Thor: Box Office and Predictions

I'll be extremely surprised if this manages to equal MoM's performance tbh, and even Ragnarok's numbers will be a tall order without Russia or China. I think its probably a consequence of the delayed marketing campaign and general MCU fatigue.

If it ends up with a higher score on RT then that might help, but ultimately I think this film just can't replicate MoM's hype due to the lack of multiversal cameos (and the most highly anticipated cameos have been confirmed to be cut from the film).

The trailers have been kind of weak imo.

I agree. And the fact that they left them so late can't have helped either. Like, obviously its not a good idea to release a trailer too early, but a marketing window of less than 3 months isn't enough for most movies IMO.

Thursday previews around the mid 20's is pretty great for the MCU.
And an opening weekend of around 150M for example would place it on the MCU top 10 which is very good.

We shall see. I think it will do very well regardless.

MOM definitely benefited from the cameo-bait. X-men, F4, Inhumans, "What If"... stuff that amounted to nothing basically. Not to mention the many rumored other stuff that didn't happen att all and was discussed ad nauseam, Deadpool, Balder the Brave, Superior Iron Man... Regarding the TLT cameos, most people had no clue about those cameos either. There where rumblings which the hardcore fans knew but otherwise i don't think that's a big factor for the general audience.

Not to mention this:

Lmao they dropped those trailers like "Ahhh f***, I almost forgot we got another movie coming out".

My take is that it opens lower and has slightly better legs than MoM (although the latter has shown good "late" legs). I don't think it quite hits the DOM total of MoM, but it's really going to depend on how well it's received. Hard to say until after it opens.

What is this ?

One of the big theories before MoM came out was that there was going to be an alternate universe version of Tony Stark in the Illuminati and that he would be played by Tom Cruise (a reference to the fact that Cruise was in the running to play Iron Man way back in the day before RDJ was cast).

There were a lot of online scoopers claiming that it was confirmed too, so it was pretty disappointing for a lot of people when he didn't show up and all we got was the dumbest man alive instead:

MCU Box Office - Thursday Previews / Opening Weekends

1. Avengers: EG ---------- 60M / OW = 357M
2. Spider-Man: NWH ----- 50M / OW = 260M
3. Avengers: IW ------------ 39M / OW = 257M
4. Doctor Strange: MOM - 36M / OW = 187M
5. Avengers: AOU ---------- 27M / OW = 191M
6. Black Panther ------------- 25M / OW = 202M
7. Captain America: CW --- 25M / OW = 179M
8. Captain Marvel ------------ 20M / OW = 153M
...
Thor Ragnarok - 14.5M / OW = 122M

Seems like TLT's previews are gonna be in the 20's. :yay:
Update. It might be heading into mid to high 20’s, possibly targeting a Top 5 MCU spot.

I'm with you and wishing Marvel would dial back the content but they won't and I understand why.

**** no! I want more, I want it all and I want it now! I've been waiting since 80's for these and all you spoiled brats who are getting all this without a 30 year wait, can just go live somewhere with no internet for the rest of your lives! :argh:

Certainly seems like $140-160M would be decent considering the reviews. That type of performance would still put it above any other box office opening in the Thor franchise.

I've always been more of a quality over quantity type of person, it has nothing to do with being spoiled.

Why not both? I've liked all MCU stuff so far. Far From Home has been the weakest for me due to trailers spoiling and telegraphing the movie too much and the humor now working so well.

Because you can't have both without one of them suffering eventually.

You can have both quality and quantity but the thing is that not everyone thinks that what is being given is quality.

Of course you want both, but if some and I can only choose one...then I'm going with quality 10/10 times. I'll take 3 great Planet of the Apes movies over 8 mediocre DC movies. And I love DC way more than I love the PotA franchise
