Black Widow at the Box Office!

I understood it more with films like Mulan, Soul and even Raya since theaters weren't really open yet at that time, but with Black Widow and Jungle Cruise I think it was just a stupid decision.
Studios are like every other business dealing with these very uncertain times. They do what they can to survive and they adjust accordingly.

For most of the hardcore fans who go to see these films 2, 3, 4 times Disney plus meant they could go to theaters then order at home or just order at home and save a ton which is the first thing to consider.

Secondly this movie in the larger MCU is weird. It was never going to be End Game big like a lot of these writers allude to. Black Panther and Captain Marvel were the largest domestic openings for a single hero debut, and they had a lot going for them. Black Panther was just excellent and had a cultural movement. Captain Marvel her placement in the release order leading up to End Game and benefited from all they hype and thirst at the time. BW was released after the IFW/EG hype and set before it. We know Nat's going to live so it needed to setup some much bigger items in the universe and on the surface of things we don't see much of that. Also it wasn't a top tier MCU film. Most of the rankings in the MCU ranking thread even put it middle of the road. So we should expect it will perform like one of the top tier films. Instead we should expect closer to DrS or Ant Man.

Given that this movie as it currently stands is more like a bridge between CW and IFW and didn't push the narrative much, where even FatWS, WV, and Loki pushed the narrative forward, and also given the Disney plus same time release none of the second week results are all that surprising.

Also this doesn't mean that we're burnt out on Marvel. It means we want better.

Marvel was in a bit of a tough spot with this one. Still glad that they made it, though.

Have there been any indications of how much Disney + made from the BW fees for streaming it? (ignoring any extra signups as a result)

Yes. They made $60 million from Disney+ opening weekend

Box Office Mojo estimates that Black Widow has made about $254 million, so far.

Oh that’s a lot! More than I expected. It should kind of count towards the OW as a footnote or something lol.

Yeah, they refuse to say. Which means it probably didn't go that well after that.

Keep in mind that Disney probably doesn't share that $60 million revenue with theaters either. Under normal circumstances, with a 50/50 revenue share the film would've had to make $120 million for them to get that.

On top of that when someone orders direct from Disney plus the money goes straight into Disney's coffers. They're not waiting a month or more for theater owners to transfer the funds following a revenue sharing program and calculation. So they're getting an extra month's interest on that money.

Well, that's not entirely true, though. Disney gives a 15% of what they gain in Disney+ to other platform providers, so in reality they gain something close to 85% of the profits. And let's not forget that cinemas only get 10-20% of the box office in opening weekend and the weekend after that.

Isn't Shang-Chi supposed to have 45 window before it goes to streaming?

If BW had come to PA a week later, I probably would've still bought it.

I think that 45 window is only happening for other studios like Universal.

Like Apple+, Playstation, etc. I haven't thought of that. So yeah they still need boX office numbers. Because if Hollywood are just going to rely on streaming. A lot of these blockbuster films won't get a $100 million production budget. A lot of NetfliX movies don't look like they got more budget The Incredible Hulk.

According to Box office Mojo,
Black Widow made 11.6 million this weekend.
Global box office for the film is an estimated 314 million, so far.
Btw, in its second weekend,Space Jam 2 fell 69 percent.
That's right. two percent LOWER than BW.

Black Widow had a -55% second to third weekend drop. For reference, F9 had a -50% third weekend drop.

And both of those movies were released simultaneously in streaming. That certainly played its part.
