Discussion: Abortion II

Honestly as an outsider from the UK this is just wild. People losing rights, endangering women and people are celebrating because it'll make a big man in the sky happy. I don't get it.
Welcome to the team sport of American politics. It's gross, embarrassing, and harmful in everyway.

The United States overall peaked as a country after World War II for two or two and half decades (boom period with government spending during and after the war and progressive Supreme Court decisions and laws) and has been sliding down ever since despite some gains in rights that are now being reversed and eviscerated.

Careful....big brother is watching. So, Kavanaugh lied to the senate and to Collin's face about RvW. Anyone think he was telling the truth about not raping and sexually assaulting women now?
I think everyone knew he was assaulting women but the right obviously and literally just said they do not care about women's rights.

This may be a conservative "win" right now, but that may not be the case in November. Republicans can and SHOULD be punished at the polls for this.

And this makes me angrier at the folks WHO DID NOT VOTE BLUE in 2016. This is what you got because "but her emails" or "why should I vote for Hillary?"
Too bad the blue wave probably isn't going to happen. I have no faith in people doing the right thing anymore. :(

Unfortunately, you are PROBABLY right. This, however, is an issue that MAY help in the mid-terms. If so, this can be fixed legislatively. I just want to be clear that I am generally speaking from a political strategy perspective. I have no faith in "bipartisan" efforts because republicans (in particular) are COMPLETELY partisan and will only do something if it benefits them politically and don't give a hot one in hell about working class people. Period.

It’s so bizarre to look in on this from a secular, grown up nation.

This isn't going to be something that's going away in the next few news cycles. Republicans and the conservative activist SCOTUS took a baseball bat to a hornet's nest of voters. And women will NOT forget that.

If Rs don't pay the price in November, then nothing will.

I just want to pop into this thread to send out hearts and extra hugs to anyone who needs them on this awful day.

Now where are all the folks who were all 'Hey, I like this Liz Cheney gal. She's fighting for democracy' in light of her reaction to the ruling?

Not anyone here in particular. Just that, with her being on the January 6 committee, she's gotten this wave of backing from folks on the left, and I have to wonder if they'd still consider her worth having in light of her thoughts here.

I'm glad she's losing her seat. Talk about not reading the room correctly.

Not from this left. I have always said she is playing the republican long term game. She recognizes that economic health (for the rich) depends on a "free" labor pool to exploit. She certainly doesn't want an autocratic political bureaucracy because, long term, it's not good for economic "health" and growth; autocracy stunts it.

The rightwing SCOTUS didn't need Trump to win to continue to set themselves up as the most powerful branch of government, even though at least Thomas and Alito wanted that to happen.

Cheney has a straight white male supremacist voting record.
She likes the system as is. The republican party is biased for the rich and, along with those wealthy people who pump money into the political process, supported by the stupid and ignorant. If the dems win here and there, it's no big deal because the fundamentals of the system remain the same. Now, IF the republican party were to shrink more than it already has, it would become a danger to the economic structure as it exists because the political debate would become more of a discussion between the Sanders wing of the dems and the "centrists" LOL. That's a debate corporate america does not want. Cheney is trying to hold on to more of the center of the american electorate and recognizes that Trump is good for primaries, but not so much for general elections. If Trump only consolidates the far right crazies and loses the middle (as happened in 2018 and 2020), the republican party loses influence.
