Disney Talking ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Reboot With ‘Deadpool’ Scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick

Even before World's End came out, I was kind of over the franchise, even with the reveal we got at the end of Dead Man's Chest. While I'd agree that, for my money, the first one is the best, there's a lot about Dead Man's Chest that I do like and I can rewatch that no problem- particularly the moments with Will on Davy Jones' ship and meeting his father.

But by the time we got On Stranger Tides...it felt like the franchise was already out of steam. the only thing I remember from that film was the romance between the mermaid and that guy (was he a preacher? I forget), which felt like it was only there because the film didn't have Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. Haven't even seen the one that came after that.

That's because it was out of steam. The script was weak and unimaginative, and Rob Marshall was not a good choice to direct the movie.

The franchise has a problem in that Jack Sparrow is the most popular and headlining character, but he’s awkwardly placed if treated as the overall premier lead for a movie. Will and Elizabeth provided a balance they can’t quite replicate yet; Stranger Tides had an anemic replacement, and while Dead Men Tell No Tales did better with Will Jr. and Ms. Barbossa, it still wasn't quite enough.

And funnily enough, I’d argue that Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa was the strongest part of both those films.

They need some new, compelling co-leads. I wouldn’t mind seeing them take the idea of Norrington from Dead Man’s Chest (disgraced but exceedingly competent career navy man) and trying to rework that into a new ally for Jack; really go for the biggest possible contrast you can, and give him an air of intensity and danger to compete with Jack’s unique type of danger.

I would actually really like that. Jack Davenport was great as Norrington!

If they could find a sensible way to bring him back and plausible reason for them to team up, I would be in to that. Maybe he comes back as a ghost with a warning of a new threat but only Jack can see him or something cos of some convenient magic amulet he's stolen.. I dunno but It would be great seeing them bounce off each other again.

Spot on.

I just saw Dead Man's Chest for the first time in over a decade, and I must say I kind of have to retreat on my criticism, because it was much better and much less a step down from the original than I remembered it to be.

Cool!

The only movie out of these I genuinely struggle to watch is On Stranger Tides. But even that it’s moments. And I thought the 5th movie was a big step up from that. Barbossa will be a loss, but the possible return of Davy Jones would make up for that.

Plus Depps personal life definitely had an effect on his performance in the last movie.

I'm curious to see what I'll think of At World's End when I'll rewatch it. And having seen the fourth one more recently, yeah, it's pretty boring and unremarkable. I haven't seen the fifth one yet.

On Stranger Tides is my least favorite of the bunch. Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane's Blackbeard are fun to watch in the little screentime that they're given, and the mermaid attack scene was cool but everything else about that movie was so boring.

At World's End is entertaining but it's insane how bloated that movie is. It's almost three hours long during a time when such a thing was practically unheard of for a blockbuster franchise outside of the Lord of the Rings films. It still kind of is today apart from the occasional The Dark Knight Rises or Avengers Endgame every so often. That just shows how much pull Jerry Bruckheimer had with Disney after the success of Curse of the Black Pearl.

I'm not overly fond of AWE, it kind of takes the fun out of itself as opposed to the last two for me, but I can respect its bonkers vision. Its problems are the same reason is why it's sort of endearing. It's better than the next two movies, and has aged well like the second film. The last two won't.

I don't get Disney's insistence on this franchise. The first one was an almost-masterpiece, yes, and Depp's performance in it was equally incredible. But it was lightning in a bottle. None of the following films, not even the ones in the "original" trilogy have been specially good and the last ones were complete wastes of time. Depp himself has phoned-in his Jack Sparrow performance since 2003 as well so I don't get why some think these movies are the way back into the spotlight, he should get a better project for that.

I mean, I get he feels like he's been robbed years of work due to his personal affairs and he's probably right but let's be fair here, people were bored with "Pirates" long before any of that.

The first one was a complete fluke. If you read the Disney Wars book about the company you'll find out they were horrified at what Depp was doing when they started seeing the dailies came in for that first film. Everyone at the company thought the film was doomed from the start. Pirates was frankly the last successful live action franchise the company actually created that didn't already have a Marvel or Lucasfilm logo in front of it. They can't get rid of it.

Disney has a pretty terrible track record of launching their own stuff. I think the recent animated films have been about it.

I really like AWE, never got a lot of the criticisms.

AWE had way too many plottwists and characters changing sides...
Though I really liked the opening in Singapoore and the „under the sea“ exile of Jack.
DMC was a great fun movie

Yeah I think AWE was just a bit overlong, but I like that it had a bit of a tragic ending and it is much better than On Stranger Tides.

BTW, does anyone know if they will be releasing the original 5 movies on 4K anytime soon?

Dead Men Tell No Tales is already available on 4K. Disney should have released the first four on 4K at the time but they were just getting into 4K releases in 2017 so they probably weren't ready. I assume they might just be holding out in the hopes that a new film is released in the near future. They'd look amazing in 4K.

Right I got the 5 movie blu Ray set but I agree they would look amazing in 4K, hope we get the rest soon.

DMC was a great fun movie
AWE showed that their storytelling ambitions were a bit too large for a single movie to wrap up all the lose ends; the different character arcs, conflicts, and subconflicts would fit better in something like a season of premium cable TV.

I still liked it personally, but the fact that each other heroic characters has an individual goal, plan for achieving that goal, and plan for manipulating others to achieve that goal is a *bit* much.

The biggest casualty of the sheer density of the plot wound up being Norrington. By any rights, Admiral Norrington, fresh off the most impressive bit of piracy in DMC, really could have been the main villain all on his own, and Davenport still had untapped potential in the role. But they had Beckett, they had Jones, and they still had to juggle the entire Black Pearl crew. So he wound up getting about five minutes of “meh” storyline, and acting as the double-doomed fool who makes the mistake of kissing a Elizabeth and holding his own sword (since literally everyone else who has either happen to them ends up dead in some way, shape or form.)

Honestly, they need to just shelve this. The 'Pirates' franchise is so 2003. Unless they do an entirely new take on it with new settings and characters, there's no reason to keep going back to that well.

That, and they’ve basically tried to do Pirates with other properties and failed...

Prince of Persia... Pirates style
Lone Ranger... Pirates style
And now? Jungle Cruise... Pirates style.

Oh well you could say that for everyone who tried to copy marvel and failed. The DCU, the Universal Monsters Dark Universe, the Men in Black movie with Hemsworth etc

I do love Curse of the Black Pearl a ton but the sequels fail miserably. Although, unlike you guys I think Stranger Tides was the best sequel I've seen. It wasn't up it's own ass pretending it's some grand epic. It's just a romp like Black Pearl was. Haven't seen the last one though .

As far as high adventure films go Black Pearl is pretty great. Not on par with Indy's original three films but just as good as Martin Campbell's Mask of Zorro and better than Sommers' The Mummy, which I still like a great deal.

Campbell should really direct the reboot, he's perfect for the Pirates franchise.
