Black Widow at the Box Office!

Is this movie going to be released in China?

We really don't know. Apparently the reason why it didn't release there this month is that it's the 100th anniversary of the ruling communist party and theaters are all showing propaganda films. There's still a chance it'll come out some time during the next couple of months but China is one of those countries where piracy can really be a problem so even if it finally releases there it might not do a lot of business theatrically.

The bottom line of this weekend, the real takeaway is that the world has NOT returned to normal.
Using all Positivity and, assuming that we get there,
"Normal" may look entirely different by the time that we do.
And that might mean permanent changes to Box Office as we know it, AT THE VERY LEAST!

Without any foreknowledge, I am going to guess that Black Widow will debut in China, eventually.

Thats if Disney still has good relationships with China. The director of Eternalscriticized China and I'm not even sure if China would let Eternals open there.

If we go by quality then yeah, BW should be doing better than F9. Outside of action scenes that movie was pure garbage (even by F&F's standards).
Always good to know that my continuous decision to avoid F&F at theaters is very much JUSTIFIED!

I saw a few of them; which says more about how much I love to go see movies than it does to my attachment to the franchise.

the Disney + PA cost about the same as two theater tickets. without snack bar. I doubt they would do this for a new Avengers movie, but it is cheaper.

It's gonna take a while before things are really back to normal. Even when I went to see BW in theaters, I felt uneasy being there, especially with the new variant Delta going around. It was soooo packed in that Dolby theater and no social distancing seats. I think I'll probably stay home for Shang Chi and do premier access.(that's if things aren't looking better by then).

Hopefully things can get back to normal bout time Spider-man No Way Home comes out.

At this time, Shang Chi is theatrical only. Don’t think that will change unless things get worse drastically.

Yeah, I don't see Shang Chi getting premiere access - especially after Black Widow seemingly disappointed. Just go to a matinee during the week, it'll be much less crowded.

Black Widow is still doing better than F9 week over week, and F9 is theatrical only.

"Worst drop ever for an MCU movie" means diddly squat given that no other movie had to contend with COVID, numerous delays and a dead title character.

But sure, consumer choice bad right?
What The F& F franchise has done is impressive, for what those movies are.
But, the F&F films have never had the appeal of the MCU.

How did BW do worldwide in week 2.?
Is the film approaching 300 million?

Movie theaters salty as hell right now.
I mean... these theaters barely earned anything last year unless you live in China or other parts of the movie that didn't close theaters. I don't know what to say, maybe try to be more considerated? They aren't forcing people to go back to the cinemas. A movie like Black Widow was originally made for theaters anyway. It was never meant to be a straight for streaming movie. They aren't going to be happy at all, when these big movies are debuting in streaming sites right away.

Then when they close down for good, people suddenly feel sorry for them.

I hope this legs out fine and the next two movies will do well (though based on little known characters so there is a risk) if not specular. If all three in a row just do so-so in profit terms, or worse, I think chatters will begin and Disney will think twice green lighting MCU movies with over $100m budget. The loss is those of us who want to see more of them.

For the amount of money they charge for a ticket and concessions, it’s hard for me to feel sorry for them. This is coming from someone who used to work at one.
Would you be happy if they just all close down and studios just release their movies straight to streaming?

Because if that was so easy, these studios wouldn't even bother screening their movies at these movie theaters, the moment they opened their streaming apps (D+, HBO Max, Peacock, etc.).

You could argue that movie tickets are eXpensive, but big action movies especially MCU we have today wouldn't have been possible if the previous Mcu movies weren't successful at the theaters.

Black Widow’s drop this past weekend is nothing compared to her drop in Endgame.

I would be happy if the theaters made the ticket and concession prices worth it. At my local Regal, nothing has changed to make the experience worth the price raises. The seats, the decor, everything has been the same for the last 15 years despite the price increase.
