Some things simply don't age well, for various reasons, while others become iconic staples of the era, good or bad. It's not more complicated than that, imo. Whether or not you like an outdated reference is subjective. Context is key, though.
I've never seen anyone vehemently against contemporary music in present day films, though. I've seen people against too many references to whatever the "hot thing of the moment" is, that a faction of people don't like and would consider passing fads that they suspect to be irrelevant in a year's time...but I think there's a whole other psychological thing at work there (like acknowledging it in film is immortalizing it in a way it doesn't "deserve" or something).
