The Dark Knight The Non-Spoiler Critic Review Thread

well i can definitly see this movie not pleasing everyone. More conservative moviegoers will probably not care for it and say its too long or too dark for a comic movie.
Well no movie is gonna please everyone. But what made you say that?

Don't know if this was posted already but The Dark Knight on Metacritic is a 97, a universal acclaim. Compared to Wall-E, a 94, this is huge!

It's a slow news day for TDK reviews, I've noticed. :(

I agree that it's exciting but a smidge premature. TDK score is based on 4 reviews so far to Wall-E's 38...

How great would it be if TDK was the best reviewed movie of the year though?!

Maybe the fact that there are plenty of people who stand in opposition to these kinds of films being done in a very classical manner. It doesnt seem to be effecting the reviews much so far.

People typically view comic book movies as movies like Iron Man or Spider-man. Very colorful and fantastic. They view comics as being fun entertainment then serious literature which is why comics are looked down upon in America. So naturally there will be a minority of reviewers who feel that they made the comics too dark and serious.

Now there are just people who just can't sit through a two hour movie, this also relates to people who are just generally not interested in the subject matter and while they might enjoy it they might want to do something else.

Indeed, and on top of that, many blockbuster films have the same stigma. Batman Begins franchise being both a comic adaptation AND a blockbuster, its really breaking some molds some will refuse to accept.

Exactly, some people might feel if its not broken don't fix it. Instead of improving upon it or adding on. I had a conversation with another peer of mine who was angry that they took the Batman franchise into a realism route instead of maintaining the fantasy of the Burton series. Some people like to keep comics away from realism. Some think comics should be simple good vs. evil. An absolute hero who will always be a good guy, not a character who will fail.

I always felt that both styles balance each other out. Its the Ying/Yang effect. We have great campy movies like spiderman, and to counterbalance, we have Batman now. Its all good.

Ya some movies balance out the fun with the dark and I think its a good mix. It will be a problem when all movies try to be dark like TDK.

What Christopher Nolan has done is to take Batman very seriously, and in “The Dark Knight,” he brings the hero full circle in a sprawling, breathtaking action masterpiece. Reinforced by excellent performances all around and propelled by its director’s full-bodied vision, “The Dark Knight” is a triumphant piece of filmmaking that reminds us that no good deed goes unpunished, but asks us if we are truly willing to pay the price.

I can't tell if Ansen's review is positive or not. He says he wishes it were "more fun".

Yea, I caught that. That kind of threw me off but when you click on the review, the top of your internet browser reads the quote that I posted from him. So I guess it's a positive review.

Rotten Tomatoes has Ansen's listed as a Fresh review.

Interesting that this review is posted right after the latest discussion in this thread. I get an overall positive read from Ansen's review, but still, his comment that "this is Batman, not Hamlet" irks me. Wish it was more fun all you want, but not because of the source material. And also, I hope this means he dislikes other relentlessly dark movies, such as No Country For Old Men, Requiem for a Dream, and so forth.

In that review there doesnt seem to be any blatant compliments. Certain fiction will have a stigma attached to them, which will demand limits on its range of styles. Its ultimately prejudice, nothing more.

This is why TDK wont get a 100% rating, but a damn good one.

Ansen's also mentions how the humour from the Burton series is now gone, it's almost as if he believes this is the same series and connected to the other four.

From JIM LEE's Myspace Blog:

"So this weekend looks to be very busy for me...this weekend has me traveling to LA for business, then I head to NYC for the Dark Knight premiere on Monday night. Shown in IMAX, it's gonna be AMAZING. I say that with 100% confidence as I already saw it last week and boys and girls, ladies and gentlemen...this is THE DEFINITIVE BATMAN movie. Few movie sequels are better than the first but this one is riveting and gripping from start to finish. Heath's performance is Oscar nod worthy and frankly, the direction is too. It's lean, explosive punchy storytelling with a realism and grit unseen before in the superhero genre. I'll write up a fuller report once I see it again."

No doubt about it, this board is going to crash on Tuesday night (early Wednesday) at about... 1-2am when everyone gets home.

And I'm gonna have to stay off of here since I'm not going to the screening.

Ansens review isnt negative ._.; he just wished it was a bit more light hearted I'm sure TDK will get a couple negative but if this one falls as one then thats just plain wrong when he praised the movie
