Superman & Lois General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS!)

One thing I will be happy to have been wrong about if it happens!

Sadly, I'm not getting that warm and fuzzy feeling from that Forbes article. The author doesn't seem to know much and is merely speculating on the basis of Borys Kit's report. I'd honestly feel better if an update came directly from him.

This is an interesting article concerning Lois' cancer storyline if it does wonders for anyone long-term.

‘Superman & Lois’ Has a Fridging Problem
An interesting topic. But I’m a bit skeptical of the analysis. The implication of the essay is that Supes/CK is a deep and fully realized character — while Lois gets the short end of the stick and is relegated to the “fridging” trope. Except… Supes isn’t that deep. Call it genre expectation (or genre limitation), but Supes’ main arc is balancing a soap opera-y family life with superheroism. IOW, this ain’t Shakespeare. So to suggest that Lois’s (often moving) cancer storyline pales in comparison is, IMO, a bit of a stretch.

Now (and as mentioned before), if Lois’s life is saved by a sci-fi deus ex machina, I think it’ll come across as an easy cheat. But I’m reluctant to criticize the show for a sin it has not yet committed. (Burn that bridge when we come to it.:cwink:) Meanwhile, it’s still possible that Lois will have an overall arc that’s more true-to-life and celebrates her own strength and agency. But the essay suggests the following “fix”:

Lois is just as capable as Superman of being a symbol of hope and inspiration. So, what can Superman & Lois do to show this? Well, when Clark was weakened, he got thrown into the sun—let’s see Lois get an equally epic resolution to her cancer storyline.

Well, one resolution is that Lois survives (like many cancer patients) thanks to medical intervention and personal fortitude. But I’m not sure what an “epic resolution” would be — unless we fall back on the deus ex machina. Moreover, I’m not sure how an “epic resolution” addresses the alleged “fridging” problem. Indeed, if Kryptonian or Mannheim tech ends up saving Lois, then she’s kinda back to being a damsel-in-distress plot device.

Sorry but Lois is not being "fridged" what an awful take. Her illness is not some trope to lessen her and heighten the male characters she is going through a real life situation (one Superman can't fix) and doing so in a realistic way that barely holds her back. She is most of the focus of the season...but yeah being fridged.

While I'm impressed with how much care the show has put into Lois's cancer storyline, I am kind of disappointed that it's pretty much taken over most of the show.

After watching his first exchange with Bruno, I was hoping that we would see Clark/Superman tackle some of the discussed issues for the remainder of this season.

I will be very surprised if they renew the show, but I do believe MAX will pick it up, so it's fine.

It has fans at the network, but its simply too expensive under their new model.

The fact that they refuse to give answers at UPFRONTS is annoying.

They don't own Walker or All American so their statement about not owning this one was weird. None of those are bringing them money but it brings ratings and notoriety for being Superman.

Superman & Lois, creatively, is very strong. It does well in broadcast, it does well in digital… but it’s expensive [and] doesn’t make money for us. And we don’t have the rights to the prior seasons. You need to have a library [for people to find a show]… and the prior seasons are [on HBO Max].

Sadly, I think that quote pretty much seals the deal on the fate of this show getting cancelled, because at the end of the day regardless of quality if it isn't making money for them there's no reason for them to renew it.

It also doesn't help that it's one of their more expensive shows.

If Superman and Lois go to HBO Max and CW renews Gotham Knights, it'd be a win-win for everyone.

What would Superman & Lois look like under HBO Max if they pick it up:

-Moving production from one place to another?

-Setting the series from Smallville to Metropolis?

-Possible budget increase and cast changes?

-Keeping the cinematic tone or changing it?

-Bringing in Superman villains and guest-heroes?
