The Force Awakens Post-TFA: Rank the seven Star Wars movies (NO SPOILERS)

2. Return of the Jedi
3. The Force Awakens/Revenge of the Sith(tie...for now after only 1 viewing. Force Awakens is the better film but I DO love Sith. Undecided).
4. New Hope(I never loved it the way most do. I saw Jedi first as a child so maybe that has something to do with it).
5. Attack of the Clones
6. Phantom Menace(which I can barely sit through save the Maul fight at the end).

I had to many issues with Force Awakens to rank it in my top 3. JJ basically copy and pasted and rehashed the plot of A New Hope.

I scored each movie from 1-10 based on:

Being iconic
Replay value
Emotional resonance
Intellectual resonance
Highlights (great moments)

Then I averaged these scores into a final score for each movie.

My personal ranking is as follows:

1) ROTJ - 9
2) ANH - 8.4
3) ESB/TFA - 8.4 (tie)

4) ROTS - 5.4
5) AOTC - 3.8
6) TPM - 3.2

The Phantom Menace was where we see the Jedi in their prime for the first time and it was the most authentic out of the prequels.

I think it's 3rd best for me right now. I can't see the first two ever dropping, but having no Ewoks or otherwise cutesy stuff in it (in a bad way) put Force Awakens a hair above Return of the Jedi for me.

Also Han having an actual reason for being there (unlike ROTJ, were he's just kind of there, just to be there) helps elevate it over ROTJ for me as well. Plus Ford seemed more invested this time around as well.

There's not going to be a Star Wars film that's going to rank above the original trilogy. It just won't happen. That was a once in a lifetime experience.

That said, TFA is the follow up that the prequels should have been. Interesting characters, and that are relatable, and an emotional depth that was never seen in the prequels.

After the second viewing, I'm still keeping this tied at #3 with ROTJ. It's a more solid tie in my mind. There's times when I put it on par with ANH, but I need this film to marinate past more viewings over time. I probably also need it in context with the rest of its trilogy.

I was... surprisingly disappointed by the new movie, and I hate feeling like this. I guess that's what two years of hype and great marketing do to you. Should've kept my expectations in check.
