Dune

I have not made a decision on whether or not I will want to watch this in theaters or HBO Max. I have been very picky about which movies I watch in theaters, with Green Knight and Shang Chi the only ones I have watched so far.

Just got back from a theater. Well, for now I can tell that it didn't feel like 2,5 hours long movie. It flew by, unlike Arrival and BR49.

Awesome you got to watch it! What would you give it from 1-10?

All the poster is saying is if a director constantly makes good work, a RT rating isn’t going to stop them from seeing their movie and making up their mind themselves.

Some people keep an eye on RT.com for the same reason we watch the box office returns. Its data that informs us of the film's performance and prospects. And because we are invested in the film. We want it to succeed, and favorable reviews is a part of success.

I get that and that’s cool, but I don’t think that negates what I said either.

The reviews on RT help weed out the movies not worth seeing in theaters (at least for the general audience who only see a handful of movies a year). Of course if you’re going to the movies every other week, chances are you’re not going to care about what critics say anyway.

John Campea had a meltdown over DV’s Marvel comments.

Agreed with Campea on that one. It’s one thing to not like Marvel movies but to call the people who watch them as zombies is a bit much. He could have just said “comic book movies are not for me”.

I don’t think he’s completely wrong. It’s the same thing as the Scorsese thing. It’s getting to the point where people don’t want movies, they just want content.

I'd take a Denis Villeneuve film over a Marvel film any day of the week, and he's totally not wrong about them, but he's also been anti-superheroes in general for years now and has always come across as a bit of a pretentious ass on the topic, imo. Which is fine, he's allowed to be that, lol.

I encourage everyone to read his full comment on the subject. I would say it's quite accurate - some directors add 'colour' to Marvel's set format, but at the end of the day, they all have the same mould. They clearly have a house style to their films, and they handle their storytelling like a long-running television series. Similar to most TV shows, there is a distinct structure of emotional beats that are required to take place on an episode to episode basis. Also, directors' stylistic choices are restrained by a show's existing format.

I just find it silly when filmmakers rag on others. Everyone has things they don't like but I think it's pretty bad form to talk bad about others publicly when you're in the business and when the basis is nothing else but your own taste.

Since I think Villeneuve is the best filmmaker in Hollywood right now it's not that I necessarily disagree that other films are worse than his, I just think that art should be more inclusive instead of being about pretentious self-importance, and all Hollywood films are art just as all of them are products to be sold.

Personally I'm just glad I can enjoy both sorts of films and I hope I enjoy Dune as much as I'm expecting to, as I'm seeing it tonight.

Antagonizing audiences is unnecessary. That being said, I don't disagree with DV, I nag about it constantly myself.

Worth watching/10. :)

I cant believe Denis cropped that gorgeous IMAX footage to 2.35.

:fst:

Id pay a pretty penny to get an uncropped IMAX version on HBO Max and UHD.

It's the pretentious part that rubs me the wrong way.
Certainly, it is okay not to like CBM's.
But this idea that it is a lower form of mind numbing entertainment is a bit much.
I wouldn't be surprised if Villeneuve Never Saw a full MCU film.

Personally I just wonder why journalists just to have ask every f**king director what they think about Marvel movies? Especially directors who aren't exactly known for making this kind of movies. It's so pointless. Like asking Metallica what they think of Justin Bieber or something. I'm not surprised some directors perhaps come across as a little full of themselves having to answer these questions (perhaps several times). They're probably annoyed as hell deep inside but tries to be somewhat polite

Yeah I don’t really care if he likes Marvel movies or not. Everyone has different tastes. It’s the calling of the audience as zombies that I thought was bad form. Especially when there’s a lot of crossover in audience that’s interested in both Dune and comic book movies. He just comes off as arrogant and pretentious.

So they can get clickbait headlines.

Sicario wasn’t very deep and so was BR2049 ( though beautifully orchestrated).
He doesn’t need to pretend, like he’s the new Nolan - he ain’t (yet)
