The Rise of Skywalker General Star Wars Episode IX News/Speculation Thread - Part 1

There are some crazy ones. How about wanting to break Daisy's fingers because she got married to Tom Bateman. They also wanted her so called unborn baby (which we don't know if she was / is pregnant) to die? Saying her husband is using her for her status and saying he's secretly gay?

I really don't think that is fine? Do you? Maybe one person, maybe multiple I don't know. But it sure is weird. I have screen caps but if I post them, I'd probably be banned because it's truly horrific.

So you found what? 3 screenshots? I think compared to the SW fanbase, Adam's is fine. Every fanbase has the weird ones, but you choose to focus on those instead of the people that donated to his charity AITAF and raised more money after TROS came out than was ever raised before in one shot. And merely as a thank you for Adam playing Ben Solo/Kylo.

Social media brings out the worst as well as the best.
I actually find it disturbing that people have so much hatred for a fictional character because he killed another fictional character. I got a lot of abuse verbally from someone who accused me of not being a 'real' Han Solo fan because I sympathised with Kylo Ren. And I say this as someone who used to live in a fantasy world as an antidote to depression.

Is there something wrong with disliking a fictional character for being a villain?

Is that a defense? Did the person say all of them did negative things and such?

He talked about the fanbase as a whole so yeah, generalizing for sure.

There's nothing wrong with disliking a character, but there is something wrong with disliking a real person for liking a character.

Generalisation? When you have just misgenderd me?

I see you must have seen all this and just ignored it or tried to hide it? Good for you for giving money for charity but hiding behind money doesn't take away the delirium and nastiness because a woman got married. Also my problem is not with you or anybody else in here but yes I have had negative experiences with Adam's fanbase. Even if you come charging in like a knight in shining armour, your not going to take that away. It's still there. It's not personal and am sorry if for some reason I hurt you because you sound hurt. What else can I say? These posts are still out there, these people are still saying horrific problematic stuff, I can't retract my dislike for that part of the fanbase. Either way it would be a lie.

Am offering a hand of friendship here, what else do you want me to say?

Thank You.

Yes unfortunately, you do have a target on your back if you disagree and dislike Kylo. It's almost like parts of fandom try and force him onto you whether you like him or not. He's the bad guy, I root for the heros. I think its just jealousy because the hero survived and the bad guy didn't which seeps into hatred. Not my problem.

Jealousy? :funny:

Okay, these are fictional characters. Yeesh.

Some people cheer for the heroes and some for the villains. It's not controversial. It gets annoying when people hold on to some moral high ground because they deem the character they like as better or morally superior than another. It's pathetic.

Also, you don't have to get in a twist because I got your gender wrong. How was I supposed to know? It's not a generalization, it was a guess based on statistics of this site.

I never forgot reading that Adam Driver admitted he was 'terrified' of how fans would react when his character 'killed' Han Solo! He was almost physically sick at the premier.

What I find funny, is the person who actually killed Han Solo....is Harrison Ford! He wanted him killed off in ROTJ, but Lucas refused because he wanted a happy ending.
I really would love to know what Lucas privately thinks of how the Skywalker saga ended.

There are out there fans across the spectrum.

Heck there are fans who can't understand that not liking a particular role an actor has played , or disliking one film a filmmaker makes, doesn't then mean you hate that actor or director.

I wasn't a fan of the Kylo Ren character in general ,but I thought Adam Driver was very moving in A Marriage Story, and I felt the character in that was compelling.

I wasn't a big fan of RJ's creative choices in TLJ, but I thought Knives Out was brilliantly written , funny, and cleaver film.

Did they say the fanbase as a whole, when they brought that up? The post you replied to says "some":

Did the person say that?

They said "I do have a problem with his fanbase."

Generalizing.

And to your second point, I was talking about the users here who have said awful things about the people who ship Reylo.

I think they are confusing reylos with 'daivers' a weird sub group who 'ship' Daisy and Adam. I haven't spoken to any reylo who has this opinion. They have great respect for Adam and his wife.

