First Avenger The Official Captain America Critic's Review Thread

So basically, from the reviews, Captain America is Iron Man. A solid film to pretty good film that's entertaining and doesn't take any chances and settles for merely being required reading for the Avengers...

By the same token, X-M: FC got great reviews, everyone I know who saw it really liked it, but clearly word-of-mouth didn't help at all. You can blame it on people being burnt on Wolverine or X-3, or a crowded June, but sometimes, good movies could have everything going for it, and just don't make the money they deserve.

Rolling Stone gave this a bad review?

I can't find anything on RollingStone.com for Travers' review on Capt. America, and since I follow him on Twitter I haven't seen any tweets from Travers regarding this movie yet. As far as I know, he hasn't reviewed the movie.

VileOne, was there ample space left within the movies storyline in order to build a film around another WW2 adventure, would it even make sense?

Rotten Tomato is going to keep Cap at 40% with 5 reviews for a good while today, because first impression counts, and when the early birds sees that, the 40% will always stick in their minds.

I bet you they did that, so they could "TWEET" out that Captain America is "rotten" to their 390,000 followers.

Update:

And they just did exactly that!

I see the words #rotten 3 times already after only 5 reviews.

And it's working.

Just go to Twitter and you will see a lot of people Retweeting - RottenTomatoes' tweet and now saying that Captain America is rotten.

Just like everyday life, first impression always works. I work for a survey company, it's a big deal.

I think you guys give to much credit to RT and "reviews".

IMO its word of mouth that tanks a movie. I know that bad reviews don't help, but that wasn't what tanked Green Lantern. Regular people reviews are whats important, not critics. Sometimes they line up, sometimes they don't.

If Cap is a great movie and everyone who sees it tells people that then it will be fine. I'm just saying that critics are often the worst gauge ever about whether you will like a movie or not. They often feel the need to be overly elitist and snobby about them. Many just have a hard on for CBMs in general. I know a few people that think Cap is just a hokey, ridiculous movie without ever having seen it. I guess since Nolan didn't make it. Critics are often the same.
Word of mouth is a crucial factor certainly but it doesn't start having an effect for a few days. The opening weekend where you could do 1/3 of your business is dependant on marketing and any kind of indication on film quality.

Eh - in reading the few negative reviews so far, I'm not really surprised by what I'm seeing.
I knew from the beginning Captain America was going to rub some critics the wrong way for being too "square" and "earnest" in comparison with other recent superhero flicks.

The only seemingly insightful criticism that I've seen so far is the claim that some of the action sequences "lack suspense" (per critic Marshall Fine), but I'll have to see for myself to judge that. I'm also glad that the screening I'm seeing tonight is NOT in 3D, as that seems to annoy critics as well.

They haven't even put up Roger Moore's review yet. I think right now its all good, maybe this movie is just not for everyone? I'm sure some reviewers are sick of having to review comicbook movies too lol.

I think Capt. America will become fresh in the long run, and 5-6 reviews aren't enough to make any conclusion about this movie. I'm just surprised by the things that those negative reviews are using as their disapproval for the movie, such as the fact that Steve Rogers is too bland, or that Capt. America should've been a documentary for WWII. It seems to me that the critics are either too burnt-out on superhero movies, or they've become to cynical to see a man who has the purest intentions become the hero, instead of a torturous man with a dark past.

I don't think half of the positives we've seen have been put on RT yet, and now people are acting like it's the end of everything!

Chill out, relax... we'll see what happens.
I agree with Suzanne.

Why do so many people care about RT ??

If the movie is good and makes money its cool. Critics are often out of touch and have the same irrational preferences and proclivities in their movies as everyone else.
I think critics are becoming increasing unfair to comic book movies. Green Lantern and Transformers: Dark of the Moon in no way, shape or form deserved the RT ratings they got and even the criticisms seemed weak: "It was mindless entertainment", "It was just another superhero movie", etc. Most of these movies are written as mindless entertainment, and quite frankly Michael Bay has already proven with Dark of the Moon that audiences couldn't give to sh**s what critics say. I find critics often forget movies are generally supposed to be fun, not necessarily thought provoking, oscar-y, brooding, over dramatized takes of life. After The Dark Knight they've been incredibly critical of comic films that are not hyper-realistic and overly dramatized. Captain America shouldn't be a "different kind of comic film" or usher in some zeitgeist in the way comic movies are made. Leave that for a film like Watchmen or Sin City. Cap is a superhero, he wears a colorful costume and throws a shield at cartoonish bad guys. As long as the characters are handled well (with good actors), it's not filled with WTF moments, and it does a good job of condensing and presenting what happened in the comics then IMO you've done a good job.

I've always liked Rottentomatoes in general, but this policy of tweeting "fresh" or "rotten" before there is any kind of critic consensus is just plain wrong.

I absolutely agree. Not that it's a "news" organization but the way they present the rating has a tinge of glee to it. I'm not getting into the whole WB-ownership thing, but it doesn't seem very professional.

NO it is not Ironman LMAO!!!! i knew this was going to be a dud as it looks very generic and ever since Ironman 2 all Marvel movies have been generic as hell. All the avengers related movies have been campy romantic comedies full of cheesy dialog and horrible fight choreography. SMH...i hope this movie flops and Marvel stop prostituting their own franchises. Disney/Marvel was the worst thing to EVER occur. I'd have preferred DreamWorks/ Marvel. Disney's formula is tired and they have no innovative film making. I think Tim Burton is the only visually impressive Disney based director and sadly even Alice was mediocre as Disney are just money capitalizers and u can tell by their film delivery

They dont LOVE the mythos of these characters, they merely are hacks out for a weekend BO hit rather than making CLASSIC movies.

Going to have to go ahead and disagree with you.

Except that's not true at all - Thor and X-Men FC had a lot of good reviews.

sure, it doesn't look great. but that wasn't the only first impression going around last night on twitter. or even this morning.

"Chris Evans" and "Captain America" trended at #'s 5 and 6 on google last night because of the screening and at the time and there was an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. That first WOM is important.

6 Reviews in (2 fresh, 4 rotten) and the premier was last night .... yet you are already flapping your wings and know this movie is doomed.

You are such a hack. Only prostituting going on is with you and your ego-filled rants.

I don't understand why they don't post all the positive reviews?

I can't find the spill dot com review. Did they take it down?
