might even go a Superboy Red and Superboy Blue route, If Jonathan manifests power, they might maybe give him electric Superman abilities.

These two episodes are some of the best DC content we’ve gotten in the last couple years right behind Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing. We finally have a proper live action modern Superman. It only took what? 20 years?

As someone who never cared for the Reeve/Donner version or ANY live-action Superman movie for that matter, it's pretty much the first time ever for me*. :funny:

*I loved Lois & Clark, but Cain was never as effective as Superman as he was Clark.

I do love Richard Donner’s Superman so very much. It took Snyder’s near decade of misery for me to truly appreciate it. I haven’t seen Lois and Clark or Smallville so I can’t comment on those

I want to see Superman feature more, and not just to fight the Stranger or whichever foe is wreaking havoc. I want him saving kittens in trees and doing other heroics.

Also I would've preferred they were in Metropolis so Superman could be set in a big city. At the moment this is starting to feel like Smallville 2.0, especially with the teen angst in the background.

And I'd like more from other Arrowverse characters, particularly Kara. I want to see a continuation of it rather than feeling like it's starting from scratch again.

- I love the descriptions of the sons on wiki. :hehe:

Johnathan: The modest and kind-hearted son of Clark and Lois.

Jordan: The intelligent son of Clark and Lois, who has social anxiety and enjoys playing video games alone.

- Martha lived on that farm on her own, right? Those melt pipes were up there for how long? I am surprised that isn't how she died.

- I just realized Lana doesn't know Clark is Superman and this does not compute for me. :funny:

- Jor-El is not Jordan, no matter how hard you try to fudge it Clark. :o

- Jor-El is Italian?

- Clark and Lois really didn't expect some resentment from their other son? I mean, come on.

- They are trying to give you that Injustice/Red Son vibe with Captain Luthor. But we all know he is talking about socialism.

- It's good that they are getting a jump on JJ's Superman, with all that lens flair in the Fortress.

- Between Captain Luthor's discount Zod theme, their fight scene, and the crashing ship to Metropolis, there were a lot of MoS references in this one.

- Jordan's just... bad code. :o (That one is for our Snow Queen)

- Clark's eyebrows about Jordan kissing a girl, is a top 10 live action Superman moment for me. :lmao:

- Between her reporting and smacking her three boys into shape, this is peak Lois. :atp:

- This must be weird for most people who haven't actually experienced Lois as well, Lois. :funny:

- The love triangle involving the boys is going to be torture. But I am sure I am going enjoy it. I am such a teen sometimes. :hehe:

- Lana might be an acholic, and considering her husband, I can't tell if this happened before or after she met him.

- My brother, who I had not told about the minority casting situation, just brought up Clark and his boys are dealing with black people as the villains and now he is side eyeing everything. :funny:

- Lois and Clark being great heroes, even better parents.

- Lois' new boss/fan is basically me, and I am here for this.

- I am so over black suit Superman.

I really like this show.

J-eff :o Could be worse, could be named after that Robin Hood guy :o

When others ask on why Clark isn't as good as Lois when it comes to being a parent, I quickly remind them that this is technically the same guy that left Kara's upbringing with another family. :o

A solid follow up. I enjoyed it. Getting more used to Tyler as superman despite his skinny neck! (yes sad I know, but it bugs me!) Still not crazy on tulloch as lois yet. Lacks any real personality for me yet, but that might be how she has been written so far. The sons are fine and I can see why they have decided to go that route. For a tv series you need good supporting characters. I'm kinder missing the dynamic of living in metropolis though. Nice as it looks on the farm, its a bit dull for me. The action is good when it happens, but like somebody else has pointed out. Superman is like the action guy, just shows up when there is a fight to have then gone. But I guess because now clark/ superman are played as the same , you dont need many scenes with superman in it for his personality!

I feel that Superman flying around Smallville and these other locations and not Metropolis is a bit like Spider-Man not swinging around New York in Homecoming or Far From Home.

Maybe the reason Superman doesn't show up much is for budgetary reasons. But they could still have him around not necessarily in fighting or flying scenes but just being out and about amongst the people. Maybe appearing at some event where he's given the key to the city or something similar. It's the mere appearance of him in costume that is good to see, and doing some character-driven scenes. Otherwise he's like the Incredible Hulk in the 70s series who just shows up, flexes a bit and smashes a few things but then leaves.

Even Supergirl seemed to spend more time in costume on her show.

There could also be Covid issues as to why he's not at events, flying around and making appearances as Superman.

Does Covid even exist in the Arrowverse or within this show? If that were the case that barbecue would have them all in masks and also at that town hall meeting where Lois was questioning Morgan Edge.