I'm not a fan of shipping real life people because the lines can be blurred. If they can keep it to the fanfiction websites sure, but otherwise it's problematic.

Exactly. At the end of the day, it's really the characters people fall in love with, not the actors who are playing them, and who of course they don't know!
As a person I respect Adam Driver as a talented actor and for the work he and his wife Jo Tucker have done for AITAF. I did think it was nice however, that Adam Driver went on social media to thank reylos who donated money to their charity - he hates social media and avoids it at all costs so it shows he was genuinely moved by what the fans did.

Having a problem with his fanbase isn't saying why or generalizing all of those in it as one thing. In the post you quoted, from your post that I was pointing to where you said that they found 3 screenshots and such, the person said "some", not "all", not "the majority", not even "a lot of".

Cool story. It still started out as generalizing. I'm not arguing semantics this is dumb.

Norman Bates was also a victim of abuse, but is still regarded as a serial killer. Kylo spends over 2/3s of this trilogy killing people or ordering others to kill people. Overall, he was treated very nicely by TROS considering the set up.

The Skywalker bloodline gets far too much attention in my opinion. I really don't care if Skywalker's DNA is passed down or not. The legacy, the history, the story, that can all be channeled through Rey just fine as an adopted member. A Skywalker in name only is enough when the name is its power. She took the name to honour it, with the blessing of the family. I found the execution thoroughly underwhelming myself but as an idea it's hardly erasing or replacing the family legacy.

I am not bothered by Rey not being a Skywalker by blood either. That idea I think works better for me. TROS didn't make the series suck in retrospect for not making her a blood Skywalker. Making a poorly written piece of trash made it suck

Ironically the 'Rey Skywalker' scene might be my least favourite in the whole saga, for pretty much every reason other than Rey adopting the name.

I honestly really like the scene up until the moment the old lady shows up. John Williams' score there is so haunting and epic, and the idea of the final coda for the saga taking place on Tatooine seemed like a no-brainer to me. I think people complaining that Tatooine wasn't an appropriate burial ground for the Skywalker twins were being a bit too literal about it. Leia's home planet is gone, and whether Luke liked it or not-- it's where he's from. The main idea there is that the twins are together now, forever. I thought it was a nice touch.

It's mainly the "Rey Who?" that irks me. That was really tacky. Would've worked fine with Rey just pausing and seeing the ghosts mid-answer the first time she responds. I don't know why they felt that was necessary.

Also, the idea that one single movie made the rest of the series suck in retrospect is silly to me. It's the same nonsense as "the prequels raped my childhood." It's just hyperbole. Neither the prequels or sequels erases the good memories you have watching the OT growing up, or what those movies were as a standalone trilogy either. There's no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I can watch the OT anytime. Wonderful movies regardless what came after. I also still really like TLJ, personally. I just don't love TFA or TROS.

I'm genuinely glad you feel that way, but sadly for me SW died with TROS. There are a lot of people who 'got into' SW through the spin offs such as Clone Wars, Rebels and KOTOR. but I am a fan of the original films. For me SW was the Skywalker/Solo family. I enjoyed the likes of Rogue 1 and Mando, but the heart and soul of SW will always be the Skywalker and Solo family, to me. Unlike a lot of fans, I didn't mind their fates in the ST because they had lived 'good' lives afterwards, and I was absolutely fine with Luke's fate, disappointed at Han's but I reconciled to it because of the performances of Ford and Driver.
My big problem is I'm an autistic depressant. I had a special affection for SW going back to my childhood, they always made me feel uplifted. As a result of that I can no longer see the SW saga in the same light. Anakin sacrificed himself for his son, his son and son in law sacrificed themselves to save Ben, the last of the line. Now the last of the line is gone. Unlike his predecessors he never lived past his 30th birthday, never found love of fathered a child, or earned his redemption in a productive manner. To make matters worse, I loved his character.

