Geoff Johns DCE's Chief Creative Officer talks Green Lantern movie.

DC has announced amongst other things Geoff Johns new job as Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment.
And here's the quote where he talks specifically about the GL movie and his input as new CCO.


"Let’s all let this sink in a little more: Martin Campbell of Casino Royale is directing Green Lantern. And over the last few months, I’ve met with Ryan Reynolds to talk all-things Green Lantern, I’ve worked closely with Green Lantern producer Donald Deline and screenwriter Michael Goldenberg on the script (Aw yeah, Kilowog!) and I’ve realized that the Green Lantern comics and film and everything growing out of them (wait until you see what!) is only the beginning of what DC Entertainment has coming our way ..."

This as far as I know had yet to be confirmed untill now, his involvement with the script and the producer seem quite extensive. And him and Reynolds have discussed Green Lantern.
Knowing Johns is involved with this production even if in a minor capacity, I think bodes very well for this movie.

Johns is awesome. Rebirth is probably my favorite Green Lantern story, ever. Glad to know that he's so heavily involved in the new film.

for those who want a theory why DC movies (besides Batman) have been lagging (prior to this annoucement), this article has an interesting news bit:

Gregory Noveck, currently SVP Creative Affairs for DC, and their main Hollywood connection, will report to Geoff Johns; who tangentially, Noveck was instrumental in getting Johns involved with the Hollywood side of things. Noveck was widely seen as a fall guy for DC’s halting efforts in the movie business, (a story in Variety about all the changes last September did all but finger him directly), so his future with the company remains clouded at best.

Intially, Noveck was brought in prior to the formation of DC Entertainment, as a liaison between the two factions. Since now things are different and DC plays a more active role with WB, there's not much of a need for Noveck. You have Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, and the entire DC crew to work with, so sadly they don't need the middle man.

that's true. but at the same time, I think animated films were just a natural progression. WB has dabbled with animated DVD movies since The Matrix Reloaded, and with Marvel making them as well, it only made sense why DC decided to get into the market. I don't know how instrumental he was, but yeah, it's sad to see this happening to him.

Same thing with Green Lantern, Jonah Hex, and The Losers..movies that he's involved with. I feel like it more due to the DC Summit of 2008, Dark Knight's success, and the formation of Marvel Studios that led to the greenlight of those movies, not so much Noveck.

At one time, he was hailed as the hope for DC comics in Hollywood; the Avi Arad of DC. But yet, we didn't hear too much from him.

But I think he is quite irrelevant now with Geoff Johns in the picture; a man who started off in Hollywood as Richard Donner's assistant to DC's Diamond of the Rough. He knows both movies and comics, so obviously he's a better fit.

Kiel Phegley: Geoff, this is the kind of gig that you've been moving towards for a long time, even though you may have never thought you'd have a title as heady as CCO to go along with your plans for the DC characters. What does this new title change for you from your comics work to your growing film slate on a day-to-day basis?

Geoff Johns: In a weird way, it just kind of continues me on the path of what I've been doing and takes me to the next level. I've been spending the last few months working on the Green Lantern film with [executive producer] Donald De Line and the crew over there, and I think this is just literally taking what I've wanted to do and what I've tried to do since I started here and push it all to the next level – everything outside comics and everything inside comics. Again, I've loved working with Dan for all these years, and Jim brings a natural amount of talent. Add that to everyone else on this team, and it's kind of a new day. But for me personally, I'm just excited because what I get to do is work with DC Entertainment all day, and that's all I want to do. I'm continuing the same path I've already been on.

Is Legion still in? A John Stewart cameo? More training scenes?

If all else, the first draft was enjoyable but the dialog was a mixed bag besides Sinestro, the humor is sitcomy (instead of being clever like Jon Fav's Iron Man) and the third act is kinda messy. The third act was all over the map and I questioned some of the motives of the characters, but I'm certain that things have been ironed out.

I think either Campbell or the studio wanted a screenwriter who was more familiar with adapting source material, as opposed to asking Guggenheim Green and Berlanti to do further rewrites. Goldenberg was probably the person they were most comfortable with doing the rewrites because he did Contact and Harry Potter 5 for the studio previously. Judging by the way how Johns is working with Goldenberg, they're probably smoothing out some of the structural problems to make the story more cinematic.

all cool news, and i am sure between campbell, the new writer and johns they have probably fixed any of the bad issues with the early drafts for the more recent ones. Totally cant wait to see what comes of everything.

No thanks. That would not look good on a live-action costume.

Like batman's suit, what works in the comics wouldn't translate well to live action, but the black rubber suit style is very cool and works great for the movies. Of course this isn't as drastic hopefully, but they need to just go with green gauntlets.

actually i dont see why it wouldnt. White gloves are not that hard to make and look good. Plus i am sure they could find a way to have them for like one scene or something. Like some end cremony scene or something.

It depends the material they're using. The contrast between sudden white colored gloves and then green and possibly black would look kind of off.

. Legion seems to have been reverted to an robotic body habited by the hive-mind of a race with a grudge against the Guardians of the Universe, judging by Hector's reworked origin.

. The final battle might take place in Oa, but nothing's confirmed.

The changes seem for the better....especially with the shifting to a darker tone, the increasing of the role of Kilowog, and the training scenes in Oa, should be fun to watch.

The final battle taking place on Oa makes sense of course.

I hope the execution of Legions character is done well and not in a silly way.
