oh no please dont tell me this movie sucks :(
ive never liked the character of green lantern nor did the trailers look too original... but i love martin campbell..

the reviews ive been reading are the complete opposite of what ive come to love from martin campbells films... how can the direcctor of casino royale, goldeneye, mask of zorro, and recently edge of darkness make such an ungrounded film thats extremely cheesy?? :(

at worst i was expecting reviews similar to speed racers where the critics just didnt like the intensely cg colorful visuals.. but every review here is trashing a million different things.

and the people here saying its not as bad as jonah hex lol ..thats when you know it sucks

We should start a betting pool on whether or not it'll get to 10 good reviews on RT before it gets to 30 bad reviews.
Right now we are at 8 fresh 28 rotten.

Place your bets!

Well this is kinda depressing. I really wanted to be wrong about this movie, but honestly, who didn't, at least on some level, see this coming the moment they started casting this thing with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively (with Justin Timberlake a runner-up for Hal)? I certainly don't remember the general fanbase being particularly thrilled about that when it happened, yet it seems like we all talked ourselves into giving them the benefit of the doubt because hope springs eternal for the fanboy/fangirl community. Well, we can keep making excuses all day about how critics just don't get the Green Lantern mythology or are going through "superhero fatigue" but the truth is, imo, the evidence was there from the very early stages: that this was a lazy, "safe" effort, which would therefore produce a subpar film.

That said, I'm still gonna see the movie first chance I get next week before dismissing it completely. Who knows, maybe these low expectations will help me to enjoy it. I just hope this doesn't kill the chances for other non-Bats/Supes DC properties to make their debut. :(
Timberlake was second in line? Warner Bros. just doesn't get it. They really don't. It's like they're trying to take a shortcut to make a really epic film...and you can't do that. Spend the time, find the right people to make your movie come together. Marvel Studios should have taught them that by now.

And there were reports of yet another kid, think I heard this on IMDB, who absolutely loved the film and was so interested in Hector Hammond's character that he kept asking his parents curious questions as to if what he was seeing was really real or possible.

The different reasons part? That's the aspect that confuses me and seems to be in every negative review. For example: some say Ryan Reynolds is the saving grace of the film, others say his performance was horrible. Some say Saarsgard is phenomenal and steals the show, others say his performance is cringe worthy. Some say the effects were bland, others say they were the heart of the film. And for the sake of simplifying things, just look at it as - those rival statements come from negative reviews... all these reports really have me  , I've never heard this many conflicting reports. It's like every theater was given an entirely different film. What exactly is going on? There's no detailed general consensus in any review. Even the negative reviews list pros that other reviews have as negative, then vice-versa. How can Saarsgard be cringe worthy, yet steal the show? How can Reynolds be the saving grace, yet have a horrible performance? It's just, I'm unable to reach any detailed conclusion from any review basically.

Hangover 2, it was easy for example, every critic and audience member who didn't like it had the exact same reasons and found the exact same pros in it. Here? A negative element can be a positive element and a positive element can be a negative element in just negative reviews... in the words of Jim Stark ''you're tearing me apart!''

That's the thing, there's something seriously wrong with a movie if there isn't even a consensus of what's wrong with it. It's like everything is one extreme or the other. With Thor the general complaint was that the Earth bound second act is weak, IM2 too much Avengers stuff, Superman Returns not enough action and too nostalgia driven, for GL the issues vary depending on who you talk to, in that sense if no-one can agree on what's wrong then you've got a film with severe problems. I've never seen a reaction to a film like this.

I predicted this movie wouldn't do well critically.

and I'm disappointed this is true

:csad:

In Brightest Day, in Blackest Night...critics think this movie Bites.

I'm not surprised. The film never looked too good.

Hello all. Long time since my last post. Just thought I'd post my review of the movie.

I saw it last night and it was the first showing in my country. Let me say first that I am a HUGE Green Lantern fan. I got hooked ever since the Rebirth story. When the movie was announced, it was like a dream to me - I never thought I'd see the day. I've been following the development of this movie very closely. I was happy about all the announcements - yes, including Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. I was also pretty interested in the choice of Martin Campbell as director - seeing that I enjoyed almost all of his movies, especially The Mask of Zorro.

