He-man Sequel Series (Netflix)

I grew up watching the 80s show, so that doesn't apply to me really. I was prob mostly a Transformers kid as far as 80s cartoons go, but I watched a fair amount of the big 4 of He-Man, GI Joe, Thundercats, and Transformers. Before moving on to Batman and X-Men and Power Rangers later on.

But yeah, as someone who did watch the show, I enjoyed it. But I can see TLJ comparisons. For the record, I also liked TLJ and I don't shy away from that opinion

Well , it's not going to apply to everyone to be sure, and there's always acceptations.

But generally speaking, the divide is between alot of the OJ Generation X fans and alot of people coming to this for the first time.

But again, that happens with in fandom every new iteration of a given property. It's not right or wrong, it just is.

Fans coming to a property ,with fresh eyes, will not have the same aversions to change or different interpretations then those who were attached to a previous iteration.

That's been the case with different versions of Batman, Superman, Spiderman , and certainly with Star Trek and Star Wars etc, with regards to fandom.

So the He-Man divide isn't that unusual to me , putting aside the alt right and political discourse around it.

I don't have the same attachment to He-Man that alot of people of my generation who grew up with it when it was new, have.

So I don't have an emotional connection with the MOTU .

So, for me , it really does depend on what the pilot delivers, and for me , it didn't really capture my interest that much.

At the very least, it didn't deliver enough for me to want finish part one. But that's me.

So I don't have the fan investment of being one side, or the other ,on the debate over the series.
I can only go by my own reaction to the show.

And my reaction was ,Meh.

I’ll go with the TLJ comparison because I loved TLJ too, lol.

I'm still at a C or so with TLJ, which is about where the He-Man pilot lands for me.
However, I found TLJ more entertaining than the He-Man pilot .
Then again, I have more of a connection to SW than MOTU anyway.

I think you can be a fan of MOTU and simultaneously not a huge fan of the cartoon. For me, I don't remember watching the cartoon that much. I do remember the toys, though. The toys were the big draw for me, and I remember loving going through garage sales looking for more He-man toys, as they were out of stores by then. I do remember a few new toys that we had.

I love TLJ, but I do see legitimate criticisms of it.

Of course. Everyone has different tastes and I can understand what people are saying when they voice criticism of say TLJ or this new He-Man show. I can easily understand where a long time fan would be frustrated. But I can only view art from my own lense, and in this case I have read many reviews and read the criticism here, and I just cannot get behind the criticism here. I feel like getting hung up on 1 or 2 things ignores the good elsewhere that this show has, and it has a ton of good. But sure, everyone's mileage will vary

That’s where I’m coming from. I was born in the 80’s, so I was very young for MOTU but have vague recollections of enjoying the cartoon, and vividly remember owning and LOVING the toys.

And for the record, I also grew up a massive Star Wars fan since I first saw the OT on VHS when I was like 5 - I had the toys, trading cards, video games etc, and saw all the theatrical re-releases on opening day, so I’m not really on board with the notion that the people who are enjoying stuff like this and TLJ are the people who didn’t grow up with it. That doesn’t line up with my own experience OR what I’ve seen anecdotally.

Only through watching this series did I realize I had a toy of Cringer growing up. I won it from my cousin in a game of marbles. I just thought it was a cool cat toy. So it's easy to see where the appeal for the toys comes from. It casts a wide net.

The thing was about MOTU in the 80s, was that it was everywhere basically and it was a part of pop culture in the 80s.

You didn't have to be a fan of the cartoon to know about it . The toys came before the cartoon did , and they were popular on their own.

It didn't matter whether someone was a fan of the cartoon or not. If you were old enough and aware enough in the 80s, you heard or saw He-Man at least once. It was just that prevalent in the culture back then.

Well, I may be older than you, I was born in 1979, and it's people my age and a bit older that tend to have an issue with the new He-Man.

I suppose it may depend on when you were born in the 80s, but I was like 4 or 5 when the show first premiered and I was 8 when the film came out.

But , from what i've seen it's people my age, as with SW, who've had an issue with the new He-Man.
Now , we all have our own experiences, but from what I've seen the divide generally seems generational.

