Metropolis Man,

Just read your review of Lantern. It just confirms what I think, I think about this film in response to other films of this genre this summer...

One reviewer said that one thing Green Lantern had going for it that Jonah Hex didn't was the lack of a dead weight like Megan Fox, so I guess Blake Lively isn't as bad.

That movie did 13% and I never have or will see it, saw Ghost Rider in theatres opening night and it was one of the most awful and disappointing movies I'd ever seen and refuse to ever watch again and it got 27%... If GL can't even surpass that... Wow... But I'd think that we have at least a 100 more reviews to come.

Totally agree. People sitting by me in the theater who were unfamiliar with teh comics didn't like it because they thought it required too much of a stretch of the imagination, but honestly, if you watched the trailers or knew anything about green lantern at all, what else did you expect?
Ah, the lame old "they just didn't get it!" excuse.

There is no critic conspiracy to blackball DC movies.
Critics for the most part aren't ******s who know nothing about movies like some make them out to be.

Don't bet on that. And even if that was true, GL doesn't have anything else going for it. It's cheesier. We just said that Thor was charming. It has nice performances. Sadly, I can't say the same about GL.

The action was very worth its time. There's nothing chessy in GL that couldn't be said the same for Thor. GL and Thor are on the same level and I've heard this from several other people, that Green Lantern pulled it off much better. Hopefully general audiences don't listen to this crap being thrown online. If people go see it, I have no doubts they will enjoy it and have fun.

I can't buy for a second that GL is as good as Thor, not yet anyways with the sorts of reviews it is getting.

What is that sort of comment suggesting, why would critics give Thor the pass and not GL, because Thor came first?

One thing Marvel Studios does excellently is cast its Universe, and this makes a huge difference in the delivery of goofy dialogue and scenes.

This aspect seems to be lacking in GL and can make all the difference in the world.

Found this at CBR:

What critics are saying:

Superhero Hype: "Green Lantern fails on so many levels, both as a movie and as a comics adaptation; one of the bigger disappointments of the summer."

IGN: "The film is bad enough to possibly kill any hope for ever seeing The Flash or Justice League."

Bleeding Cool: "Green Lantern is a kids move; but it's a kids movie any fanboys can enjoy".

Crave Online: "This is not the start of a great new blockbuster franchise. It may have already put an end to it."

Entertainment Weekly: "The whole movie is eye candy, and not much more."

US Weekly: "Green Lantern fails to shine."

MSNBC: "A pretty joyless comic book movie experience."

New York Observer: "A dumb, pointless, ugly, moronic and incomprehensible jumble of botched effects, technical blunders, and cluttered chaos."

Hollywood Reporter: "Serves up all the requisite elements with to suggest it doesn't take itself too seriously."

UGO: "An accurate representation of the comic book artform: brisk, enjoyable, and ephemeral."

Joblo: "It's not the end all be all of superhero films, however it will bode well with audiences tired of the brooding caped crusader".

Associated Press: "A joyless amalgamation of expository dialogue and special effects that aren't especially special."

Hitfix: "Plenty of mistakes were made in bringing Green Lantern to the big screen; I have a feeling this is our one and only trip to Oa."

Hollywood.com: "For an actor praised for his down-to-earth demeanor, larger-than-life may simply lie outside of Ryan Reynolds' range."

Variety: "A highly unstable alloy of the serious, the goofy and the downright derivative."

SSG Syndicate: "As a superhero origin story, it's a major disappointment."

Sky Movies: "Led by the ever-watchable Ryan Reynolds, Hal is a pale imitation of Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark."

Metromix: "The amount of money thrown at the screen isn't nearly as important as the quality of the story being told."

Metropolis Man,

That people have it in for this film. David Poland's review kind of confirmed the same things you're going on about.

There's no conspiracy here. People don't "have it out" for this movie. Sometimes movies are just bad.

I will admit that I was concerned yesterday before seeing the movie. With all the bad reviews I thought I'd be walking into a garbage fest. Luckily it was better than I even expected to begin with and I am still scratchy my head over what people disliked so much.

