Season 1, Episode 1: "Pilot" (SPOILERS)

Watched the episode via iTunes last night. Loved it. I think my interest has grown for Jordan and Jonathan and even Sarah, none of whom I expected to like. So only Jordan has powers? I like that he has social anxiety disorder. It makes him relatable and Superman relatable. Also, I thought all the acting was good, particularly the kids.

We saw Jonathan exhibit super strength as a kid

Luthor's taunts of "I eventually arrived here, where I learned you were here too" and "Not as fast as I thought" point to this being a lower-powered Byrne-style Superman, although in this case not a reboot but in a universe off to the side of Luthor's original home. How the Arrowverse fits into this, I don't know, but there's no reason it (including Kara and her cousin) can't still exist.

Finished watching the pilot. It was ok but a little slow in places. I would've preferred a brighter and more colourful cinematography similar to Stargirl than this slightly sepia washed out look. Also it was a little teen angsty in places and began to drag.

I was hoping for a bit more Superman. He seemed to be used rather sparingly even compared to how much Supergirl would appear per episode. Also I felt this was more of a reboot and wondered if this was even connected to the rest of the Arrowverse. Does Kara exist in this? Is Superman the only hero on earth? Some acknowledgment of his previous adventures would've been nice.

And does Supergirl's Lex Luthor even exist for this Superman? We seem to have a completely different one here named Captain Luthor who is black.

The bit at the beginning with the Fleischer suit where he said "thanks, my mom made it for me" sounded like a direct nod to the pilot of Lois and Clark where Dean Cain said the exact same thing after he saved the space shuttle and appeared as Superman for the very first time.

It certainly has the Byrne reboot concept of Superman getting his ass kicked ( and nearly killed) at the first opportunity, just like Byrne's first issue.
They need to do a little bit of world building and explain how Luthor's tech seems to be able to overpower Supes, even before he stabs him wtg the K knife. If this show is about Superman angering over his sons and getting his ass whooped all the time I'm going to lose interest quick. Not that Superman can or should win all the time , he should struggle.

But to make him losing seem shocking or have emotional weight, he needs to win a few first. Even Goyer understood that in Man of Steel.

Hoechlin really is the best Superman since Reeve, and he proved it again in the pilot. I have not been much of a fan of BT Lois but in the pilot she really was excellent. Considering how awful recent Superman/Clark/Lois has been, it was refreshing.

I also found the story to be slow at times, but actually enjoyed that about the pilot. Not a huge fan of the teen angle, but the casting of the teens was excellent, especially the Kent boys.

I find I am not that much interested in the teen angle, or what may be the mystery of the first season, but I might become more interested in the future .

Also the Superman theme at the end is unmemorable compared to the theme he had in Supergirl. They should've kept that as it sounded heroic and hopeful. I wonder if this version of Superman is now slightly less hopeful and optimistic but more of a grimmer or darker show.

So I wasn’t planning to watch S&L but I lost a bet with my cousin. Being an honorable person and the fact that my cousin was going to ask me some random detail meant I watched the whole thing.

It didn’t do well on my personal TV show test. The test is pretty simple does the show keep my attention or do I reach for my phone or the book I’m reading, bonus points are given if I find myself rewinding to watch a scene again. I lasted 20 minutes before I went for my phone, deliberately put the phone away then lasted another 20 minutes before I went for it again. Since I know I have a bias against the show I even put and kept the phone in the kitchen and book in the bedroom so I had to get up if I wanted one of them, I don’t normally do that.

As a reference for CW shows. Never once in 106 episodes of Supergirl have I reached for my phone or book even if it’s within reach. I haven’t loved every episode but every one has kept my attention, the scale with Supergirl episodes is if/how much I rewind. Black Lightning and to my initial surprise Charmed come in second with the vast majority of episodes keeping my attention and a fair bit of rewinding. Flash and Batwoman have episodes that fail to keep my attention but most do and some rewinding happens. The cutoff where I still watch would be Riverdale with just over half the episodes keeping my attention.

This pilot is honestly my favorite Superman movie. Way better than MOS.

Same. I loved this one. At least this did justice to the way Jonathan (and Martha) should die. Natural cause. There is no better way to teach Clark about human mortality and that he can't save everyone. And most importantly Jonathan didn't die in a way that insulted the viewers intelligence. This Jonathan Kent taught Clark to use his powers.

Yeah Crisis re-wrote their history so that they got married and had kids in their 20's.

Clark proposed to Lois at the end of Elseworlds, at the Fortress Of Solitude. With Lois wearing the same white dress Margot Kidder wore in Superman The Movie. That was not in the opening montage. They were also at Argo when the kids were born. Not in the montage in this one. Lex was also very prominent in Supergirl post-Crisis. Hell, he rewrote history for himself. Which leads me to believe this is either a new CWverse or outside of the old CWverse.

My highly scientific ranking is that the pilot is really good, I enjoyed the two title characters and thought it showed potential. Plus it doesn't look like I shot it on my phone in the middle of a cloudy day against the same three buildings in downtown Vancouver, so that is a big positive. If I didn't know any better, I would think this came out of the DC streaming service with stuff like Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing and... that other one. So, yeah, good stuff, looks promising. Don't know how long they can keep any of it up, but I liked this quite a bit more than I tend to with CW's DC output - particularly... some.

Although I'm excited to see more flashbacks of Superman's earlier todays, I'm hoping that we also end up getting some Lois-centered flashbacks as well. I'd like to see more of her past interactions with her sister and General Lane.

Why is it that Tyler's Superman only gets more comic accurate looking boots when he's not wearing his main costume on the show?lol

Haven’t watched the full episode yet but I did catch the opening. Gotta say, I really liked what I saw.

Production value looked excellent from what little I’ve seen

Never thought I’d say that about a CW show lol

Seeing Tyler and his stunt double wear two different Superman suits makes me imagine Earth-Prime Superman and an Earth-2 Superman team up multiverse style.

In the flashbacks to Lois and Clark's wedding, they should've shown that Clark slept with Lucy Lane (the maid of honor) the night before and now they're all stuck in a time loop and forced to relive the same day again and again. :o

I watched it again this morning. I liked it more this time. My main problem is with the Jordan character. He's still too damn angsty angry (I couldn't stand to be around him in real life)....Supes needs to send him off to the Phantom Zone for a while.

That's very likely to happen anyway at some point in this series given the way CW shows progress. Jordan will struggle with his powers and rebel against his father and Lex will take advantage of that to poison his mind. Then at the end of one season Clark will be forced to banish him to the Phantom Zone for his own good and the good and safety of all those around him even though it kills him inside to have to do that to his son.

Martian Manhunter (or maybe it was Jonz's father) had to do something similar to his brother in Supergirl because of the danger his brother posed to everyone.

I think I’m with everyone else here that this was an awesome pilot and the two leads were stellar. The teen angst was a little much and Jordan is in danger of being obnoxiously annoying. I would’ve loved a bit more Tomasi influence but what we got was great.

I would've preferred the tone a little more adult like Lois and Clark than teen angst orientated like Smallville. I suppose you're going to get some of that with them having children though. It just feels like we've watched this part of the show many times before whether on the OC, Dawson's Creek, etc.
