DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Gunn’s comments ruffled a few feathers at WBD according to THR. Good.

Just wishful thinking, but somewhere down the line, if James Gunn and Peter Safran end up being successful enough with this venture and gain a lot of push and pull in the industry to have a lot of say because of this, I hope it leads to David Zaslav eventually getting the boot, ala Ike Perlmutter, if he threw becomes too much of a frugal, pennypinching hindrance to the company.

Lord knows, if it gets to a point where the cheapskate in the business of wanting to cut down on costs doesn’t end up wanting to dish out the necessary funds for some more expensive projects, from a business perspective, they could definitely find a reason to kick him out and replace him.

So, for those of you that saw them, remember my posts about the theories I posited about the first “Justice League” film being an adaptation of “The New Frontier” and the villain being “The Centre”?

Well, someone posted this picture on the DCEU Leaks Reddit of James Gunn re-sharing someone’s Instagram post of a certain popular graphic novel:

If that ends up being the case, I would be over the moon. “The New Frontier” is an excellent book and would make a great foundation for the DCU.

Honestly, I'm right there with that theory.

In fact, I suspect that there's a good chance that the Justice League type film of Chapter 1 will actually just be titled The New Frontier. Especially since Gunn and Safran apparently said at the conference that some of the titles from the unannounced projects had to be withheld for the time being since they felt they gave the game away too soon.

I struggle to think of a better comic to use for inspiration than The New Frontier.

Yup.

The only issue with The New Frontier is the time line. You would need to move it up to closer to the modern era.

One of the best stories though so I'm in!

Oh yeah, I have no doubt that if they do adapt The New Frontier that there'll be some notable adjustments made to have it fit into the modern era. Kind of like how Martin Campbell and co. updated the plot of Casino Royale from being all about the Cold War like in the original novel from the 50's to being about Post-9/11 international terrorists in 2006.

Well, because it took place during the Cold War, it dealt with American paranoia of certain things such as the Red Scare, fear of oncoming nuclear warfare, Communism, fear of and distrust of the other, etc. You could just replace that with more modern stuff, like conspiracy theories, environmentalism/global warming, distrust of the government, religious fanaticism, prejudice, etc.

Similar fears, but more applicable to our time.

I like The New Frontier a lot but I always found the Centre to be kinda... dumb. :funny:

I mean, kinda yeah. But it adds up very well with the pieces we know of so far (i.e. Lanterns revolving around the mystery of an ancient Earth-based threat, Swamp Thing tying back to the larger narrative in some way or another, the WW-related project being about the origins of Paradise Island) and it has the added benefit of being a very different sort of threat for a large Avengers-level type crossover superhero film than what most audiences are used to.

I'd say just try to reimagine the Centre a bit. More Lovecraftian chaos entity and less "dinosaur time capsule."

On that, I completely agree. Especially if the mystery around the Centre (if this is what the plan is, of course) starts being explored in Lanterns. Go all in on it being an Eldritch Lovecraftian type threat.

Which is where I am at too. I think it will be just as poignant.

Thinking about all this is very exciting!

Should they go for a more muscular Diana this time around? Not pumped/ripped like a bodybuilder, but a physique along the lines of those of British heptathletes Jessica Ennis and Denise Lewis?

Depends on how the character is to be portrayed. Gal was perfect for her version...but a true warrior should definetly be more muscular.

I hope so because not only would you have a new actress but you would also have a visually distinct to Gal.
I would love to see a more Darwyn Cooke type Wonder Woman in the DCU.

When I look at this pic to me I see a more muscular Wonder Woman. Not a shredded bodybuilder ripped WW but a WW who Hits the gym. I wish I could explain what I mean better but I'm drawing a blank on who I could compare her to and a better choice of words.
