Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness general news and discussion thread

Better than the first movie.

Yeah hell no. Not even close.

But if Raimi can direct the 3rd one without much studio interference and forcing all these multiverse/Wanda/other heroes into that one it should be the best one. This movie is a mess and without Raimi it would be the lowest reviewed MCU film easily, he kept it together as best as he could. They just need a better writer and a hands off approach. What made this movie a mess was that it didn't really feel like a Strange movie. The focus was too much on Wanda and the whole multiverse BS. You could have cut out Wanda, illuminati, all the Strange variants, side characters and the movie would have been infinitely better for it.

They did Strange really dirty here. Barely had 1 film to himself, this is his 2nd one, and the movie felt half his while the other half was about Wanda, and even when Strange was in the scene Wanda was there nearly all the time. Elizabeth and Benedict did a great job with what they were given, but holy hell did they do both characters dirty. Wanda should have had her own film if they felt like going after her tedious plotline with her kids but that place wasn't here. This is Strange's only 2nd film. The focus should have been Strange and Strange only. This was the one where a character focused film would be perfect before he becomes THE Sorcerer Supreme in the 3rd one. Now whatever happens in the 3rd won't have that impact since Strange feels very bland as a character because they barely focused on his development. I respect Scott Derrickson for saying no taking the focus off Strange and doing this mess of a film that did no character a favor. And this might hurt its box office legs. Never got the impression the crowd was too into it.

I watched the film and I was livid as a Strange fan. I will never view DS MOM as a DS film.
Some people can be such hypocrites though. Imagine you're a Spidy fan and in NWH Doctor Strange gets as much screentime as Spidy not only that but defeats everyone and then says oopsie i'll go now byeeeee or if Strange did this in Wandavision. How would Wanda/Spidy fans have felt ? Same energy people.

Yup, I was watching Randoplh's review of this and you could tell she felt very embarrassed because she was saying "there were a ton of characters and cameos that i KNOW were in this but they apparently cut out," basically trying to cover her tracks because she is one of the biggest culprits in trying to paint this movie as a cameo extravaganza. I dont think it ever was and the internet blew it way out of proportion.

She has no credibility. Why do you even watch her and talk about her videos? Look at this garbage.

Kind of a waste of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo as well.

What happens in the first film is basically hand waved.
I’d been looking forward to his return but given that he was quite important in the first film I expected more here. He wasn’t bad but his role should have been more significant.

Overall I enjoyed this movie, but some parts didn't click and walking out I was a bit underwhelmed. This doesn't feel like the type of movie that gets better on rewatches.

This might be sacrilegious to say, but at one point, Ejiofor was one of my top choices to portray T'Challa/Black Panther. I just feel like he's wasted here.

Same with Mads Mikkelsen as Caecilius.

He is a great actor with the right material so it could have been possible. Who knows, maybe he still can one day.

Mads was a huge waste given he had a prominent role. It just wasn’t developed properly.

I would've had Mads as a purely villainous, unrepentant Mordo who turns on Strange and his allies.

I... look, I don't mind people having different opinions and it's perfectly fine that you didn't enjoy it but jesus, you're acting like this movie ran over your dog or something with this level of hyperbole. Not to mention you're clearly projecting your negative bias onto how everyone who wants to see the movie will feel about it as if it's an inevitability.

Calm down a bit.

The trailers made this look so much better than it actually was and I walked out a bit.. underwhelmed. The hype levels were way too big for what it actually was.

There were barely an consequences going forward and what happened in NWH didn't carry over to Strange's arc in this film at all.

Still, a very entertaining MCU entry but not something I would consider top-tier Marvel.

Some people are going to feel like their dog got run over by one of the major inciting incidents here, lol. And elsewhere.
That's like the only aspect where I 100% understand the polarizing reactions lol

Raimi did not hold back there.

I enjoyed the first film as much as other people but let's be honest,it was Iron Man 1 with Dr Strange. And I disagree that they done Strange dirty, he's arc is first and upfront. It's his movie with Wanda as a villain because she's the villain in this.

Strange's progression as a character is evident. I felt he was finally at peace and happy with himself. I had no problem with how he was handled in this film. I'm even more excited for his next appearance given how this film ended.

Your Spidey analogy doesn't apply here because DR Strange was not the main villain of NWH. Simple. Heck it's Strange who saves the multiverse in MHW. You upset about that too? Coz it was HIS SPELL that SAVED THE DAY if you really wanna start talking about all this.

Were you also upset that Iron Man had as much screen time in CW?? Coz that was a Captain America film.

I enjoyed the film quite a bit. Flaws and all. Definitely looks like there's a lot left on the cutting room floor. There's a lot of things that can be seen as flaws but Strange as a character? I disagree.

Thank you

I forgot Mads was the villain in the first Doctor Strange movie. That’s how forgettable and underused he was. What a waste of a great actor. Would have loved him to play Doctor Doom instead

Posting from other thread: MoM went in a direction I didn’t want but I knew that beforehand and also knew all the cameos ahead of time. With all that foreknowledge I enjoyed the film a lot. If I hadn’t utterly spoiled myself I could have ruined the film for me - kind of the reverse of how it works for most people. :D
Different Strokes For Different Folk's!
Glad that you enjoyed it.

I'm glad that Raimi finally got to direct an MCU film with his signature style behind the camera, but at the same time it felt like they could have let him off the leash even more.

This still felt way too safe to me outside of some genuine Raimi/horror moments and I wanted to see so much more of that display here, but I guess my expectations were too high.

I was really enjoying the first 20 minutes or so, but the middle portion of this movie felt like something else entirely and it was just too much going on for my liking that was taking away from the main story.

Olsen is great as always, but I didn't like the writing for her in this and they really didn't do anything all that interesting with the Multiverse angle which is probably what disappointed me the most.

Chiwetel Ejifor and Rachel McAdam's were massively wasted in this too and man I wish I could say I loved that Illuminati scene, but outside of fanservice that was such a massive waste of screen time IMO.

I think what I would've liked is if he gets to go in at the ground floor and form a character from start to finish and not come in for the second outing when a lot of things are already set and established.

Spot on. I expected more with the whole Multiverse angle.

Strange visited like what, 2 or 3 other universes? I expected more and while the Illuminati scene was a waste like you said, I expected more cameos

People genuinely hated
the Bruce Campbell post-credits scene? Huh? Why?

Yeah, it was a gag, but I found it a cute nod to Evil Dead. Calling that one of the worst MCU credits scenes seems unbearably hyperbolic and speaks more of your expectations than anything.

I will say the Clea scene was clunky though.
