The General Comic Discussion Thread - Part 2

@Mani-Man i noticed the Flash Annual wasn’t on your list. I highly recommend it. Sure, DC may have just pulled a Hal Jordan style retcon on the events in Heroes in Crisis, but the execution was very well done and has set Wally and even Oliver up well going forward.

Just went ahead and ordered the Blackest Night Box set.
Sure it's pricey, but each book comes out at pretty much the same price as a regular paperback.

Cliff Chiang doing a 4-issue Catwoman miniseries. :hmr:

Cliff Chiang Returns to DC With Catwoman: Lonely City!
Ten years ago, the massacre known as Fools’ Night claimed the lives of Batman, The Joker, Nightwing, and Commissioner Gordon…and sent Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, to prison. A decade later, Gotham has grown up—it’s put away costumed heroism and villainy as childish things. The new Gotham is cleaner, safer…and a lot less free, under the watchful eye of Mayor Harvey Dent and his Batcops. It’s into this new city that Selina Kyle returns, a changed woman…with her mind on that one last big score: the secrets hidden inside the Batcave! She doesn’t need the money—she just needs to know…who is “Orpheus?”

Chiang writes, draws, colors, and letters each of the four 48-page, Prestige Plus format issues that make up this DC Black Label series; Catwoman: Lonely City is poised to be the kind of next-level storytelling that will change the way that fans see Gotham City, its heroes, and its villains forever.

Echoing Babillygunn here. The Flash Annual was wonderful. Despite kinda liking Heroes in Crisis, i hope DC can finally push Wally forward and away from that book and restore him to his former glory without harping on HiC anymore.

Finally got up to Forbidden Planet in London at the weekend (first time since the pandemic hit), and came back with some cool stuff. Just started Crisis on Multiple Earths: Crossing Over, a new edition containing the first two CoME volumes published in the early 2000's collecting the earliest JLA/JSA crossovers. I love these stories. Gardner Fox was an incredibly creative writer, really running with the concept he'd begun in Flash of Two Worlds. Who'd have thought that one idea would have such a massive impact/influence on the future of DC comics. Amazing.

Are those printed in the states too? Those are stories I want as well but don't need in HC.

I agree. HiC was a tough one for me. I liked the story and the concept, but didn’t like Wally being treated as he was. Interestingly, I heard an interview with Tom King this summer where he stated that HiC was one of his favorite things that he has ever written, but he agreed with the flack it takes because, as he sees it, in hindsight it would’ve worked with just about anyone else but Wally. He was the wrong character to do that to in that story.

Absolutely. It's a US publication (soft cover).
Time to find the time and strength to get to a comic shop. I haven't been to Forbidden Planet NYC in a good long time.

I hadn't been able to go since Feb last year, but as I walked in it was like I'd never been away. I went up there with my kids, and as we got to the comics/trades I just said quietly 'Daddy's home' :yay:

This type of stories come out every few years sadly. There will be one or two stories were somebody att Warners or DC has actually been decent and credited somebody and given them a check, and then this will pop up again.

Its sad, but nothing new.

Batman Haunted Knight. This is a collection of 3 really good stories if you ask me. The first story, which features Scarecrow, seems like it might have been a big inspiration for Batman Begins.
Only major gripe I have is the fact that Batman let Mad Hatter get the upper hand on him way to easily in the second story, I did not buy that at all. Apart from that though, a great read.

I grew to appreciate more what they did after watching this two part documentary.

Still diving through this week's books, but I'll share two thoughts about Jeremy Adams' current issue of The Flash, #772.

1. I didn't realize how much I missed the OG Flash costume until I saw it in this issue. It ranks as one of THE perfect costume designs in comics. Seeing it free of all that needless yellow piping and the chin strap was so refreshing, and a welcome reminder that you shouldn't mess with the classic costumes.

2. It's so nice to read a Flash book that isn't dripping with forced tragedy. It was pretty unendurable when Johns killed off Barry's mother and tainted the Flash world, and it's been a little rough with Wally and Heroes in Crisis. But here we are: fun, witty, action-packed superhero comics bereft of trauma.

Well I think it will eventually collect the entire Milestone run.

Yes!!!
The Flash title was THE disappointment of Rebirth. But it (and Nightwing) is the highlight of Infinite Frontier.

Milestone Compendium collects Blood Syndicate #1-12; Hardware #1-12; Icon #1-10; Static #1-8; Xombi#0-11; Shadow Cabinet #0

I'm surprised they are going heavy on Blood Syndicate and Hardware first over Icon and Static. Guess they want to save more of book 2 for the Worlds Collide crossover.

But all that Xombi makes me smile. I've wanted a collection of that for a long time. Milestone's return was hoping for proper reprints.

Too bad they didn't do the showcases anymore, I'd love to see some of these series in B&W.

I got to admit the more I am reading about what the updated timeline for the DCU could've been and how 5G was supposed to be the more I am a little disappointed that this didn't happen and a little ashamed I wasn't as open as before. Seems like it could've been very good. Guess I was still bitter about what they did to 52 just as it was starting to find it's footing better.

Go figure the one time DC tries to get its act togther since COIE and it falls apart.

I really hate how lazy they are now with the "everything is in continuity"

Really liked Superman: Son of Kal-El. A huge part of me wishes this was Conner's story and Conner was the one taking over for Superman, Tim taking over for Batman, & Cassie taking over for Wonder Woman but if they are going to go this route they should've just let the 5g thing happen and then change things down the line or do like how Marvel did with Spider-Girl where they start a second line of books with the younger generation taking over and the main titles the status que.
