Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Box-Office Numbers

Ant-Man and the Wasp made it to 35 Mio. in weekend 2, so I guess they are satisfied with it.

That is a fantastic hold. I think this thing does 300+ domestic in Normal times. And it's coming off an inflated holiday weekend. Reminds me of when Black Panther dropped only 44% after coming off and inflated opening weekend.

I think that's right. There are other comparisons too. For me, it reminds me a lot of when GotG came out. They were also basically unknown characters, the movie had really good marketing push, the reviews were great, there was great word of mouth, and they didn't have a whole lot of competition (Unless you want to call TMNT competition.....it took one week only to be leapfrogged by GotG). You could literally feel the buzz growing. It ended up at about 330M with a 3.3+ multiplier.

Not sure there's really anything the rest of this month that'll displace Shang-Chi from the #1 spot.

I think that’s right. Something might pop up for a day or something like that, but this movie is going to leapfrog them

Warner Bros. isn't marketing any of these films. Day and date releasing was a mistake.

Shang-Chi continues to shatter expectations and has now pulled ahead of Black Widow.

Great Saturday bump! Hoping the Sunday drop is softer than expected (as is usually the case) and we see a weekend number closer to $37M.

Nothing really appealing until Venom.
NFL being back will only impact Sunday numbers, Thursday and Monday is just 1 game.

True. Even with the NFL, if people want to go see it, they'll just plan to do it Friday or Saturday. It basically has 3 more weeks, and 2 weekends before Venom and Addams Family hit the theaters. BTW, I'm not sure how Venom is going to do. I could see it opening pretty poorly and going down fast from there. Addams Family looks more like something our younger kids will drag their parents in to see. LOL.

Venom should be fine it is only 1hr and 35 min so not too time consuming. Probably won't have much of a storyline, I love Carnage he is one of my favorite villains. He doe not need a sentimental backstory like most try to give for a villain. He is there to just kill which is what the movie will probably be.

Disney may have overestimated Sunday a bit, but anything under a 55% drop should still be considered a great second weekend hold IMO, especially for a Marvel movie which have become more frontloaded over the years.

This movie is locked to finish over $200M regardless though and will likely be the number 1 movie of the year until NWH comes out which is definitely a HUGE win IMO.

I think it gets its legs cut out from underneath it the next weekend (Maybe a little over 50M OW as a floor?) and doesn't do too much after that. I don't think it'll bomb, but I don't think it gets anywhere close to Shang Chi and, depending on how it's reviewed, I think Eternals will do better as it has a more friendly corridor with a slightly better OW (The Marvel Effect).

It already outgrossed The Incredible Hulk.

Even with the pandemic, that's not particularly surprising when you consider the growth of MCU post Iron Man and, especially, The Avengers.

Got it. $3.2 million (+32%) Tuesday per Mendelson at Forbes.

Disney made a good decision not to delay this, again. A well paid eXperiment. If Paramount/Sony were in their position, it would have been delayed for at least a month.

$2,466,295 Wednesday
-22% v Tuesday
-47% v last week
$152,612,024 domestic total
