Eternals The Eternals General Disscussion and Speculation thread

Campea saw it again, this time with RMB, who loved it. He's a huge fan of the Eternals comics so high praise. Especially the comment "this movie is what Ridley Scott's Prometheus wishes it was".

It was exactly what he wanted it to be. I guess we can hear more from them in today's show.

I'm getting the impression is that this movie might be right up the alley for the "older critics" who might not be that big of comic book movie fans.

Side note, Campea's out of the theater reaction video has over 142K views and this one is already up to 40K. This might be some of the best word of mouth for some fans.

He is far from 100% a kiss ass on movies. He hated Fast 9 and didn't like how Han came back, and he was preaching "Justice for Han" for years.

RMB is also one of those comic book fans who isn't triggered by race bending or gender bending of characters like other comic book fans are.

Assuming the leaks are true, there’s only one beat I really didnt like, otherwise it was fine, and will hopefully play well when were not gettin the reddit version of the plot

I really like the cinematography and coloring here (CGI monster aside)

yeah its mostly gorgeous, but I do have to be honest, the deviants look like a big ole cgi mess, like multicolored symbiotes or a transformer with the exterior panels removed. I love the Marvel production art team, but this was a rare miss for them imo

What are your doubts?

that some of the characters die before they ever meet an Avenger. They don't have to meet an Avenger in their first movie and in fact the Guardians did not meet any other MCU superheroes until their 3rd MCU appearance, which was Infinity War and they are all still alive (although there's a different version of Gamora). I would rather they all be kept alive before they meet any Avengers.

That's kind of an odd reason to think they are fake.
Not every character introduced in these movies need to cross over with others. Plus out of all of the Eternals, the only one that needs to really crossover is Sersi given that she was Avenger in the comics (granted the movies can do whatever they want really). Also another thing to keep in mind (again, if they go by the comics anyway), the Eternals never really die any. so they could bring back people if they wanted

The universe doesn't revolve around the Avengers you know. It's the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not the Avengers Cinematic Universe.
Yondu died without ever meeting an Avenger. And if we're going forward and expanding this into a vast universe/multiverse with different corners (mutants, supernatural, cosmic, street-level, etc. set in different locations around the world and beyond as well as occassionally different time periods) I'd hate to have all characters constantly being forced into meeting Avengers just to tick a box. (not to mention that if Sersi becomes an Avenger they'll have retroactively met one similar to how the Ancient One and Mar-Vell never met an Avenger before their deaths (and Ying Li will presumably fall into this category as well if Shang-Chi becomes an Avenger))

Still I have my doubts about the leak from Reddit. Reddit had a Shang Chi leak months before it was released and none of it happened from the leaks, including who was in the tournament.

Honestly reading the reactions throughout the day, this seems very mixed. It wouldn't even surprise me if this gets a RT score in the high 60s. Or low 70s. Too many people I like and share the same movie taste with are very meh about this film. It's giving AOU vibes. I loved Shang-Chi. That film had a great balance between action & great character moments. I'm still excited to see the film but ngl like I said, too many people I share taste with are meh on it.
I don't follow the reviews and all that but usually I am very hyped about something in an MCU movie. This one I am still trying to find what is exciting me, the 1st trailer looked very nice, but I just expect most of the characters to die or not be huge part in the MCU.
Usually going in with low expectations is good for me though, so we shall see.

So the actress playing Sprite looked older and taller in the world premiere. I don't know how they are going to eXplain that in the sequel given that Sprite doesn't age. And Eternals 2 wouldn't be out after 2024.

Well if the leaks are to be believed...
She becomes mortal at the end if the movie.

In general I'm all about respecting source material but really? At best, the Eternals were a failed D-list team that Marvel tried to revive every 10--20 years. What does "Eternals in Name Only" mean when they have been pretty much reinvented multiple times? I'm a big Kirby fan and I like the concept of the Eternals but for that property I'm all for someone trying to put their own spin on it.

I'm not a huge fan of the Eternals and I think that the original concept was a good idea, but poorly executed. That being said, this movie isn't even trying to remain faithful to the source material outside of the names of the characters. I would be all for changes made to the characters if those changes made sense, kept the characters MOSTLY faithful to their original comic book versions, and if the movie didn't have a bunch cliche Hollywood tropes. They lost me when they made the Eternals and Deviants aliens instead of evolved/mutated humans. They could have at least made them genetically engineered humans.

Honestly, I have read most of Kirby's original Eternals series. My assessment is changing the characters a bit is a good idea. Too many characters in that comic don't have distinct personalities. Yeah, they have colorful outfits and such, but they are all basically one of the same 4 characters. So I am all for changing things up and making the characters more distinct. Also, as much as I love Kirby's work mostly, some of his solo work while visually gorgeous lacked flair and thus read as fairly boring. It seems like most of the core ideas about the comic are present here, so I think this will retain a lot of the comic's spirit while adding much needed flair and variety.

But I won't know that for sure until I see it.

Can I create a Harry Styles is StarfoX thread? This is literallyall over the internet including Wikipedia.

Any changes that are made to the characters from the movie, guess what? It Will be incorporated in the comics. It will be canon going forward lol

I don’t know why people are taking the leak summary as an indication of quality. When the internet got a leak summary for Endgame, everyone was crying about how terrible it sounded. It’s almost like 3 hours and context and acting and emotions and writing can change perception.

Many die hard comic book fans are enraged by the changes made to the characters. They should be more like Robert Meyer Burnett. He's the biggest Eternals comics fan there is and wasn't upset at the gender and race changes for the movies and he didn't mind it as long as they told a great story, and in his mind, they did.

Looks like I might actually get to see this in theater on Sunday the 7th. Screening time fits better for bus line schedule. Still can't just reserve a ticket but would have to pay for it immediately... :yuk:

From what I have read, the MCU version is not expected to be

a sexual predator

The comic book version of the character isn't one either. In fact, they even did a story that proved he wasn't.
