Just got back from the movie!

I had a great time and loved it for the most part BUT that mega destruction finale did get a little bit boring towards the end. Ive seen so much of that in these movies. I feel like they need to come up with different ways to thrill or else its gonna bring the genre down.

I really loved the overall change in tone and the more epic global feel it had. There were several really emotional scenes, lots of humor, excellent character interaction. It felt like a true work of artistic/dramatic cinema that happened to be about super heroes as opposed to a summer popcorn movie.

I think my favorite single sequence was Hulkbuster vs Hulk. It really was an incredible action set piece.

If i was to describe AOU simply, Id put it this way:

Avengers 1 was like a great burger, fries and shake. AOU is like going to a upscale restaraunt and getting a filet mignon and a fine vintage wine.

ULTRON: Definitely not your typical villain. That was such an interesting, layered, thoughtful character. He's super smart, super disturbed and often acts like a moody teenager except hes an AI trying to destroy the world. Loved how James Spader played him.

VISION: Paul Bettany made him such a special soul amongst The Avengers. Perfect.

Theres so much I need to think about on this. Im gonna write a full review and Ill post a link soon.

Final score: 8.5/10
I'm really glad you enjoyed the Vision :oldrazz:

Agree 100%. I am officially done with destruction porn.

MoS and AoU have soured me on comic book movies in general.

Adding all the scenes of people being rescued didn't really help either. They need to stop going bigger and come up with more personal battles. Maybe we'll get that in IW when they fight Thanos.

I'm fine with the destruction or moving it away as long as it isn't that stupid Crapformers dialogue ("I'll KILL you!!!" Really??? I suppose it's easy to translate....). I thought there was a LOT going on inside the heads of virtually everyone and the use of SW was done really well. A definite MUST see again for me.

I saw it a second time and it's much better. Once you watch the filming knowing what the film is instead of watching it while thinking about what you expect it to be the problems fade away. It's a fun movie if you let it. The only disappointment is they didn't show the BVS, SW, or JW trailers. Not even Terminator or FF. If you had problems with the film and you can see it again I would recommend it.

I got all those trailers but the Star Wars one.

Can't wait to see it again! Loved reading your review vision. I agree about vision can't wait to see him in the future, I would have liked to see a bit more of an explanation of his powers and him using them more.

Yes! That is exactly what is missing from team superhero movies.

Star Wars mastered the art of simultaneous battles. In both ROTJ and TPM you had a space battle, land battle, lightsaber duel, and a group on a special mission.

DOFP kind of had the right direction with Mystique's decision contrasted with the future battle.

The Star Wars model is definitely the way I would like to see IW go.

The problem is that no one hero can defeat Thanos.

They can go the FF4: Rise of the Silver Surfer route and give one hero all their powers :o

They need to all fight him at once, out in space. No earth buildings, just smashing and lasers and rocks and space.

If the script, acting, directing is good, it won't matter that much. If you hate earth battles, then you'll hate a bunch of movies. I just can't stand poor scripts. Rooting for Ant-Man and guess it will mainly be earthbound. After that comes the drought until CW.

Did any of y'all get a star wars trailer in front of AOU?

It's very interesting how divided the reception to Spader's Ultron is and I'm right down the middle. I've been trying to figure out what it is that was bothering me about the performance and I think it comes down to the fact that we were watching a scary looking robot deliver these quippy lines that...just felt awkward in some scenes. I think because he LOOKED menacing, and he had an imposing voice and then would say stuff like "I can't physically throw up in my mouth" it just felt very jarring to me. However, I think at the end of the day that was entirely intentional on Whedon's part. This was never supposed to be the T-1000 of the MCU, but basically evil Tony Stark in robot form.

I'll need some more time to get used to it.

P.S. Also, did anyone else notice that the robotic filter for Spader's voice seemed to phase in and out?

After seeing the movie I can tell you that ULTRON wasnt supposed to be scary. He just wasnt at all. I dont believe thats what Joss wanted him to be. He was an AI/robot with an agenda to destroy humanity to create peace. That doesnt equate to anything very scary as a character. I loved it though. I took him for what he was, a twisted, deranged AI with humor, eccentricities and a God complex. James Spader made him seem likable in a lot of ways as opposed to just a hateful, evil creep.

I liked the counterpoint. I liked the way
Ultron evolved
and thought that interesting. I'll have to see it again, but think there's some other interesting Ultron stuff (esp towards the end of the movie). I'm not 100% sure so I'll leave that til later, but think Ultron developed a certain jealousy of human beings. We've all seen the clips and so forth. If he didn't develop this emotion, why would he have his mouth move to shape words? This definitely falls in the realm of speculation, but, to me, it's interesting speculation.

Loved the movie. Right now, it's up there with GotG and TA (these were rather novel movies and that's probably part of the reason I liked them so much; though they were very good movies also).

Yeah he was unique which is why it upset me he had not enough screen time. This was our Ultron for the MCU and I wish we had spent a little more time with him.

Leaving for the theater in like 10 minutes! So hyped!

Hopefully my theater doesn't screw me over again.... We'll just have to wait and see what happens

Imo a cold calculating moraless machine Hell bent on killing humanity is scary. That's what makes Skynet so unnerving. Even without any discernible independent personality Skynet is pretty terrifying when you stop and think about how it doesn't care about morals or your pleas for mercy. It has a goal and it's going to kill whoever and do whatever to accomplish it.

I think what's bothering me about Ultron is that he sounds like an ordinary guy. If he sounded a bit less human with some robotic qualities in his voice or behaved more like a T-1000 he would have been scary as **** imo, but if that's not what Whedon wanted then it's not necessarily wrong just not what I had hoped for. I can't wait to listen to the audio commentary. Regardless of what sort of problems I may end up having with this film or the choices Whedon made Im going to enjoy listening to him discuss the film and explain his choices. I hope he talks about the design process of Ultron.

Just to confirm, there is no post-credits scene. Just a mid-credits scene, correct?

I think that about sums it up for me too. The trailers kind of indicated that we were going to get an Ultron more like the cartoon EMH version but the end product was a little bit more eccentric and quippy than the version I wanted in my head.

It's different when you go through the movie. Spader's voice is anything but ordinary and I think you'll change your attitude as you progress through the movie (maybe not, but I thought it really well done and a lot to feed on....even more than breakfast). Don't make pre-judgements without seeing the movie. The trailers, clips, opinions, etc. don't really mean anything without seeing the whole. Keep that in mind.
