Season 1, Episode 2: "Heritage" (SPOILERS)

I know there is still plenty of teen angst to come, but they have handled the genuine moments of family drama in this show really well so far and I can definitely tell the Kent brohters do actually care for one another which is a nice touch IMO instead of them always feeling like they hate eachother.

Well, teen angst is practically what the WB now called The CW, was built on , so it kinda comes with the terriorty with most of their shows . Though , in this episode it at least made sense in the context of what the Kent Brothers are going through.

I do fear that Sarah will become Lana from the OG Smallville, and a version of Flash season 1 Iris , in terms of the love triangle stuff, but hopefully, she'll be more than just a love interest, and we'll see her as a fully developed character and see where she's coming from .

So I just watched the extended version. Not a lot of new stuff I noticed (having only seen the broadcast cut once) - a couple extra Jordan/Jon moments; slightly longer town meeting scene I think; the scene from the trailer with Clark and Lana at the cookout where she basically gives him some advice about helping his family feel at home here; the most interesting addition being a scene with Clark and General Lane right after Clark defeats the Lex drone, where Lane admits to him that "the Stranger" was after Kryptonite he'd been stockpiling at these various locations without Clark's knowledge, and Clark's p***ed. Clark also tells Lois about this at the beginning of their porch scene at the end. That's about it, I think.

Slight downgrade from the premiere but still pretty good. Strongest points continue to be Lois and Clark/Superman. Still don’t really care for their sons, but at least Jordan was more tolerable this episode

I thought this was even better than the Pilot, in the pilot the Superman-Stranger stuff felt like an after thought but not here. Plus the Superman action scenes were top notch this week.

I really enjoyed Lois arc and Morgan Edge is a complete c u next Tuesday.

The Fortress was an interesting choice, reminded more of STAS where it’s something he constructed himself and just out the database there. I found Jor El slightly jarring at first but then I kind of liked how cold he was.

That ending was brilliant, I as actually happy to see the Elseworlds suit. I think we’ll see it again but only briefly which is probably why they didn’t make another suit.

Will be doing a Vidcast review later today.

So a question for everyone, what do you think is gonna happen with Sam Lane? Think he’s gonna be torn on turning on Superman?

Overall, tonight's episode was great. After following Clark's POV from last week's pilot, I loved how this episode placed the spotlight on Lois.

And can we get more scenes between Clark/Superman and General Lane? Now those are type of scenes that I wish we could have gotten with Henry's version in the DCEU. Plus, General Lane does bring up a good point. I don't think enough credit has been given to Lois and the stress that she's had to endure in keeping her family together without losing her cool.

Regarding Jordan's behavior, I just hope that the producers have a well thought out arc for his character development and that they're not using his anxiety disorder as an excuse to make him stir the pot. I remember on how I once couldn't tolerate Thea Queen's attitude before she her personality had matured.

I think he'll become more torn as it goes on (I think the significance of "7734" will come into play on this world somehow and sway him a bit), but will ultimately land on the side of his family.

Seeing the evil Superman of Captain Luthor's Earth just makes me further upset that he wasn't portrayed as the evil dictator of Earth X. He would have made more sense than having Oliver as their "Fuhrer".

Also, why do I get the feeling that Captain Luthor was married to his Earth's version of Lois?

That would be Earth-3 where Luthor married Lois and supervillains rule.

On another note, this marks the first time that Tyler's Superman has an actual doppelganger in the established multi-verse.

Nice catch. No more impersonations by anyone because this is the actual evil Superman.

There’s no use getting upset at what you can’t change. I have a feeling the Superman of Capt Luthor’s world has lost his Lois and gone on a tirade rather than he’s an evil dictator.

That's definitely another possibility as well.

Like @Frodo, I enjoyed this episode even more than last week's. The cast, notably series regulars like Hoechlin, Tulloch and Valdez, continue to impress. And what's arguably just as impressive is the writing that gives nearly everyone a chance to shine. Clark has his responsibilities as Superman; Lois, as a journalist, is still very much in her element despite some obvious setbacks; the boys continue to struggle w/ their own respective issues—and through it all, the family dynamics remain front and center.

As someone who was initially worried that Captain Luthor might turn out to be another generic/uninspired villain, I was happy to see that he's nothing of the kind. Can't wait to learn more about him, especially as relates to how and why Superman went rogue in his world. And while on the subject of villains, it looks like Lois will have her hands full with Morgan Edge. What's more, her new gig at the Smallville Gazette tells me we're likely in store for a stripped-down, bare-bones approach to the character, the like of which we've never seen before (outside of the comics, that is.) Chriqui's Lana, on the other hand, needs better material. I don't know what's happening there.

My one big complaint about this episode is Clark only taking Jordan to the Fortress. Like, I get that it was to "test" him again, but it was also equally about learning his heritage, and powers or not, that's Jonathan's heritage too. I think any son would rightfully feel slighted by that, and Clark should've known better, imo.

On another note, is anyone else here not digging the FOS's new design?

Although the quality of the visuals were impressive, the overall design is still somewhat simple. I was kind of expecting the Fortress to have more than just a frozen console inside of it, especially for a Superman that's been active for nearly 20 years.

Personally, I thought that the set design used for the FOS in "Krypton" was perfect.

Yeah I think that was to create the divide, I get the feeling it’ll come up at some point and he’ll realise he didn’t quite approach it right. I guess it’s a part of been a Dad you don’t always make the right call. Trust me I know haha.

I missed the statues tbh but I liked it a lot better than that plasticky looking thing that’s been on Supergirl the last few seasons. Plus it does kind of remind me of the STAS cave so I was ok with it. Plus it fits with the tone the show is going for where it’s not too over designed like Clark has been there on weekends doing some architect work lol

I think the CGI portion of SG’s fortress looked great, it was the actual set portion that looked cheesy. But I LOVED Jor-El and Lara as ice sculptures on that show and wish they would’ve incorporated that here. This one doesn’t look like a fortress Clark has spent much time in at all. Which is why I will hang on to that (futile) hope that there are other “rooms” we haven’t seen yet lol.

Yeah, found that a bit weird too.

Other than that, a great episode, liked it a bit more than the pilot.
The cast is super strong and works well together.
The writing doesnt stumble too much, things move and are really interesting.

One thing people have to get used to or give up on the show, is the family focus, that the sons will continue to play a big role.
Its the focus of the whole show, and if that is something that bothers people, they need to drop the show.
Personally i already got used to it, so its not a big deal.

I think Clark saw it as an opportunity to mend his relationship with Jordan, and also to make him feel more wanted if that makes any sense. In other words, he felt that some alone time could do them both a world of good. Jonathan, on the other hand, doesn't really need that kind of validation from him at this point. He's more self-secure.

Having said that, for all of the reasons you mentioned, he definitely needs to take him there as well in the very near future.

Yeah I think that’s more my issue, doesn’t look like somewhere he’d go just to be. I mean I can’t imagine him & Lois have spent much time there if she has to be wearing layers upon layers to stay warm lol

Hopefully there is, maybe a kitchen and a bathroom aswell as two bedrooms haha

That thought crossed my mine too. I didn't think it was a great look for Clark in that respect

Really enjoyed the episode. I think the Pilot did more for me as a Superman fan though. But I'm honestly excited to see the next episode, which is something I really haven't felt in quite some time with the DC/CW shows.
