Far From Home What would you like to see improved upon?

A little more cheeky witt and a little less naivety.

Spider-man in Infinity War had moments of being abit too naive when it came to the humor around him and the pop culture jokes being a spider-man thing doesn't really do it for me personally.

No A.I. suit or relying on Stark in general. I even have gripes with

Peter falling into Tony's arms in Infinity War before he dies, as amazing as Holland acted it out. People are constantly saying he looks like a "child looking to their parent", which is coincidentally the reason I don't like it.

I just hate how tethered he is to Tony now. I don't think he could ever be an independent character anymore at this point, they're just too close.

Oh God, I thought I was the ONLY one who didn't care for that scene....and it is all because of Tony Stark...(though it does make me wonder how they'll connect the next Spidey film to Tony Stark in a way. While Stark was barely in Homecoming, it definitely revolved around his influence)

I will also second more wit over naivety when talking to his baddies. ALSO have the baddies talk back, (i.e. more than saying "shut up"). Spidey's quips play well when he's responding to something the villain just said.

As cool as the action scenes in Homecoming were, the stakes never felt high. Hopefully that improves in the next film.

Also, I don't want this series to be "Spider-Man and the Guest Star of the Week", so I hope whichever superhero is featured in this film gets minimal screentime.

Less humour, or more humour that is actually funny, spidey homecoming got a lot of that wrong.

- Actually include good swinging scenes and action
- Acknowledge the existence of Uncle Ben
- Get rid of Karen and anything at all resembling Iron Man tech
- Introduce a real Mary Jane Watson
- Don't even mention Tony Stark. Biggest problem with the first movie. I want a Spider-Man movie. Not Iron Man 4.
- Give Peter some adderall to calm down

Hc was nothing like an ironman 4

Since I'll be seeing the sequel:

-Absolutely little-to-no bumbling, incompetent or laughing-stock Spider-Man.

We get he's a kid, we get he's inexperienced compared to the other heroes, and we already had three films now that have told us again-and-again that he's so young and naive with his talk of "really old movies" and need of wanting to impress/be like his his pseudo father-figure. Now that we'll be heading into his sequel, it's time we get a Spider-Man that feels more like Spider-Man. Some baggage will carry over as expected (i.e. him being more Miles than Peter, Stark Suit, being so stuck to Stark in general, etc.) but let's get back to his roots a bit.

-No AI.

Made Spider-Man feel too much like Iron Lad at points and with the forced arc of Peter realizing he's more than just a suit :-)doh:) over, there's no reason to see anymore of this foolishness.

-Web swinging is a must and a lot of it.

Got a few glimpses of it in Infinity War and we need to see more.

-Less forced humor.

I know it's the MCU and humor is gonna be prevalent but for all that is holy cut back on some of the lame dialogue. I don't need to see Peter bring up pop culture references or Ganke saying he's watching porn.

-Less Aunt Tomei and more Aunt May.

We get that Marisa Tomei is attractive and we were reminded of such almost every time she was on screen in Homecoming, but now that she knows Peter's identity, it's time she's more like the motherly figure she's meant to be as opposed to "cool big sister".

-Give us something with Uncle Ben.

Address the elephant in the room for Pete's sake (no-pun intended) and let us see more of Holland's dramatic acting chops come out. Contrary to what the MCU would have you believe, Uncle Ben is Peter's motivation and that needs to be showcased. Plus, wouldn't this flow perfectly with May knowing Peter's secret?

-Fix or scrap Michelle.

She added nothing to the film other than be annoying and serve as a mere 'easter egg' with her whole initials. I'm aware she's gonna be around for a while yet so either have her contribute to the story in a meaningful way or drop her, which leads me to..

-Mary Jane Watson.

It's been 11 years since we've last seen MJ on the big screen and that portrayal wasn't exactly great. Not sure how Marvel Studios feels about MJ in contrast to the Marvel Comics crew, but she is Peter's true love and absolutely vital to his world. Please introduce her.

-Better CGI.

Spidey looked like a video game at some points in Homecoming.

-More heart

-More focus on the duality/cause-and-effect of Peter/Spidey.

Only got glimpses of it in Homecoming and it's a vital part of his character.

-Flash Thompson that is more like Flash Thompson

That's pretty much it.

Agree with pretty much everything here! I did really enjoy Homecoming but these would drastically improve the sequel.

My biggest gripe with Homecoming is the supporting cast. As mentioned, Michelle was pointless and Flash was totally lame.

I'm excited for Gyllenhaal as Mysterio but he doesn't really lend himself to their being better action.

They relied too much on CGI and using a mo-cap suit in Homecoming for certain scenes and it showed.

