No Way Home "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility" - Tobey Maguire Returns As RaimiVerse Spider-Man

He wasn’t important enough in the movie to even make a big deal out of him not signing or trying to convince. The movie could have easily moved forward without him. I think it’s fair to say based on his history that the one that the biggest issue was Tobey. Whether that’s factual or not, no one will ever know. However, They needed him to make this movie work so him not jumping on board right away would be an huge problem.

I don’t see anyone making a story out of Lizard not being in the movie. He barely was noticeable anyway.

Its got nothing to do with importance. Its about playing a role you hate. Whether you're important to the movie or not, you're still playing a character you loathe. Who wants to do something they don't enjoy on any level?

Feige said the one who was most difficult to convince is the not the one you think it was. So if your first thought is Tobey then by Feige's implication you're flat out wrong.

No one is ever going to know for sure who it was. It’s all assumption. I’m going to assume it was Tobey just based on everything that’s come out about him in the past and so on. Who knows? Could be someone else. You obviously think it’s someone different that might have held up the process. Unless there is some direct and specific naming by the studio (which I doubt they will ever do out of professional courtesy) no ones going to know for sure.

Also, whether he hates the role or not…he’s not important enough to the story in the movie to make a “story out of an actor being difficult to sign on”. They could have just as easily moved on with or without him. I’m not talking about how he feels about the role or whether he hates it not. I’m saying that the reason this made news leads me to believe it was a character of more importance.

End of the day, no one will ever know for sure.

Nobody made any kind of a story about any of the specific actors being difficult to sign on. All this discussion has come from comments made from you guys. Nothing more. You keep banging on about how he wasn't important. Again it has nothing to do with importance. Its about how difficult he would have been to convince given he is the one and only actor I've ever heard of in the entirety of the Spider-Man movie franchise who actually hated his role. And made a public ass out of himself trashing the role, too.

Given that their story revolved on not just the returning Spideys but also multiple villains from each universe, their choices were limited with the TASM world. Rhino was too much of a farce to even be a serious contender. And the less said about that joke of a "Goblin" Dane DeHaan played the better, especially since we were already getting a proper Goblin from Raimi's universe. So they were pretty much left with Lizard and Electro. They could have just made Lizard a mute CGI monster, but they clearly wanted all their villains to have a personality, no matter how limited the role.

I do think Tobey probably did take some serious convincing, but I don't think he was the most difficult one. Especially after what Feige said on that subject.

Are you Tobey’s publicist?

Riding with your boy til the grave. I respect it. :oldrazz:

I would have thought it was Tobey too. My guess is probably Dafoe, given that in the interview he only said he'd do it if he did all the stunts himself, which is a risk to the studio with his age etc.

I don't think Tobey was ever outright "hard to convince" as people seem to claim. I do genuinely believe he cares about the character and whether or not it's worth coming back for. It's been said that both him and garfield really wanted to read the script first.

Massive amounts of respect and props for Dafoe to value doing more of the live action sequences. Also like him being upfront and basically saying “I’m only down for this if I’m main baddie” lol.

I would really love a tell all book or directors cut version of this movie detailing everything and letting out all the juicy secrets. If there was ever a movie that would qualify as needing a directors cut detailing the process of what went on behind the scenes it’s this movie. Lol

The fact that the Lizard was less important probably meant they weren't willing to pay as much. Also it makes more sense that they started filming without him being locked in, since they could have just gotten a different voice actor if they absolutely needed to.

So you've got a guy who really hates the role, and a studio who wants to pay as little as possible and who knows they can just hire someone else if things don't work out. I can definitely see that as a recipe for Ifans being difficult to get on board.

Being difficult over a voice role sounds kinda dumb. its pretty much an easy pay cheque. the idea that he hates the role so much he won't even take a pay cheque for one day's work seems rather silly to me.

I mean even when he was asked about it he had a "huge grin oh his face" when he said
Well you know, like most Christmas presents, the good thing is not knowing what’s in them until it’s time to open them.

Oh he had a smile on his face after the role was done, he had his money, and had to do zero publicity for the movie. Yes that must mean he wasn't hard to convince all because he smiled there. Sound logic.

Tobey loved being back! Dispels any fake rumors of him being a diva or whatever.

Lol Tobey being a diva isn’t a fake rumor. The dude is a diva by all accounts but we love him all the same. He’s our diva. Glad to see the curtain being pulled back and people starting to openly talk about Tobey/Andrew being in the film.

To be fair, even if he was would Tom Holland really say that in an interview with Marvel.com :funny:

Maybe.

Tom be having a habit of letting things slip out that he shouldn’t at times lol.

Honestly though what did people expect Tom to say? “Man working with Tobey and Andrew was horrible. Can’t stand them “ lol.

It seems like Tobey mellowed out some -- he certainly wasn't phoning in his performance in NWH. I can still see him play hardball with salary, but maybe he got how much his Spider-man meant to people over the years.

He’s definitely a diva, but seven years of being out of the spot light tends to mellow a person out. You can practically feel the passion reinvigorated in his performance.