I've loved SW for over forty years but I honestly doubt I'll be able to watch any of the Skywalker saga again. The ending has tainted them forever. They're no longer uplifting films for me. The endgame is the Skywalkers were wiped out by a creature they failed to destroy. Rey is a Palpatine. She's the descendant of their enemy. It doesn't help that Rey became someone I can't stand, for which I'm sorry as I started off loving the character and I really like Daisy. I guess all good things have to come to an end.

I would advise you not to think of it that way. Just think of them as expensive fan fiction made by Disney. Cause that's essentially what they are. I'm sure George Lucas doesn't consider them canon. Maybe it's frustrating that you were invested in Kylo Ren and didn't get what you wanted out of his character arc-- but that has no bearing on Anakin and Luke's character arcs, which existed in complete and satisfactory form before Kylo Ren or Rey were even a twinkle in Disney's eye.

The heart of the story is still Anakin's rise, fall and redemption thanks to his son. Which is still a tragic and bittersweet story, with a hopeful note at the end.

I know you can't "unsee" TROS, but really- it's just a movie. I would urge you to read a book about the making of the original Star Wars trilogy, or watch a documentary on it. Do something to immerse yourself in that golden era of the 70s and 80s and remember how those imaginative films changed cinema forever. That kind of thing has always made me re-fall in love with Star Wars time and time again every time I think I've gotten sick of it. Let go of your hatred... :cwink:

You all know I loved TFA, liked TLJ and didn't like TROS. You all know this, and you all know i was burnt out on Star Wars after TROS. Well, i'm happy to say that The Mandalorian season 2 has reignited my passion for Star Wars to an extent, and made me remember why I enjoyed it. I literally finally just got done watching the final season of Clone Wars and it left me speechless. What I'm trying to say is that even if you hated the ending of the saga, just realize that What Anakin did an accomplished still stands true, as BatLobster said. That can never be taken away, no matter what. In the end, it's just a film.

Exactly!

I've had so many on and off cycles with Star Wars over the years. Deep down I always love it, but I always go through phases. I think we all needed a palette cleanser after the ST-- whether that was from the toxic fanwars, being disappointed with the films or some combination of both. Luckily I think Mando has been just the ticket.

But whatever downturns it takes, nothing can change the fact the Star Wars was, is and will always be a great, expansive universe for telling fun and meaningful stories. Every week with Mando, I just shake my head because I can't believe we're at a point where we're actually getting movie-level Star Wars production value in a TV show that expands the lore in interesting ways. It's an exciting thing to see the start of, and I really can't wait for the Obi-Wan spinoff too. I also think any successes Star Wars has with streaming will help raise the bar for any future movies that may come along.

Not hate, disappointment. But...I wish everyone who still loves this franchise the best. SW will continue and gain a fresh new audience. I think...my part in it is over. Time for me to admit I'm getting old!!! To quote Jon Snow, 'My watch has ended.'

I never said you or anybody on here. You were the one that jumped in and stated I hated all his fans. I said some. I have never mentioned shipping but you may have been speaking of others. Difference is you attributing my dislike to shipping and shippers in general. I left it awhile to reply because it would have only got nasty. Although I did see a lot of hate towards Daisy for liking her own film. A lot of them Driver stans and Reylos. Personally am happy and agree with Daisy. As for talking about jealousy; you took that personal again. I was not even talking about you. After all Kylo's character pales into insignificance when I was chatting about Rey Skywalker. As I have said before I want to be friends and talk about Star Wars. I like the Rise of Skywalker, I don't think it a great movie but it was fun. I acknowledge people don't But we can't all like everything.

Once again thank you

As for name changes they happen all the time Annakin became Vader, Kal - El became Clark Kent then Super Man. There's multiple name changes in the bible. Don't have to agree or like it but it's not a new phenomenon created for Rey Skywalker it's a common trope. At least she became someone and not a wife / girlfriend of, barefoot in the kitchen looking after six kids. That is a positive and correct call by JJ. Am glad Daisy sees it that way too. After TLJ, TRoS was a delightful. Thank You Mr Abrams although bringing a dead guy back after thirty years? A bit unwise :wall: But long live the hero's Rey / Finn / Poe. Lover of heroes hater of bad guys!!!!