I always thought that Green Lantern was a big opportunity to replicate the Star Wars phenomena in cinema if done right. This was DC's and Warner's opportunity to truly shine (no pun intended) and trigger their version of the movie DC Universe. Up until last week, everything seemed fine. I really expected that this was a sure hit. How could it not be? Everything seemed in place and just in the right order. They weren't cheap in the budget. They hired the right people. The production designs were too good to be true. Heck, they brought in Geoff Johns himself! Not to mention how many times they reiterated that they were staying true to the source material - and everything I've seen suggested that that was the case. Even when many fans criticized the special effects, I always gave them the benefit of the doubt and knew it was too early in the game.

But then the reviews started pouring in. Not even the "positive" ones sounded overly optimistic. Right then I started to worry. I'm a movie fan in general, so I knew that wasn't a good sign. Then I said to myself "maybe it's not a movie made for the critics to appreciate and at the very least, we - the fans - will enjoy it for what it is." I told myself going to the movie with low expectations would make me appreciate anything I see. I had to watch it. Been waiting for this day for years and I've been hyping it to family members, friends and colleagues. After all, it is a hard-selling concept, so much like Transformers, it won't be everyone's cup of tea. If I got anything like Transformers (even Transformers 2) I would have been fine with it.

Let me say I was VERY disappointed. My heart is actually broken. They kept on referencing Star Wars whenever they got the chance. They kept showing us alien designs to get us excited. They fooled us all. I can't trust what film makers say any more. Everything I love about the Green Lantern mythos is NOT in the movie. I don't know whom they were targeting with this project. I can't see it working on anyone. Not fans, not critics, not the general public and not even kids! It is that bad - I'm honest. A lot of people were worried about the special effects, but I thought it was fine. It is the least of the problems. When I criticize the movie, I'm criticizing the writing and the editing. There was absolutely no substance and not nearly enough action or exciting scenes. Too much is wasted on Earth on unnecessary characters no one care about. I don't even know why we needed the Senator and Amanda Waller in the story. Nothing made me care enough about the characters because they are not developed well. The love scenes feeled very forced.

So you see? They focused on earthly scenes when it should have been an outer-space movie, but even then, they failed to make an interesting plot. I don't know why they shied on showing more of Oa and the Corps members. I'm not joking when I say they revealed almost everything there is to show prior to the movie's release. That Corps members gathering scene they show in all the trailers? That's all you gonna see - good luck spotting them all! None of them said even a word. No dialogue whatsoever, no interaction, no bonding.. nothing! I don't even know why they had to use characters from the comics. The only ones that Hal interacts with are Sinestro, Tomar-Re and Kilowog, and it's not really much. Kilowog is only in two scenes and he says few words, that's it. I expected at least one scene with Boodikka, but she was nowhere to be found! I know it's supposed to be an origin story, but they could at least start developing the relationship between the characters for possible sequels. It's like they were throwing us - the fans - some bones to shut us up and then went back to tell the boringly stupid story. Don't think for a second that this was Secret Origins. We would have been lucky if it was. They spend a big deal explaining the concept to the viewers, but never let themselves make any use of it all. Did they fear it would be too much for the viewers? Why? You already explained that this is an intergalactic force that protects the universe, the viewers get it by now, so why not show them any of THAT? the Oa scenes were definitely the best - if only there was enough of it! I really enjoyed the training scenes but there wasn't enough.

Sorry about all that, just needed to get it out of my chest. All that waiting was for nothing. I wish they hadn't announced this project. Believe it, guys, it is as bad as it could get. I just wish they don't give up making DC movies. Frankly, they can easily fix everything in a sequel, but they HAVE to bring better writers.

^I read the one line about it being too focused on Earth and learned all I needed to know, **** I'm depressed.

I'm guiltily pleased that Mr.Poppin's Penguin is starting to slip down from the early 70% it had, somehow that was depressing me more.

Geez bro I feel for you still. It must really suck to see your fav character finally after decades get some major mainstream recognition only to turn out be a steaming pile. GL fans deserve better than this movie.

It's why films such as Thor and Green Lantern were never made in the first place, cause they can come off as hokey (CGI was a factor too). You're never going to get a superhero film that is 100% serious when in space. That's why Nova will never get a film, cause it's hard to take it seriously. Even Star Wars was hokey at times, legendary, but it had light hokey moments. That said, the film wasn't garbage like the critics say. A lot of those morons get paid to say things in favor of studios and companies, etc...They are also critiquing it as if it was going to be Oscar worthy or something. They don't get it. We go to films to get away and have fun, this film accomplishes that.

