General Trek Talk Official Star Trek Discussion Thread

I just wish they would do another show soon, I want another Dominion war type of saga, maybe this time the federation is in shambles and they face a new enemy from a different galaxy.

How many times do you guys watch your star trek DVDs, I have all of the TNG,DS9,VOY, and Enterprise but have seen all of them about 1 year ago and I am thinking of watching from TNG to Enterprise again but is it too soon should I just wait another year and leave 2 year gap?

I can't afford the $3000 bucks for the Star Trek DVDs. Heck, I can't even afford the $600-$800 that it costs on Ebay

I only have some DS9 dvds, but what I tend to do is go in and out of phases. Sometimes I really want to watch a old fashioned trek episode, sometimes I don't... I tend to work in 6 month to a year cycles. I'll try and watch my trek dvds once every year at least

I saw in a caption in the paper today, that Cate Blanchet has auditioned for the new trek prequel. Any thoughts on that? She's a pretty solid actress, any ideas as to what her role is?

Haha, I have to do that a lot as well :p

Um, not sure how I feel about her. She is a good actress, but from a personal point of view I just can't stand the woman :(

What I was thinking was go the reverse of how they do it normally, and kick off a new ST series with a movie. Have it set on the Titan with Riker as the captain, introduce the new crew with their first big mission, then start up the new series based on that.
Bad idea. Unless you recast Riker. As Jonathan Frakes isn't a good enough actor to carry a captains seat. Plus he prefers to direct these days anyway (he knows he's not a great actor either ;)). Or you make it so that all the other characters on the Titan carry the show. Very against Trek-formula and Trek hates to go against formula. You'll notice that Rikers part in First contact and Insurection movies were smaller. He directed both of those movies.

I doubt I'll ever have need of that. Space puts on TOS, TNG, VOY, and Enterprise every week day. And Spike puts on TNG and DS9.

I always liked it better when Pricard gave a great speech took a big risk, and saved the peace without even a sinlge explosion. it was always much more inspiring than the battle cry and blown up enemy.

then WE are on differnt wave lenghths lol

I think a military star trek will be good for one it'll be a change
and I loved the episode of DS9 when Quark went to see NOD on a Planet and they were attacked by the Domenian..

that was what sold me into trying to make a show

I actually Like Jonathan Frakes. I was mostly thinking that since it would be starting with the movie, you'd use him as the bridge. Like instead of having a movie with an entirely new crew, you'd have Riker to tie it to the standard universe.

yeah but that would be like having a spider-man movie without spider-man. I could understnad a different sci-fi series doing that, but there is no reason for a war focused sci-fi series to be star trek.

Star Trek was a socialistic show with a social message. Taking it away would be like taking the spider-man out of the spider-man movies.

Bill Nye, the Science Guy marries author Liza Mundy. And it's "Star Trek news" because the ceremony was officiated by The Doctor. :sus :ST:

Ah I’m so jealous. I would love The Doctor to officiate mine!

nice, I was looking for a general discussion thread. bump

Clearly, I need to pay more attention to IDW's solicitations.

With the sad news about the passing of Manny Coto and with Star Trek: Enterprise being reevaluated over the last couple of years and it's mention/Easter Eggs in Star Trek (2009) Star Trek: Discovery, Picard and Strange New Worlds.

Maybe it's time for Season 5 of Star Trek: Enterprise in a form of a Short Trek, Mini Series or a Long Trek?

Enterprise needs a proper ending: to show the formation of the Federation (and not just that tease in the finale) end of the Temporal Cold War (who was Future Guy!!!) maybe show the Earth/Romulan War (Star Trek: The Beginning) and justice for Trip!!!

What you think Guys?

On a side note he directed Star Kid (loved that film as a kid, was like a kid friendly version of Guyver meets Power Rangers) and created Odyssey 5 a short lived Show from 2002 which I also loved!!!

RIP Manny Coto

What Star Trek needs is a move forward. We have been stuck in the past for multiple series, ever since Enterprise. All the shows are just trying to tie into the older shows. We need a progression not a reinvention of the older shows. Star Trek was the look at the future now it is just a prequel nostalgia series over and over. In Picard season 3 we finally made it to the 25th century. Take what Picard season 3 did and move forward another 50 to 100 years. You can still have some cameos from older cast because of the longer life spans in Star Trek, but you will be moving Star Trek forward.

We need to get back to exploration and stop with all the time travel or alternate timelines. Keep it simple, exploration and seeing what is out there. Back in TNG they had only explored about 19% of the galaxy, and after Voyager we really haven't explored more. There is still so much to explore.

On the other hand, "when" a series takes place doesn't really matter.

You have your future series now, what is there to complain about?

What Star Trek needs is a move forward.

I agree. Currently, Star Trek relies heavily on the hook of nostalgia. I think this self-referential fan fiction only works well for Lower Decks, which has its serious themes but isn’t trying to be a serious drama show.

TOS and TNG had about a million writers taking the Kobayashi Maru test with their manuscript submissions, and that gave those series so much variety that even some of the howler episodes stood out in a good way with their own kind of charm. Modern dramatic Trek aims for continuity and nostalgia and accomplishes blandness.

Where?

The sustainability of a franchise certainly is moving on. Definitely looking forward to whenever we get the next in line after Picard....Legacy would be great.

I am not sure what "future series" you are talking about. I don't watch the animated shows. So if you are talking about them, I am not interested in those. Currently the only live action show is Strange New Worlds, and that is a spinoff from another prequel series. When a series takes place actually does matter because sets and budgets are real. If you mean it doesn't matter to you than that is a different thing.

Modern Trek has fewer episodes, so I don't really like fillers in short series. Maybe 1, but that is stretching it in a 10 episode season. If the writers can't fill 10 episodes, give or take, then they really aren't up for the task of writing Star Trek.

Yeah I can't wait to see where we go next.

Starfleet Academy is indicated to be set post Discovery, so there is your future series. Unless it also doesn't meet whatever nebulous standards you have.

All I have seen about "moving forward" is about concern about the goddamn timeline. Star Trek is not this grand narrative that "must move forward". It is a collection of small stories, tied together by characters we see week to week. Yes, there have been longer story line threads. Yes, there are galaxy level threats.

When a show takes place really doesn't matter. Create a whole new cast of characters, place it in the vague timeline between the movies and TNG, and it could still be great. I find the "move forwards" types are just as much motivated by nostalgia, as they seem to want to know where things are now.