 Not exactly unreasonable requests, either.

Yup. Still can't figure out why they changed Flash as drastically as they did. He's an easy character to adapt and even easier character to 'modernize'. Jocks and athletic types are still around today, so why they opted to go smart cocky science bully is beyond me.

I'm excited for Gyllenhaal as Mysterio but he doesn't really lend himself to their being better action.

Right, and that's why -- much like with Homecoming -- we could have multiple villains. I'd love a more psychological Spidey film for a change of pace but part of his appeal is the action. Here's hoping we could have Scorpion for action-based stuff.

They relied too much on CGI and using a mo-cap suit in Homecoming for certain scenes and it showed.

Did it ever, dude. Spidey looked straight out of a video game cutscene on the ferry and it took me out of the movie. Say whatever you want about ASM2 but its CGI was pretty damned good so I'd hope we'll get some better effects in the sequel (especially with Mysterio).

The emboldened parts are the biggest points that I had as issues with Homecoming.

I am aware of the references made to Uncle Ben in both CW and Homecoming however reducing Ben to just mere references is a shame. While I don't feel that this is as erroneous as downplaying the importance of Ben in favor of Peter's parents, there is still an error here and it needs to be corrected.

This ties into 'more heart' and with that they need to take a more aggressive approach to representing the duality of Peter and Spider-Man. The main problem is that they went for a lighthearted film which is not a problem in itself but I get the notion that they want to once again distance themselves from previous films--both good and bad. While some changes have benefited the character and story, some changes have not.

Which brings me to Michelle. If this was supposed to be the new Mary Jane as one of the initial writers of the movie stated, I am disgusted, quite frankly. I'll just leave it at that--I'm depressed to think that once again filmmakers have missed the mark with the wonderful character that is 616 Mary Jane.

I agree. He's the single most important character to Peter/Spider-Man and he needs to matter/exist properly.

I could argue that at least that Ben still had a place and an impact on that Peter, but as I've been getting older and find myself getting more into the classic comics as opposed to Ultimate, focusing on the parents for the sake of doing something different really lessened those films and I feel the MCU is making that same mistake with their vague references to Ben.

People will argue they don't want to see Ben get shot again or go through the WGP speech but I'm simply advocating for him to matter/have mattered.

Agreed.

An issue I have with how they presented the 'duality' in the MCU so far was that regardless of what mistake Spider-Man did, Peter still got a pass and vice-versa. The decathlon tournament, the local shop Peter visited early in the movie, the plane with Avengers equipment being destroyed, etc. The only thing that seemed to stick was the Ferry but even then it wasn't as big a fault as should've been.

Something I really want the MCU Spidey to face is guilt because thus far he hasn't and guilt is a major part of the duality. When Peter wins, Spider-Man loses. When Spider-Man wins, Peter loses. Typical Parker Luck.

Which brings me to Michelle. If this was supposed to be the new Mary Jane as one of the initial writers of the movie stated, I am disgusted, quite frankly. Yup, and all this does is push a character that nobody really asked for in favor of sidelining a character that is long overdue a return.

I just feel like they had a chance to really use Spectacular Spider-Man as inspiration but seems like they ignored it.

No origin? Yep

High school angle? Yup

Diverse high school cast? Has that

Not even just that but those are the three main things they talked about before Homecoming and well... :oldrazz:

PeterBenParker, you pretty much nailed all my gripes mate

- Remove the AI/high-tech gear.

This kills so much of what made Peter Parker/Spider-Man appealing and relatable. He's NOT Iron Man. He's NOT Black Panther. Peter should not have access to billions of dollars worth of high-tech equipment. Peter Parker is supposed to be a broke school-kid who manages to put together a few gadgets himself (web-shooters, spider-tracer, spider-signal) using his witt, science knowledge and whatever money he can put together.

- More focus and better portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Less focus on Tony Stark and The Avengers.

The Spider-Man I know and love is NOT an Avenger, nor does he care all that much to be. He's a loner, an outcast. He isn't an Iron Man fanboy who fights crime to impress Tony Stark. He dedicated his life to fighting crime out of guilt and responsibility. The only person Peter should be aiming to please by being Spider-Man is his uncle's memory. Not Tony Stark. Nobody else.

I know Peter's introduction in Civil War implied this but that was pretty much the extent of it. But then Tony Stark took over as the role model/father figure (the main reason the rubble scene in Homecoming fell flat). I'm not asking for a whole re-telling of the origin story, but more emphasis on Uncle Ben's importance and a more accurate interpretation of Peter's motivations.

And show Peter complementing the consequences of an Avengers life.

Give us THIS side of Peter.

- Less humor.