This is exactly how I feel. It's not meant to be what TDK and Watchmen were with that ultra serious vibe. I would put this right up there with the sort of fun and action that you see in the first Iron Man. I am so puzzled over all these bad reviews because the film isn't bad at all. It was highly enjoyable for me.

I've been a GL fan since Rebirth as well and I don't feel disappointed in the least. GL fans got a movie that is true to the character in my eyes. I went in with extremely high expectations and came out satisfied.

Silver Surfer... More cosmic potential squandered with sub-par material. :csad:

it blows my mind that the first trailer was actually the best representation of the movie

what a f***ing shame

I've been trying to fool myself into being hyped for this movie, but ever since that first trailer I've been doubtful deep down inside

This will actually be quite interesting! I've just checked and it still stands as you've already posted. I'm going to say it'll reach 30 first.

I'm sorry, crap movies are no fun to me. No matter how amazing their visuals are.

It's nothing to do with being "hokey". That isn't why Green Lantern is getting criticised. It's getting criticised because it's poorly written, with flat characters and a cliche plot. Lame villains and dodgy SFX.

^I read the one line about it being too focused on Earth and learned all I needed to know, **** I'm depressed.

It actually balances the Earth to Space ratio quite well. There are more scenes of Oa here than there were of Asgaard in Thor. I enjoyed GL more than Thor but they are very similar in giving us a fun story but leaving you wanting more.

Those Star Wars comparisons are really gonna come back to bite this movie in the arse.

Here's David Poland's interesting review of the film. Note the first couple of paragraphs where he goes after critics.

http://moviecitynews.com/2011/06/review-green-lantern-spoiler-free/#comments

"When I see reviews and read that people thought it was too busy or that they couldn’t understand it or that it was a mess, I throw up my hands. Bull. If you are a professional critic and you can’t keep up with Green Lantern, you aren’t trying. You probably went in with your mind made up."

Basically if you are going in expecting the most Oscar worthy moments of your life ,or even if you are a diehard fan who is gonna be nit picky or say "that would never happen!", then you will be disappointed.

If you're going in expecting to be entertained and see aliens beat on each other with cool CGI and easy jokes that still make you smile and laugh, then you will be satisfied.

You won't piss your cash away as you did with Daredevil, Ghost Rider, ANY X-Men/Wolverine films, Fantastic Four 1 & 2, Ang Lee's Hulk, Blade 3, or Spiderman 3...cause IMHO those are all worse.

Oh great the "oscar worthy" defense.

Just because a film is "hokey" does not mean it's bad, you can have levels of cheesiness, good films do not need to be serious and dark. The problem with this film, it's badly written, the characters are underwritten, the acting is subpar, the film plays it way too safe, it's just not a fun film. The CGI, action and cheesiness can all be there, but without any of the above, none of that matters.

Stop trying to defend a film because it's not "oscar worthy", it dosent hafto be, it just needs to be less F****** stupid!

Well I guess it must be pretty accurate to the comics. Most reviews are saying that Hal Jordan the character is cliche and one dimensional. The dialogue is corny and exposition heavy.

Sounds pretty much spot on for a Geoff Johns Green Lantern comic.

I ask, how can you enjoy a movie where the characters are flat and uninteresting? I honestly do not understand people who are like "So the film isn't great, but it's a fun action movie!". How can the action be good if the plot and the characters involved are poorly written? Why should I, or anyone else, give a **** about spectacular visuals if they have nothing to back them up?

That's the kinda mentality of a child looking at a bright light.

This will actually be quite interesting! I've just checked and it still stands as you've already posted. I'm going to say it'll reach 30 first.

I'll go for 10 fresh, I just feel a mini wave of goodness coming before this movie takes a dip under 20%!

It actually balances the Earth to Space ratio quite well. There are more scenes of Oa here than there were of Asgaard in Thor. I enjoyed GL more than Thor but they are very similar in giving us a fun story but leaving you wanting more.

If it is just as good as Thor all the way around then I will be more than happy.

I'd been depressed since I read the negative reviews. I thought it would get a little better after I watch it, but it only got worse. That's how much I love Green Lantern. And you know? If they managed to make the Earth scenes any interesting, I would have forgiven everything else, but it's really bad. I can't believe WB produced this. They spent that much, couldn't they hire better writers??

:csad: It is so embarrassing! They have to answer for this. They have to rectify it somehow. They have to apologize to all the fans and take a step to produce a redeeming sequel!
