Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 57

It's a little funny that after the debacle with Ray Fisher on Justice League, WB is looking to go with a black Supes. I think J'onn J'onzz should have a decent sized role in the new Superman movie
I'd be very surprised if all 3 of the recent announcements or rumors (Hispanic Supergirl, Coates writing Superman who possibly will be black, and Jaimie Reyes Blue Beetle movie) aren't PR stunts to combat that

People are divisive over Black Superman and I'm just sitting here thinking of the fun casting possibilities.

Picture it, Metropolis 202whatever, and you got Denzel Washington playing Lex Luthor, Giancarlo Esposito playing Brainiac, Kevin Hart (if he's still relevant) being annoying as Mr. Mxyzptlk and Jharrel Jerome as Superboy with Issa Rae rounding out the cast as Lois Lane.

I'm still unsure about Supes, but either Yahya Abdul or MBJ could work.

The fanboys would lose their minds and think Metropolis is Harlem.

I'm sure most fan boys will be fine...

And I hope the casting wouldn't be that basic

At first I was excited, but then I remembered that this is WB. I won't be surprised if once again, they try to go for some radical or deconstructionist take on Superman.

I don't mind a black Superman as long as he's Clark Kent.

A Black Superman (Clark or Calvin) mostly makes me wonder about the Flash film and how WB plans to handle the Multiverse (officially).

I never really care about changing a character's race, these heroes are decades old and a bunch of whiteboys so it makes sense to update things at this point.

... but this move on DC's part gives me Ghostbusters 2016 vibes. I don't have faith that this isn't some incredibly out of touch exec's attempts to be ground-breaking and bold. I can't speak for anyone else, but what I need to hear from them is that there is vision and determination to get this character right. A deliberately discordant casting approach being the only pitch so far is not really a great first impression.

I am no fan of Cavill's Superman. It's mostly the films' fault but I'm not crushed to see him take off the cape. That said, I think WB could have easily signed a good director and made it work with Cavill; and there's a fanbase behind him that would have been overjoyed.

I do like how this week has gone from one horrible Superman-led series to potentially two good ones :hehe:
This may actually be my best week ever as a Supes fan, lol. Got my Morrison Omnibus, my favorite live-action Superman in a new show, announcement of the HD remaster of STAS, and now we’re finally, officially moving on from the Snyderverse. Supes will soar again. Hallelujah. :woo:

We've had polar opposite weeks :funny:

Sorry to hear that, friend. I’ve been on your end before, too.

Of the list you mention, I've yet to see the new TV episodes but caught the opening montage on YT and loved that so that will be, I expect a thumbs up from me. Morrison, can't stand him so that's that one and I love Snyderverse and will be truly broken if HC is gone. STAS, that's a bonus, I can go with.

I'm just at the point that DC and WB has screwed up Superman on film so many times and shown so little understanding of the character, that I just naturally assume they are going to screw him up again until they prove to me otherwise.

Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. Same ****, different day. :hehe:

We live in a world where we’re getting two cinematic Batman at the same time and if they can have their cake and eat it too with Batman then they can easily do that with Superman. Have the new solo Superman movies star whatever this new actor they cast, and have Cavil be part of the DCEU team-up movies like Justice League. I have a feeling Cavil ain’t done with the cape just yet. Though I’m afraid his days of leading his own solo franchise are behind him.

Really? I have a hard time imagining thinking anything other than All-Star Superman is the highpoint of the character’s literary life in general. But I’d also argue Morrison is the best superhero writer there’s ever been, so, there’s that.

Cavill is gonna go down as a pretty forgettable Superman, I feel. He’s like the Val Kilmer of Supermen. He gave the same performance any other moderately charming matinee idol type would give. I do feel he would’ve faired better under a different director, Snyder normally gets good performances but he never utilized Cavill’s strengths, but he’s just... fine? He’s a pretty generic Superman.

If FC is happy, you know it's good Superman news. :yay:

Can't stand All Star Superman, for me, the most overrated Superman story that ever was.

I actually kinda disagree. Not that he isn't mediocre, but I feel like he'll be more popular than Kilmer ever was because of the hubbub and controversy that's surrounded his Superman since MOS. People feel too passionate about Snyder - and Cavill by extension - for him to go down as the Superman we don't really talk about. That'll probably continue to be Welling. :o

Cavill will be the Roger Moore of Supermen, imo. He'll have his fans, he got more time in the role than his Lazenby (Routh), so his name will forever be associated with the role, but his movies generally aren't well-regarded, and he's not the popular favorite.

A Black Superman ay, hmm I bet they’ll cast the main dude from Bridgerton. He’s such a hit with the gals and guys that I can see the big studios wanting to get him bulked up and in a superhero film soon.