Bubonic,

I liked Thor well enough to see it three times in the theatre but that doesn't blind me to the fact that it's not a particularly good film. It's better than Iron Man 2 and the Incredible Hulk but that's not really saying much.

Thor is a film that's just "good enough". It's meant to introduce the character for Avengers, not to actually tell a real Thor story...and you can feel that with every decision that's made in the film.

But again, that cast carries it to the point where you can look past it's faults.

It seems that Lantern is the exact same thing, except that it doesn't cheap on the action and it doesn't look, in fact, cheap. Say what you will about Thor but Marvel Studios' cut corners with film, in the money department...and you can feel it. It's not a particularly good looking film at all.

Devin Faraci said an interesting thing on twitter yesterday. He believes that Thor and Lantern are essentially the same, lazy film. But, he said that the visual effects and the love story of Lantern are far superior to Thor's.

Those two aspects are a big thing for me because the love story of Thor only works because of Portman and Hemsworth's chemistry. That's it. It's not particularly written well at all but both of the actors play it as a "first date/flirtation" love story...which I bought but there should've been more of it.

If Lantern has better visual effects and a better love story, then it's already better than Thor, in my opinion.

And yet, it's getting killed....

Boxoffice.com has lowered it`s weekend prediction for GL to 50 mil. If this movie reaches 300mil WW I will be surprised.

I respect that much, just can't understand the preferential treatment if this is the case.

I also think the actual concept is what's throwing people as well...

Yeah its hard to say. I mean I don't know for fact that these people wanted to hate it before seeing it but it honestly feels that way to me. As for you most recent post, I really believe you will enjoy it more than Thor. It is a lot of the same in both but GL has much better action, visuals and interesting characters. Good, witty humor too. I want to know what you think when you finally see it.

For those who've seen it, is this one of those times where a lot of trailer moments are missing from the final cut?

Here is a good review.

MODERN MYTH MEDIA: GREEN LANTERN REVIEW

Well they seemed to enjoy it enough for it to be worth while.

Seems to be an odd film to gauge without having seen it myself.
I am expecting a some what "as expected" superhero origin film, with a significant amount of exposition due to the required Corps and ring information, so I wonder with that in mind if I will enjoy what else there is. Seems most people are getting tripped up with these two elements. The Been there done that of the origin, and the "its all too much" of the sci-fi complexity.

Oh well, wait and see. I just hope it does well enough for a sequel. I want Sinestro going off.

Tomorrow. In 3D.

Honestly, I've been every excited to see all the comic book films this year, except for Captain America.

For Thor, I wanted a 21st Century version of Masters of the Universe. I got that.
For X-Men First Class, I wanted a return to the Singer films. I mostly got that.

For Lantern, I want a nice introduction to the mythology and universe of the Lantern Corps and Hal Jordan. A film that will lay the foundation for bigger things. The two DC animated films are my introduction of the Lantern mythology. I want to see that on film.

Because, I think with this film like with the first Transformers film, I get the sense that they shot around a lot of cosmic things because the concept of this story, this universe is just too expensive to do it full bore. A lot of the criticisms stem from the fact that it's too Earthbound but that doesn't surprise me one bit that they went that route.

More so than Thor, I think a full bore Green Lantern film from the outset would've been a mistake and too expensive.

on megan fox's defense she was only in the movie for about 3min... and she barely did anything... she wasnt even a problem in comparison to the epic fail the rest of the movie was. So dont be hatin on megan fox... lol

Brand X,

That review you posted was quite good. Interesting stuff.

Honestly, I can't make my mind up. All I know is this; I have loved Campbell's Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and Mask of Zorro. I thought his Edge of Darkness was a solid, character driven thriller.

I just think it's almost impossible for him to make a film that's as bad as the 19% that it's getting at rottentomatoes.com.

I just can't see it.

This is my personal opinion and bias.

It is so embarrassing! They have to answer for this. They have to rectify it somehow. They have to apologize to all the fans and take a step to produce a redeeming sequel!

You know what? You're absolutely right. DC fans voices need to be heard.
