Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

My personal objection to that moment isn't that joke itself, but rather what I fear it may bode for the rest of the film...

Its unfortunate that anyone who expresses reservations about an upcoming MCU project gets shouted down and accused of being a humourless jerk...

It's the fact that people complain about jokes in every MCU movie trailer. For example, a lot of people didn't like the end of the Shang Chi Trailer because of a joke that Akwafina made. That is my issue with people's complaints about the MCU that there's too much humor in all of these movies. It's fantasy, it's not supposed to be taken seriously.

Also, Kingo is likely to be the character with the most humor. He's a Bollywood star, and from the little I have seen of those movies, his arc is going to be humorous but also serious. Those movies are wild and crazy and not super serious.

Yeah, plus being a real comedian he could handle it well.

Paul Rudd was able to handle it well and officially graduate to adult humor doing the MCU after years of doing juvenile humor.

When Kumail was cast in this movie and that Kingo was going to be a Bollywood star, how many people thought "this will be the superhero movie without any humor! We'll make this movie 100% serious!" I didn't because of Kumail and the plans for the character.

Humor is what humanizes characters. It shows they aren’t just gods but a family unit that has meals together and laugh at one another like most families do. I don’t want a joyless slog like another superhero franchise that shall not be named.

This looks beautiful. Gemma Chan, Selma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie look so great. Really excited to see them in these roles. I’m avoiding all the leaks in case any are true but this does look quite interesting.

Yeah, unfortunately as usual it's the corporate-mandated MCU gags that are the biggest problem here.

Hopefully it'll be less prevalent in the movie (although I'm not holding my breath).
There would be more of that in the film unless Kevin Feige makes a change.

I'm not against comedy and jokes as long as it feels organic and not forced.

So when Kumail, an actor who is a stand up comic by nature is playing Kingo, who in the MCU will be a Bollywood Star (with Bollywood known for their flash and craziness from what little I have seen of those movies), many people thought it was going to be 100% serious?

I don't get that.

Again, my problem isn't with humour in superhero movies, but rather that far too often in the MCU jokes are shoe-horned in in places where they don't belong in a half-hearted attempt to compensate for the lack of real substance.

Kingo in the MCU will be organic humor. Bollywood films usually aren't serious and his character is a Bollywood character.

I get that. All I am saying is that people should not be expecting a 100% serious MCU movie in the Eternals when one of their characters is a Bollywood actor.

I'm not against comedy in these movies and I'm a fan of most of the MCU humor. In fact I’ve not been a fan of grim dark for the sake of being grim dark movies. But the execution of this scene felt jarring and just put a sour note at the end of what was an otherwise alright trailer.

Maybe the bit plays differently in the context of the movie itself but out of context it doesn't work well IMO.

I am all for not spoiling half the movie, but I also want to learn about the movie. In general, teaser trailers do little for me. They basically amount to "this movie exists" and that doesn't do much for me. So in general, I would like something more out of the first trailers we see. I mean, things like seeing cool costumes and such can be given to me in a still image. I ask for more from trailers than that

Well the purpose of a teaser is to tease. The first OFFICIAL trailer will show more.

Yeah, they look amazing, have a regal feel to them.

The joke falls flat because we essentially don't know the characters. We don't know if that guy is fit to lead the Avengers or not. We don't know jack sh** about any of them. It simply doesn't work without any sort of context.

The trailer looks awesome. There is definitely a very regal look to all the characters though I agree about the joke near the end. The "we helped them progress" followed immediately by "we have never interfered" was a weird choice as well. Anyway, looks the most promising and interesting of the next three MCU movies. Definitely want to see more.

You can accomplish both. For example the Venom Let There Be Carnage trailer I think did a good job at both serving as a tease and giving you an idea what the movie is about. I don't like the "movie exists" trailers. All the Marvel trailers lately are basically "Who is this person(s)? What can they do? Here is a costume shot! End" I can get all those things in stills. I want an actual taste of of the movie from a trailer. Teasers are in general a waste

How familiar are you with Marvel comics? Because the MCU is actually watered down on the comedy front compared to the source material. The first time Avengers faced Taskmaster, Beast was singing while fighting his henchmen.

Teasers used to be like one minute long. Literal purpose is to tease before the first proper trailer.

I think it's more that almost every single character has to make jokes in these movies. No matter how serious they start, they always have to end up being a quipster. It just doesn't work for some characters with me.

Do we already know which character is supposed to be LGTB? I remember last year someone confirmed we had our first official representation of this.
