Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

I’ve never played Destiny downloading it right now to check it out hopefully it’s not too confusing the gameplay vids I saw were interesting

Good luck! Only bummer is I've heard it pretty confusing to jump into so far into the game, because there have been so many seasons.

If you find yourself lost, I recommend this video. Byf is probably the biggest Destiny lore expert around so a good resource to catch up with.

I don’t like this acquisition game and if this was a reactionary move to Activision Sony should have gone for Ubisoft Or EA

I'm pretty sure Sony couldn't afford either, not realistically. Note that even Microsoft probably could only afford Activision because Activision's array of recent scandals drove their stock price into the toilet ( something like half of what it was a few years ago ). And Microsoft is a much bigger company than Sony. To say nothing of it being dependent on Ubisoft or EA being interested in selling; while hostile takeovers are possible they are a *lot* more expensive.

( Note that "has a larger cash supply than the target's market cap" is *not* the same thing as "can afford". Its usually a really bad idea to empty out your reserves and max out your credit to acquire one company, you need that margin for other things, too. )

Destiny was actually the first game I bought when I got a PS4 (not counting the GTA V and TLOU Remastered that came with the system) and I just couldn't get into it. I'd actually forgotten about it until this Bungie news broke.

Bungie make a big song and dance about wanting to be independent and every time they get it they commit themselves again lol. I think in terms of shooter tech and expertise sharing this is a good move for Sony. It's certainly an overpriced deal and the manpower and IPs don't justify the price, but Sony really need employees who are great in this area and I think it will pay off with their other studios also seeing the benefits of this expertise. There was also a real danger of Microsoft buying Bungie (Destiny is Phil Spencer's favourite game :D ) and that would really have cornered the FPS market on IP, tech and knowledge.

They're probably just trying to diversify their offering. Third person narrative-focused action games are very well covered and all these recent moves are likely intended to appeal to the people who they feel are less secure in their ecosystem. I think they will still continue to do what they traditionally do well very well, and this will come on top. Their existing studios are expanding while they have got 7 new studios in the last year so overall capacity has increased and it won't be an either/or situation going forward.

This is should be interesting seems like Sony is trying to go for a new Revenue stream
Yeah, if a live service game happens to succeed it can give great continuous revenue over a long time and once successful the relative dev costs flatten out. The single player games have been great and will continue to be great but as the scale rises, the risk magnifies along with the rising budgets. Sony have been on a run of continuous success but one misstep can be much more costly for a big franchise (like Mass Effect and Cyberpunk has shown) when it is dependant on starting again with sequels and renewed risk every time unlike live service platforms which can even recover from terrible launches and being written off (Sea of Thieves, Fallout 76, Halo MCC Collection). Also how a company can get sold for $3.6B when they have just 1 IP. I think the idea is that this regular revenue will support the single player stuff long term and reduce the overall risk of their model.

I'm anti-excited.

If you're playing one GaaS time/money sink there's less time/money for anything else.

They can't all succeed.
It's why I quit playing WoW and have not ever bothered with anything else like it since. You can invest all your time in one game, never actually finishing it or you can play several games and get some variety in your life.

The Verge - Sony is still struggling with PS5 supply
The PS4 had sold more at this point

Sony drops PlayStation 5 sales forecast again due to chip shortage | Engadget
It's well behind where the PS4 was at the same stage.

All the resellers that jack up the prices aren't helping either.

I feel like this is somewhat misblaming the matter, is the thing. The PS5 should have been expected to miss hitting the same levels as the PS4 in the first place, because this time around Sony has actual non-hobbled competition. The PS4 was going against Nintendo's Wii U debacle, and Microsoft's "always on Kinect DRM" marketing failure, both of which were to Sony's advantage. This time around, by contrast, Nintendo has the Switch and its massive success, and Microsoft is lean and mean between Game Pass and a greatly expanded studio presence. Even absent any action by Sony, they simply aren't benefiting from as friendly a market environment.

Well that is ridiculously stupid. A live service game is a time sink, by design, and a player only has so many hours of game time in a week. Releasing that many GAASes, there is no way they can possibly keep from competing with themselves. . . and that's before taking into account the inherent advantage possessed by all the GAASes that are *already* on the market. Or, if you want to make a Destiny clone, you need a compelling reason why a player should play it rather than Destiny. . . and Destiny has years of refinement and content, that you won't and can't have.

Is Sony trying to single handedly reenact the MMO bubble?

I would take it down to maybe 4, and have them be different genres. I assume those 10 are going to be mostly first-person and third-person shooters which the market is already saturated in outside of Sony. So too many GaaS, and probably too many of the same genre.

I agree totally, but I think they are using the term GAAS more widely than we're used to - in the way that Forza Horizon and Halo Infinite have elements of that while also still having elements of traditional non GAAS games. So not just pure MMOs, I expect they are including the likes of Gran Turismo even though the difference from the regular GT model isn't going to be night and day. You can take part in the GAAS element of the current Forza and Halo without logging in every day for eg. You can take a break till the next content drop (in the way we used to wait for DLCs and still enjoy them).

Yeah, I don't think 10 live service games is actually that drastic. It doesn't have to mean intensive, check in every day type games. Just games that are regularly updated, with rotating weekly content.

I mean technically something like Sea of Thieves or Fall Guys are live service, and those games are chill AF.

Considering Sony has such a strong stable of singe player games already, I don't think 10 live service games is that ambitious, especially when you break them down into genres. Probably only a couple shooters, maybe some racing games, open world type games, family games etc. They'll just be wanting to cover their bases.

I suppose, *if* it turns out that they mostly just mean "games with an online element and a plan for regular updates", as opposed to a full out Destiny clone GAAS.

Ahh Thanks for the vid I was completely lost I think I started the campaign. It seems really fun so far.. It’s cool how you can summon your bike and ride anywhere. I can totally see Sony using Bungies Engine as a blueprint for Sony FPS. I really hope they can bring back some of their FPS like Killzone and Resistance or even make a modern FPS I.e COD or Battlefield or just revive SOCOM and turn it into an FPS

Sony mise sur Montréal pour déjouer Microsoft

Interview with Jade Raymond regarding her new studio funded by Sony. Essentially, they're currently working on an "evolving and persistent" online game. Sony even asked them to submit three game projects and they would pick the best one but they've decided to work only on one in the end.

If they're successful, I won't be surprised if they get bought by Sony down the road.

Adapting ahead of regulation: a principled approach to app stores - Microsoft On the Issues

To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision. And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love. We are also interested in taking similar steps to support Nintendo’s successful platform. We believe this is the right thing for the industry, for gamers and for our business.

This honestly doesn't surprise me. I don't think Microsoft needs blanket exclusivity to get value from that acquisition. As long as those games are still free at launch on Game Pass, they've got plenty of valuable incentive to drive people to the service.

This would probably work out well for the most people if they did it like this.
