Strange New Worlds Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - General Discussion Thread

Star Trek tends to not have good seasons. General rule of thumb, a series doesn't get great till there is a hair change. Luckily, Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds are exceptions. Pike's hair is already kind of out of control.

The original series was good from its first season. It was probably the best of its three seasons.

It will depend on future appearances, but all the new Gorn elements they wrote this season felt a bit much to me.

The Gorn are now basically smarter and more infectious versions of the Xenomorphs from Alien mixed with the Raptors from Jurassic Park.

Newly hatched Gorns can also breed simply by spitting slime on you, lol. Also, medical scans can't detect that you are spawning Gorn hatchlings.

Hemmer's death was emotional though.

I prefer the Gorn to be played practically by people in a rubber suit instead of pure CGI creations. They could just be updated with modern makeup. The 60s version had more personality and felt more real.

For updated Klingons or Andorians we didn't get aliens rendered entirely by CGI so why should the Gorn be done that way? They seem more mindless now even though they tell us they're extremely intelligent. They're just soulless dinosaurs now instead of lizard men or women with character.

At the very least it should've been a guy in a mo cap suit.

I can't remember, were they supposed to be fully developed in that ep? Or were saying they were adolescent Gorn or something? If the latter then there's still plenty of room to marry them with the TOS version.

We still haven't seen the new fully adult Gorn. My understanding is that these were hatchlings. I think La'An mentioned if they were fully grown and developed they wouldn't have stood a chance. But these newborns were basically already apex predators.

We'll see what they do with it. I think what was interesting about the original Gorn appearance was that they were presented as barbarous and violent, but they also believed the Federation had encroached on their territory. Kirk realized that answering their attack with violent retaliation was wrong. Kirk was humble enough to admit that the Federation had maybe made a mistake and played a part in this as well.

I guess what I mean is, I don't want Gorn to be knockoffs of Farscape's Scarrans.

I like that Ortegas gets her own log segment, and how excited she is about the landing party.

Damn, I love the cast for this show. One of the better Trek ensembles I can recall in a while.

The Oscar-nominated (“Hester Street”) and Emmy-winning (twice, for “Taxi) actress will recur as Pelia, described as a “highly educated and intelligent” engineer who “suffers no fools.” Per a release, “Pelia solves problems calmly and brusquely, thanks to her many years of experience.”

Any ideas what the pin is next to her insignia, kind of matches her earrings too.

Anyway I see they are going to Rigel VII, just saw this vid from The Cage and it's in 4k

Interesting, the footage looks a bit strange in 4K.

Yeah I am watching it on a 144hz monitor, but it looks really smooth if you crank it up to 2160p. It looks really good to me, but it can have that soap opera affect depending on your screen. But I think it looks amazing.

Wow, I missed all of this amid the D23 stuff. Awesome news about Carol Kane. And very cool that they’re already far enough into filming that they have a clip ready. Aww, #Poortegas. :( Hopefully she’ll get to go with a landing party before the season ends.

Season 2 wrapped filming about a month or so ago.
