Post-apocalyptic action survival game set for a sequel?
TLoU2-LinkedIn-Profile.jpg

The Last of Us 2 is in development, according to the LinkedIn profile of former Naughty Dog lead character artist Michael Knowland.
Knowland, who worked at Naughty Dog from October 2011 to April 2014 (and is now at Just Cause 3 developer Avalanche Studios in New York), lists the following work for his time at the Uncharted studio:

  • The Last of Us – all things main and NPC characters.
  • Uncharted 4 – working on main character Nathan Drake to upgrade the face sculpt, hair (geometry/texturing/shading), facial hair, rigging topology, skin textures and arm/hand details.
  • The Last of Us 2 – 1 month prototyping head sculpts.
Where The Last of Us 2 is listed, his profile used to list “Unannounced AAA Game.”
The LinkedIn profile of Frank Tzeng, the current lead character arist at Naughty Dog, mentions him working on both Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, as well as an “unannounced AAA game title.” He’s been working on both of these titles since April, when Knowland left.
Thanks,

I'm gonna be so excited if/when this is officially announced...

I hope the sequel has new characters. They would really have to up the ante with Ellie and Joel, to differentiate the games and not make it feel like the first one, but I think with new characters you have a bigger platform for creative purposes.

I think it should be a new cast of characters. Didn't they essentially end the story for Ellie and Joel?

Whatever they do, I will be super excited for it.

Thank goodness we didn't have to escort a dog around too, there was enough going on with Ellie.

I think that could've been cool. Ellie was never an annoyance.

Well she was when you're playing on hard and she does something stupid during stealth missions.

Like what? She's never detected when you're using stealth. The enemies just go through her like she's not there.

Not when going through water. I would duck through the water quietly and Ellie would run through it splashing and alerting enemies. She would also sometimes glitch stuck onto items not letting you progress.

Never ran into those. She was never a hindrance when playing.

The heart and soul of The Last of Us is Joel and Ellie. Their story is hardly done. Not only could they explore what their lives are like trying to live normally in the new town (and all the drama that could unfold there) but they also have the massive weight of Joel's lie to contend with. How does he handle that guilt? Does Ellie know? How would she handle the truth? The Last of Us is the beginning of their relationship, and like all relationships, there is an end...there is a lot more to tell.

I'd be totally cool with introducing new characters, but the Last of Us 2 needs to remain centered on Joel and Ellie. Otherwise, it'd be a pale imitation of the first game.

I think it would be interesting if they explored the nature of the pandemic more. I could see the military come after Ellie

They could also do more open world stuff.

That could be pretty interesting. Instead of trying to get TO the fireflies, they could be running from them. Having the fireflies come and totally wreck the sanctuary for revenge/looking for Ellie at the start of the game could be great. I'm not sure how I feel about an open world...it tends to be hard to marry open world gameplay with a stories as tight and cinematic as Naughty Dog does. I would certainly be down with each level/area being larger and a little less linear, though.

Neil Druckman wrote an epilogue scene that was performed live by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson on stage that was basically done as a way for for the staff to say goodbye to the characters. To me, it seems like the staff emotionally moved away from the characters and gave them an "ending."

I'm aware of that, but it was hardly an "ending" that completely negates the potential for further stories. More of a bonus scene for the fans. It would be asinine to look at it as anything more than that.

Well, I don't know about complete open world, but large areas where you can explore and return to. Drive vehicles, ride horses, etc.

But how does that bring anything new to the series? Seems like you're just continuing the story with no true purpose, just extending its welcome.

I loved this game as much as the next guy, but I'd love if they focus on an amazing new IP rather than doing more of what we already had.

The last of us was brilliant but I still rank Lee and Clementine relationship as the best surrogate father and daughter in zombie apocalypse relationship. Still looking forwatd to a part 2 and hopefully they can expand.

My hopes for a sequel...

- an older Ellie, with her as the main protaganist
- somehow for there to be news of what's going on worldwide. The UK was hinted at in the first one but I would love to know more.
- Ellie to learn how to swim!
- I love the dog idea. Or maybe a kitty? We've seen dogs in apocalypse games before
- more riding missions
-occasionally more fossicking for food.mthst would be great for using the bow more often which I was always dying to do

the question is, will they expand upon joel and ellie's adventures,

or will they go the gta route and do a story with brand new characters

edit: already been said several times in this thread.

The staff said they emotionally said goodbye to Ellie and Joel. It will be new characters.

It would be interesting for them to have new characters but if they do I hope Ellie and joel pop up somewhere in the game anyway even if they aren't playable.

it's too bad i'm just not interested in zombie games. i know the last of us is considered one of if not the greatest game of all times, but it's essentially a zombie stealth game, and i'm not really interested in either of those genres.

I'd love just watching someone play it though. OR if there was a coop mode...

That would've been a selling point for me with tlour. If it featured a split screen coop mode, I would've gotten it for sure. Skipped out on it on the Ps3 anyways.

Ive never liked zombie games at all, but that's not what last of us is about at all. The humans are way more frightening and unpredictable than the zombies, and the story is unequivocally the best video game story I've ever played. Maybe one of my favorite all time stories in any medium. Dont skip it just because you're not into zombie games because this one transcends the genre, using it as a platform for its setting and its characters circumstances.