Quips here and there, absolutely. Less cheap laughs. Less of Spider-Man being bumbling baffoon.

- Better story

Homecoming's plot was paper thin and narrative non-existent. Again, watching Peter kiss up to Tony Stark for and whine about not being respected by The Avengers for 2 hours is not a compelling Peter Parker story nor is it an interesting Spider-Man story.

- The Duality

Show Peter really struggling balancing both lives. Show us his life of Spider-Man makes him depressed, angry, etc. Spidey often enjoys web-swinging and fighting crime, yes, but there is also times it's a curse to him and hurts his personal life. The typical Parker luck.

- Better CGI

It looked mostly awful in Homecoming, mainly the Ferry sequence. I thought I was watching a cut-scene for the Spider-Man PS4 game.

- The Daily Bugle

Either bring back J.K or recast, one way or the other it's time to re-introduce J.J and the Daily Bugle on film.

Flash Thompson -

He may be beyond saving. The whole mean-geek portrayal is awful. He should be a athlete, jock, bully. You can do what other Spidey movies haven't and really build his relationship with Peter over the movies to becoming best friends. Show us Flash Thompson the Spidey fanboy, war-hero, etc.

Another thing that is pretty much too damaged to be repaired is his secret identity. I absolutely hate that there is no concept of secret identity in the MCU in general. How many people already know Peter is Spider-Man after just one movie? Way too many. It was so important in the comics for Peter to protect his identity at all costs. If someone close to him ever learned he was Spider-Man that would put them and everyone he loves in harms way. That's way he protected it all costs.

I did not like Homecoming and think Spider-Man's portrayal in the MCU has been disappointing and mediocre thus far, but I've not given up hope they can fix a lot and I'm intrigued for the sequel.

More Peter being hyper intelligent
NO AI IN THE SUIT PLZ
mention of uncle ben

less Ned, Flash etc they were so annoying

I'd like them to completely ditch the AI system in the suit, but I'm not holding my breath over that.

Some of you really have to let go of the comics when considering the films.

we had 2 interpretations of uncle ben, we dont need another, we dont need it mentioned, its been done and done well enough previously.

He has a relationship with stark, that's not changing, i like it, they have good chemistry.

J.J is the most annoying character in comic history, a complete imbecile and I hope we never have to tolerate him on screen in any capacity again.

I don't see how a J.J. can work given a 2018 media market. Anybody in his position social power wise won't be hiring a Peter to provide content

Great post, Nardz!

Glad our opinions align with what we want out of this new Spidey.

I'm not sure what comics you've been reading, but they certainly haven't featured the J. Jonah Jameson I've been reading and loving for years. The Jonah who holds himself to such high moral standards that he willingly exposed himself to avoid being blackmailed. The Jonah who still hasn't gotten over a sense of profound failure that he couldn't save his wife's life and has been desperately trying to make up for it ever since. The Jonah who is a titan of investigative journalism, but let's a petty feud with a masked vigilante undermine his journalistic integrity. He's an incredibly complex character with a lot to say, social commentary wise. The MCU would be foolish not to include him.

Agree to disagree, not a comic reader, but the original trilogy and the animated series the guy was just annoying, I couldn't careless about his motivation, as a character he makes no sense and is a complete tool.

Honestly very few things.

1. I want to see Harry, Gwen, and MJ. Or at least one or two of them. Ned, Flash, and Michelle aren't quite cutting it for me for Peter's friend group.
2. Stark wasn't a problem for me, but we don't need him this time around (assuming he survives A4). I'd love to see a different cameo though (Dr. Strange or Hulk or w/e)
3. Age Aunt May a bit, I like Marisa Tomei. She only adds credence to Holland's youthful performance, but lets get back to roots. And let's hear a mention of Uncle Ben. Doesn't even need to be huge.

Otherwise Homecoming set the perfect precedence. Ready and waiting for round 2.

I hope I won't be heavily criticized about this, here we go: after seeing how amazing Spidey is displayed in the new PS4 game, I wanna see something like that in the next movies.

I know Peter, unlike in the game, is somewhat inexperienced, but I do want more of his great strength, agility, speed and acrobatics displayed in harmony, together with good use of the spider-sense!

Also, I want to see less reliance, if any, on Stark's tech. Peter has to develop his own tools, for more improvements in his webs-hooters, for example.

I'd be happy with some of that.

I definitely want a more DIY Peter moving forward, and I'm sure he'll mature more as he goes along, which is a good thing.

As far as this forum goes, as long as we don't get any HarryOscop type posters who turn this forum into his own personal litter box of constant nitpicks and complaints on an hourly basis, It doesn't need improving(!!!!!)
