DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Are there other good candidates? (that geeks would know about)

I read Jeff Robinov as someone's option on Twitter. Not my pick, but it sounds closer to someone they'd actually hire than Bruce Timm or the like.

Here’s my unsolicited take on the Arrowverse, and why I’m not feeling Berlanti as the Feige of DC. This is all my subjective opinion of course, but I don’t think the Arrowverse is very good at all. I don’t think putting Berlanti in charge of DC films and giving him bigger budgets is going to fix the problems his work has.

Arrow - first 2 seasons are good, the rest is mostly unwatchable and super repetitive. So many filler episodes.

The Flash - the first season is the best thing in the whole Arrowverse; it’s awesome! Season 2 is good, the rest is mostly unwatchable. Chris Klein’s Cicada is the cringiest villain performance in any superhero show or movie.

Legends of Tomorrow - unwatchable, but I get why people like it. It doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not.

Batwoman - unwatchable, probably the worst show in the Arrowverse, a disgrace to the Batman IP.

Supergirl - unwatchable, so much potential wasted. Filled with great characters but brought down by a serious lack of quality writing, CGI, and acting.

Black Lightning - unwatchable, I couldn’t get into these characters or the story. Black Lightning needs the rest of the Outsiders, I don’t find him very interesting on his own.

Titans - features some of my favorite characters ever, but suffers from terrible writing. The costumes are excellent and most of the actors are great in their roles. Titans is my favorite show Berlanti has produced, but not because of the show itself- but the characters. My favorite character is Robin, so I feel like i have to somewhat enjoy it. There are moments of genuine greatness that are inevitably followed by crushing disappointments due to terrible writing.

Superman & Lois - first season is great, second season is good but a huge drop in quality. Too many episodes and not much happens. Give us better villains, what the ****?

The original Green Lantern script he helped write is one of the best things he’s done and actually gives me hope that he could do a decent job as DC’s Feige if that does indeed happen. They could do worse I suppose, but I think they can do better. I don’t have any suggestions, but based on Berlanti’s work on DC, I would prefer someone else.
Too bad that you don't like it.
Arrowverse has in some cases, when it comes to the characters, done better than DCU.

Titans isn't a part of Arrowverse though. I agree with you that it was terrible.

As I said in my original post, if Berlanti takes charges of DC Films he will be able to have better writers too. I didn't only say higher budgets

A Feige type won't work if the leadership still micromanage. Hell, I don't even think Feige has that type of freedom. I still think he gets mandates tbh.
Pretty sure they restructured to where Feige only reported to Iger (now Chapek)

Speaking of. Variety actually said this in regards to the new DC chief:

Zaslav remains steadfast in his plan for a single DC vertical led by an executive reporting directly to him
This could be a game changer. It's always been guys like Hamada who answered to like a million people

Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim just signed with CAA for representation. Hmmmmm.

Yeah, it *could* be. Even if Zaslav is a terrible boss, *if* he actually enacted that kind of structural change, it would be good in the long run for DC. However, I doubt it will happen, there are too many feet which it would step on, and frankly, Zaslav sounds like a terrible leader.

I just can't see Zaslav remaining in the role long term. Feels like a case of when he's out rather than if.

I really want to see more Justice League in live action. It’s time, I don’t care if it’s Snyderverse or a whole new cast. Maybe just do a self contained Justice League story on HBO Max? Or just do a Kingdom Come or New Frontier series? Lots of possibilities. But we need to see this team again soon. I don’t need the build up with multiple solo films.

Not agreeing or disagreeing, just making the observation that one of the things Snyder/WB got crucified for from BvS onwards was that they rushed into team-up/JL territory instead of building to it with multiple solo films like Marvel.

i personally don't need to see the build up of many solo films, but i can see why others do.
mcu set a high bar and people have those expectations now.

but before mcu came along, we had some decent xmen films where their first films was teaming up - though focus was on jackman's wolverine.

but now audience is accustomed to needing solo films to come first.

My bank account isn't interested in seeing solo after solo, though I do think some characters would benefit. I think we're shifting from the solo model anyway and once the MCU introduces the X-Men you'll start to see studios trying out smaller team-ups and ensembles.

I don’t think they rushed it at WB, I think they just made the wrong movies. It was really just Snyder’s style that didn’t connect with people. If they connected with audiences, nobody would’ve complained that the movies were rushing to get to JL.

Life is short, tomorrow is not a given to any of us. I want Justice League movies or a live action show. Tell good stories and people will show up.

how about Trinity movie before rushing into JL.

definitely.

matt wagner did a good story about it.
plenty of other source material to draw from too.

We already got a Trinity movie with BVS. I think they should just jump into a Kingdom Come or New Frontier show, unconnected from any cinematic universe. Or just do a Justice League miniseries based on Tower of Babel.

I don’t see audiences getting that hyped for a new DC cinematic universe when we’re still in the middle of the DCEU.

If they want to do a Justice League movie or show maybe it should just be its own continuity. The opportunity to build up to a JL movie came and went.

There won’t be a new JL until Superman gets his due first. Bet on it.

Well yeah. But I don’t think we should have to wait that long. If I were a betting man, I don’t think WB will ever get Superman right. I’d be shocked if they do. I’d rather just jump straight into another JL story instead of waiting around for a new Superman movie which might or might not click with general audiences? A self contained Justice League film was almost reality with Miller’s Justice League: Mortal, I think they should try again, though I don’t think it is very likely.

We'll eventually get a JL movie, but it's gonna be a long while , even with this "reset".

A decade at least I would suspect.

Unless they did do a one shot, no prior continuity, JL film ,with new versions of Batman, Superman, WW etc, in the next few years, I don't see a JL film happening anytime in the next 10 years.

But eventually, they'll try again ,whether its under this managemen,t or the next.
Hopefully, by that point, they'll have all their casting, story, and creative ducks in a role to make "a back- stage drama free" good film.

Such a shame as things were so exciting when they originally announced the 2 JL films. A good Superman film would change things IMO as then suddenly you could hang onto Gadot and Momoa and we'd also likely be approaching the 3rd Reeves Batman film beyond which getting Pattinson might start becoming at least a possibility.

Honestly I don’t think Gadot, Levi, and Momoa are that good as their respective characters. But the thing is the audiences are already used to them in these roles. It would be hard to replace them. I’d rather we just got new versions of these characters in a stand-alone Justice League show. With Ezra, Affleck, Fisher, and Cavill seemingly vacated their roles, maybe it’s time to just wipe the slate clean in a few years time. Let the Black Adam/Shazam series finish up, and do Aquaman 2, and WW3 and call it a day on the DCEU?

I wouldn't mind seeing the old school Timm and Dini JL roster for a rebooted JL film.

Instead of Cyborg and Aquaman, have Stewart's JL and Hawkgirl, and instead of Barry Allen , use Wally West.

Yeah I would love that lineup! It’s probably about time to focus on Wally West after the Ezra debacle.

John Stewart would be the smart choice. Regardless of the movies quality, “Green Lantern: Beware My Power” very smartly introduced John Stewart as a stand in for Kyle Rayner. Stewart lacks big comics stories/lore. The GL lore is centered around Hal and Kyle, I think it’s smart to give Kyle Rayner’s origin to John. I would love to see a GL movie with Sinestro and Hal Jordan/Parallax as the covert big baddie. Would be a good foundation for a GL movie.

We’ve still never seen a Green Lantern with the Justice League, that’s crazy! Wouldn’t mind seeing the League with Rayner, Stewart , or Jordan. I just want to see a live action Justice League with GL. I still think it was a mistake not to use John Stewart GL in JL.
