Season 1 / Episode 3: What If... The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?

This was by far the best episode of three. Really dark sure, but I actually did not see that twist coming and Michael Douglas was great in this episode.

This is the kind of stuff I want to see more of out of this show instead of the rehashing of past Marvel movies because this was the most interesting storyline they have come up with so far.

Also, I really enjoyed Lake Bell as Black Widow aswell.

My favourite episode so far, though I still really enjoyed last week’s as well, which I forgot to post my review for!

I’m getting more used to the animation now, so I’m liking it a lot more. The voice acting from Jackson, Bell, Gregg, Hiddleston, Grillo, Ruffalo, and Douglas were all great, the only ones that sounded off were Renner and Betty’s voice. I laughed pretty hard at Coulson noticing how attractive Thor was throughout the episode, and Loki coming to Earth to avenge his brother was an interesting twist.

I really liked the twist at the end with the villain, but was so surprised by him being easily beaten by Fury, who it turned out was actually Loki. Made a lot more sense! So was Loki’s final moment, which makes me wonder if he is actually

President Loki.

9/10 for me!

The heartbreaking thing for me were not the on screen deaths. But the off screen consequences we didn't see.

Betty witnessing all was really sad. Imagine what was Pepper and Happy's reaction to Tony dying (and what that meant regarding Hammer and Vanko). Jane wasn't so close to Thor at that point, but it sure must've felt terrible. Plus how bad Odin must have felt knowing he basically sent his son to death. Widow hadn't go public, so it's possible Yelena never finds out what happened to her sister. And Clint's family :(

One thing that i've been having a lot of fun with in this series is the action. Of course this being animated gives the creators many different possibilities and i feel like we've seen some fresh, interesting and fun stuff so far. There's also weight to the action moves and hits which is great.

While it's nice seeing characters like Captain Carter, Star-Lord T'Challa, Black Widow or Fury(Loki) let loose, i'm looking forward to see how cool and wild the action scenes could be with Doctor Strange and Thor who have a very different set of powers and abilities.

Also, considering Loki and his army are a worldwide threat, I'm guessing in this timeline the Avengers lineup could end up being:

Captain Marvel
Captain America
Black Panther
Okoye
War Machine

Less likely, but maybe:

Wong
Talos
Soren
Rumlow
Melinda May

I also found it interesting that it was confirmed both Nat and Clint were considered part of the Initiative from the beginning. I always thought they became part of it because of the circumstances.

I was thinking Parker too, but then I'm not sure whether Sony would allow it. I also figure there is no Doctor Strange here, but there is an ancient one, and Loki is kind of a mystical threat?

I can see T'Challa back for sure, if the two episodes are connected (same multiverse?) but Okoye?

Isn't Peter like 10 years old and still no powers when Fury's Big Week happens?

The Ancient One didn't interfere at all during The Battle of New York, and Loki was also the enemy there.

I thought of Okoye (and honestly, probably all Doras and warriors from Wakanda) cause they're a nation that wouldn't surrender to anyone. And Loki wouldn't give up on them.

He would be yeah, but then Fury's revolution is going to take a couple of years to set into motion.

New York was one battle. Loki now rules Earth (short of Wakanda- maybe). I doubt the mystics would willingly sit this one out.

Oh I don't know. Loki likes a challenge, but he's no fool. If Wakanda kept to themselves, I think he's happily overlook them. It's not as if he wouldn't otherwise have enough subjects. He's just practically enslaved 7billion people.

Fun detail that got pointed out that I missed myself:
Hope died on a mission in Odessa. That's where Black Widow had an encounter with Winter Soldier where she took a bullet according to dialogue in CA:tWS. Alexander Pierce was shown to be involved in the mission as well on the screen in the episode. So presumably Hope got sent on that mission instead of Natasha and killed by Bucky on orders of Pierce.

That being said this episode could have been called "What If Hope Van Dyne became a SHIELD agent" too.
Not really, as that would've ruined the mystery of what the change in the timeline was and who was killing Avengers

The screenwriter confirmed that.

A.C. Bradley: Then the notion became, what if Hope Van Dyne had become a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent? I think it’s still in the final cut of the episode, is there a line that she was killed outside Odessa? Like so many months ago?

Yes, it’s still there!

A.C. Bradley: Yeah, go watch The Winter Soldier. No one’s figured out that easter egg. I don’t think anyone at Marvel figured out that easter egg.

Now there's an interesting catch!

Well here's the thing about Peter. Remember the kid that Tony saved at the Stark Expo in Iron Man 2?

1000

Canonically, that's supposed to be Peter. And if Tony is already dead in that universe, then there's no one to stop Vanko's plan of unleashing the drones on the Expo. In which case, bye bye lil' Peter. :csad:

It's also possible that Rhodey would have died in that as well, unless of course the whole thing was called off in the wake of Loki taking over the Earth.

I saw someone pointing out online that Hank Pym said that Thor’s death was a “favor”. The question is to who? What kind of favor? Did he got something in return maybe…
Doesn't sound like it.
When Hank says it was a favor it sounds far more like he's saying it was better for Thor to die than to live as an asset of Shield.
Like a deranged mercy kill thing.

I would've thought the Stark Expo would have been canceled once Tony Stark died.
I'm sure even Vanko had to take at least a couple days to see where he was going now. He wanted revenge on Stark and now he's dead. Hammer could take over as leader in the weaponry business. No point in both of them messing with the Expo, if it were to continue.

And yeah, once space vikings start taking over the world, I feel like you kinda put a hold on everything else lol.

Sure, unless SHIELD kept his death under wraps until the situation was under control. The sheer amount of domino effect possibilities created in this episode are mind boggling.

Now I want to see Hammer trying to ally himself with the new space viking overlords...

This was a good ass episode. And you guys calling the domino effects of this are blowing my mind. This would've been screwed up if this happened in the mainline.

It was interesting seeing Jackson/Fury and Douglas/Hank interact after all this time.

Michael Douglas was especially impressive. I loved how action packed this one was too. So far I've been pleasantly surprised by this show. It just keeps getting better and better.
I was also really impressed with Douglas' voice acting. I hope he's in more episodes down the line, and honestly just want to see him doing more animated work.

Pretty fun episode. Anything with Widow is usually good in my book and this one did not disappoint except her death.

We got A LOT of Marvel characters which was great. I was a little confused that Thor could be killed by an arrow. I know Odin sent him to Earth and all but I figured he'd still leave some type of durability in his son since he didnt want him to die.

I just started the episode but DAMN this voice actress sounds like she borrowed ScarJo’s vocal chords.
Yeah Lake Bell killed I loved her as Poison Ivy on the HQ series, fun fact this is not Lake's first time playing Natasha she played her in an episode of Robot Chicken but she did not sound nearly as similar to Scarlett as she played the character in What If?.

Much better than the last two. It's a fun idea rather than a dull character swap. A bit rushed but it felt like a much more proper episode. Shame the animation can't be helped though, this is pretty visually unappealing.

Loved the episode.
What if #2 was more fun but this was a better episode.