I think it is a bit of a stretch to make that one line his entire motivation.
How? It is literally the answer Skeletor gives when asked directly why he is the way he is and why he does what he does.

Just looked at the like to dislike ratio on the new Fatman Beyond podcast episode talking about this show on YouTube.

Yikes.

I get being disappointed, having certain issues with the writing, the misleading marketing or not having your expectations met, but...good lord. By their reactions, you’d think Kevin Smith personally invaded their home, assaulted them and murdered their dog and entire family.

Some days, honestly, I’m glad the internet exists. Other days, I think it was a mistake, and should be burned to the ground, nay, nuked from orbit. These people don’t deserve it.

Having lived in a time before the internet, trust me, it's better to have it then not.:funny:

That said, it would be nice to have to have the power to take it away from the most toxic and creepy.

He says, “Look at my face, child!

*mocking tone* It has furnished for me a lonely life in which none would have me as a man.

So…then let me be a god!”

I feel like you’re misreading and focusing on the wrong part of the quote. To me, the way Hamill delivers the line suggests he’s mocking Andra because she, this person he doesn’t even know, had the nerve to ask him why like a naive child. So sarcastically tells her the equivalent of, “somebody hurt my feelings.” If he had a face he probably would have been doing puppy eyes and pouting lips as he said it.

He then brings it back around to what he actually wants. Power, to be a god. Because why wouldn’t he? He’s a greedy a**hole.

The tricky thing about being a fan, is that doesn't necessarily create a single voice for creators. I mean, it is clear there is love for the old series.

The clip they released feels like a modern take on the old series, down to the cheesy lines. The problem comes in that you are asking Kevin Smith to tell a story. And he is still Kevin Smith. He is going to tell the story that Kevin Smith wants to tell. There is definitely signs that he is a fan, and there is stuff he wants to play around with.

That just doesn't include He-man.

Maybe hold off until you've seen the second half before throwing comments like that.

I find it a bit funny that when people complain about this show, you often get a response with "the original was a glorified toy commercial!".. yes, so? Its not like that has changed a lot. I saw that they released a action-figure line based on this show just recently. It is still a toy commercial show. But it had unlikeable characters, the storytelling was weak, and it pretty much only had decent animation going for it. Its not hard to make female characters interesting and cool without making them unlikeable. Also, you dont have to make the men complete wimps who keep saying how sorry they are to exist, just because you want to focus on female characters. There are tons of comics, animated series, etc that have managed to do that a lot better than what they did with this series.

The "kevin smith as a saviour" thing I have a bit hard to understand. Guy hasn't really written anything decent in years. Cant remember the last time I thought something he wrote/directed was smart. Possibly like his Green Arrow run and that must be 20 years ago.

I read your post really carefully, and no, My take is valid and something that is shared by quite a few it seems.

I had my say? :D

In the 3 episodes i watched, it reduced the male characters to weak side characters and whacked a main character twice. Also Man of Arms story was hilarious. While doing that they managed to make all the female characters annoying. To be fair, both all the men and all the women were equally annoying, just for different reasons.

Also "Krypton INC" , "You had your say" and "right wing paranoid delusions", is this generally how you speak to people you dont know or dont agree with?
A bunch of sexist jerks on the internet who like to pee in holes in their basement agree with you. May this reality fill your heart with joy and laughter.

It is amazing how much it reveals about someone, when they complain about "annoying female" characters or men not acting totally "Chad".

I definitely think a lot of these platforms should allow the ability for punishments and temporary/permanent restrictions on people who constantly abuse it. If that were to happen, though, a certain section of the internet would scream, “mYfReEsPeEcHREEEEEEEEEEE!!!1!!!111!”, then they would protest and probably cancel their accounts, and these platforms would lose revenue. Which is probably why they don’t do it. They’d sooner appease everyone than lose part of their bottom line.

I knew there would be backlash, but not nearly to this extent.

At the end of the day, it’s just a show, and there are many other iterations of the character to enjoy. I mean, Netflix also has that CGI animated show coming out as well! Maybe people who didn’t enjoy this will enjoy that.

You can look up 3 hour compilations of the original series on the official He-Man and She-Ra YouTube. I believe it’s also on STARZ at the moment.
